A signal processing approach is proposed to jointly filter and fuse spatially-indexed measurements captured from many vehicles. It is assumed that these measurements are corrupted by both sensor noise and GPS positioning uncertainties. Measurements from low-cost vehicle-mounted sensors (e.g., accelerometers and GPS receivers) are properly combined to produce higher quality road roughness data for cost-effective road surface condition monitoring. The proposed algorithms are recursively implemented and thus require only moderate computational power and memory space. These algorithms are important for future road management systems, which will use on-road vehicles as a distributed network of sensing probes gathering spatially-indexed measurements for condition monitoring in addition to other applications such as environmental monitoring. Our method and the related signal processing algorithms are tested using field data.

Affect sensing by machines has been argued as an essential part of next-generation human-computer interaction (HCI). To this end, in the recent years a large number of studies have been conducted, which report automatic recognition of emotion as a difficult, but feasible task. However most effort has been put towards offline analysis, whereas to date only few applications exist, which are able to react to a user's emotion in real-time. In response to this deficit we introduce a framework we call Smart sensor Integration (SSI), which considerably jump-starts the development of multimodal online emotion recognition (OER) systems. In particular SSI supports the pattern recognition pipeline by offering tailored tools for data segmentation, feature extraction, and pattern recognition, as well as, tools to apply them offline (training phase) and online (real-time recognition). Furthermore, it has been designed to handle input from various input modalities and to suit the fusion of multimodal information.

The following paper presents the effects of work on evaluating application of structure-from-motion 3D reconstruction algorithms to the purpose of computer-guided surgical training. In the paper a system for laparoscopic surgery training is presented. The key part of the system is a novel approach to training, where a 3D model of the operating fields serves as a base of the interaction between the trainee and the system. Outline of the 3D processing pipeline is presented, results are shown and discussed.

The factory of the future is the wireless factory-fully programmable, nimble and adaptive to planned mode changes and unplanned faults. Today automotive assembly lines loose over $22,000 per minute of downtime. The systems are rigid, difficult to maintain, operate and diagnose. Our goal is to demonstrate the initial architecture and protocols for all-wireless factory control automation. Embedded wireless networks have largely focused on open-loop sensing and monitoring. To address actuation in closed-loop wireless control systems there is a strong need to re-think the communication architectures and protocols for reliability, coordination and control. As the links, nodes and topology of wireless systems are inherently unreliable, such time-critical and safety-critical applications require programming abstractions where the tasks are assigned to the sensors, actuators and controllers as a single component rather than statically mapping a set of tasks to a specific physical node at design time. To this end, we introduce the embedded virtual machine (EVM), a powerful and flexible runtime system where virtual components and their properties are maintained across node boundaries. EVM-based algorithms introduce new capabilities such as provably minimal graceful degradation during sensor/actuator failure, adaptation to mode changes and runtime optimization of resource consumption. Through the design of a micro-factory we aim to demonstrate the capabilities of EVM-based wireless networks.

The present paper describes the construction of a multimodal database, referred to as the PROMETHEUS database, which contains recordings from heterogeneous sensors. The main purpose of this database is the development of a framework for monitoring and interpretation of human behavior in unrestricted environments of both indoor and outdoor type. It contains single-person and multi-person scenarios, but also covers scenarios with interactions between groups of people. It is devoted to detection of typical and atypical events, while care has been to taken for the recordings to be as close to real-world conditions as possible. The uniqueness of the PROMETHEUS database comes not only from the unique sensor sets but is due primarily to its generic design, which allows for embracing a wide range of real-world applications (including smart-home and human-robot interaction interfaces, indoors/outdoors public areas surveillance etc).

Online rebinning is an important and well-established technique for reducing the time required to process PET data. However, the need for efficient data processing in a clinical setting is growing rapidly and is beginning to exceed the capability of traditional online processing methods. High-count rate applications such as rubidium 3-D PET studies can easily saturate current online rebinning technology. Real-time processing at these high count rates is essential to avoid significant data loss. In addition, the emergence of time-of-flight (TOF) scanners is producing very large data sets for processing. TOF applications require efficient online rebinning methods so as to maintain high patient throughput. Currently, several new hardware architectures like Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are available to speed up the data parallel and number crunching algorithms. In comparison to the usual parallel systems, such as multiprocessor or clustered machines, GPU hardware can be much faster and above all, it is significantly cheaper. The GPUs have been primarily delivered for graphics for video games but are now being used for high performance computing across many domains. In this study, we investigate the suitability of the GPU for PET rebinning algorithms and also implement them on the same.

This paper describes an ongoing research program aimed to develop a network of low-cost, low-power consumption CMOS cameras whose main function is to determine, within a typical house or office room, the posture of a human body, i.e. standing, sitting, or laying down. Fast, low-complexity algorithms have been developed which can be implemented on the limited CPU and RAM resources that are available in the microprocessor chip that comes integrated with this type of cameras. When equipped with wireless communication capabilities, e.g. IEEE 802.15.4, the cameras can perform data fusion and collaborative decision functions that can further increase the probability of correct detection and classification. It is envisioned that systems such as the one described in this paper will work in conjunction with a wireless body area network (WBAN) that measures vital signs. The final goal is to have an accurate and cost effective system capable of providing relevant and timely information to the medical personnel that is responsible for the care of the patients.

Embedded wireless networks have largely focused on open loop sensing and monitoring. To address actuation in closed loop wireless control systems there is a strong need to re-think the communication architectures and protocols for reliability, coordination and control. As the links, nodes and topology of wireless systems are inherently unreliable, such time-critical and safety-critical applications require programming abstractions where the tasks are assigned to the sensors, actuators and controllers as a single component rather than statically mapping a set of tasks to a specific physical node at design time. To this end, we introduce the embedded virtual machine (EVM), a powerful and flexible programming abstraction where virtual components and their properties are maintained across node boundaries. In the context of process and discrete control, an EVM is the distributed runtime system that dynamically selects primary-backup sets of controllers to guarantee QoS given spatial and temporal constraints of the underlying wireless network. The EVM architecture defines explicit mechanisms for control, data and fault communication within the virtual component. EVM-based algorithms introduce new capabilities such as predictable outcomes and provably minimal graceful degradation during sensor/actuator failure, adaptation to mode changes and runtime optimization of resource consumption. Through the design of a natural gas process plant hardware-in-loop simulation we aim to demonstrate the preliminary capabilities of EVM-based wireless networks.

sensor networks have been shown to be useful in diverse applications. One of the important applications is the collaborative detection based on multiple sensors to increase the detection performance. To exploit the spectrum vacancies in cognitive radios, we consider the collaborative spectrum sensing by sensor networks in the likelihood ratio test (LRT) frameworks. In the LRT, the sensors make individual decisions. These individual decisions are then transmitted to the fusion center to make the final decision, which provides better detection accuracy than the individual sensor decisions. We provide the lowered-bounded probability of detection (LBPD) criterion as an alternative criterion to the conventional Neyman-Pearson (NP) criterion. In the LBPD criterion, the detector pursues the minimization of the probability of false alarm while maintaining the probability of detection above the pre-defined value. In cognitive radios, the LBPD criterion limits the probabilities of channel conflicts to the primary users. Under the NP and LBPD criteria, we provide explicit algorithms to solve the LRT fusion rules, the probability of false alarm, and the probability of detection for the fusion center. The fusion rules generated by the algorithms are optimal under the specified criteria. In the spectrum sensing, the fading channels influence the detection accuracies. We investigate the single-sensor detection and collaborative detections of multiple sensors under various fading channels, and derive testing statistics of the LRT with known fading statistics.

Detection and tracking of sophisticated targets involving increased resolution and the utility of synthetic aperture transmitter windows require new and innovative approaches to active sensor technologies. The bistatic technique to target tracking is extended to form a multistatic radar system using multiple and separate transmitters and receivers that are designated sparsely located in a region. The fusion of the received data through the utility of a non-linear Kalman filter technique is discussed to predict track through observations from the multistatic system. Target positions and velocities are estimated and the error is shown to converge to zero. The Munkre algorithm is utilized for data and track association to improve error minimization.
