In this paper, the development of a prototypal wireless sensor platform is described, aimed at assisting elderly people and people with disabilities in their daily living activities at home. The wireless sensor network is embedded into a more general home control and monitoring network, from which it can borrow remote communication and supervision facilities, enhancing versatility and reliability. A wearable sensor has been developed, capable of smart recognition of abnormal gait and falls. Effective algorithms have been devised, to make the device suitable for low-power hardware implementation. After initial prototyping phases (based on microcontrollers and FPGA) VLSI synthesis has been carried out, to estimate actual silicon area and power consumption. Then, extensions of the approach have been foreseen, accounting for multiple sensor management. An example of a low cost embedded heartbeat monitor is discussed.

There are over 250 image steganography methods available on the Internet. In digital image steganalysis an analyst has three goals, first determine if an embedded message exists, next determine the embedding method used to create the stego image and finally extract the hidden message. The objective of this paper lies on the second goal, that is, to identify the embedding technique used to create the steganography image. Several detection systems currently exist, so the identification problem becomes one of determining which detection system has correctly identified the embedding method. In this work, the individual detection systems are fused using boosting. Boosting is a powerful technique for combining an ensemble of base classifiers to produce a form of committee with improved performance over any of the single classifiers in the ensemble. The results in this paper show that boosting takes advantage of the individual strengths from each detection systems and classification performance is increased by 10%.

This contribution presents a fusion method for spectral series with the main purpose of obtaining 3D information. The image series to be fused are combined stereo and spectral series gained with a camera array. Therefore, in order to register them, features that are invariant with respect to the varying gray values in the spectral images are extracted. The proposed approach is region based and uses characteristics like size, position and shape for registration. The regions are identified using the watershed transformation. The fusion problem is modeled using energy functionals that are to be optimized. They take into consideration the size, position, shape and correlation of the regions. Using the implemented algorithm, several scenes have been reconstructed. The experimental results show that the proposed method delivers reliable and accurate dense depth maps of combined stereo and spectral series.

We developed a simple and fast lookup-table based method to derive and apply natural daylight colors to multi-band night-time images. The method deploys an optimal color transformation derived from a set of samples taken from a daytime color reference image. The colors in the resulting colorized multiband night-time images closely resemble the colors in the daytime color reference image. Also, object colors remain invariant under panning operations and are independent of the scene content. Here we describe the implementation of this method in two prototype portable dual band realtime night vision systems. One system provides co-aligned visual and near-infrared bands of two image intensifiers, the other provides co-aligned images from a digital image intensifier and an uncooled longwave infrared microbolometer. The co-aligned images from both systems are further processed by a notebook computer. The color mapping is implemented as a realtime lookup table transform. The resulting colorised video streams can be displayed in realtime on head mounted displays and stored on the hard disk of the notebook computer. Preliminary field trials demonstrate the potential of these systems for applications like surveillance, navigation and target detection.

The US Military has been undergoing a radical transition from a traditional "platform-centric" force to one capable of performing in a "Network-Centric" environment. This transformation will place all of the data needed to efficiently meet tactical and strategic goals at the warfighter's fingertips. With access to this information, the challenge of fusing data from across the batttlespace into an operational picture for real-time Situational Awareness emerges. In such an environment, centralized fusion approaches will have limited application due to the constraints of real-time communications networks and computational resources. To overcome these limitations, we are developing a formalized architecture for fusion and track adjudication that allows the distribution of fusion processes over a dynamically created and managed information network. This network will support the incorporation and utilization of low level tracking information within the Army Distributed Common Ground System (DCGS-A) or Future Combat System (FCS). The framework is based on Bowman's Dual Node Network (DNN) architecture that utilizes a distributed network of interlaced fusion and track adjudication nodes to build and maintain a globally consistent picture across all assets.

It is widely recognized that inertial sensors, in particular gyroscopes, can improve the latency and accuracy of orientation tracking by fusing the inertial measurements with data from other sensors. In our previous work, we introduced the concepts of spatial relationship graphs and spatial relationship patterns to formally model multi-sensor tracking setups and derive valid applications of well-known algorithms in order to infer new spatial relationships for tracking and calibration. In this work, we extend our approach by providing additional spatial relationship patterns that transform incremental rotations and add gyroscope alignment and fusion. The usefulness of the resulting tracking configurations is evaluated in two different scenarios with both inside-out and outside-in tracking.

sensor networks with a number of wirelessly interconnected devices have proven useful for many applications in diverse domains. The challenges of scale and resource constraints posed by this system have led to development of novel network protocols and services, but their focus has been on traditional metrics of quality of service of network data transport. Arguing that a holistic view or these systems requires an end-to-end view that combines networking quality of service concerns with the data quality and integrity of sensor sources and performance of sensor fusion algorithms, we propose to use the "Quality of Information" (QoI) as a performance metric associated with the end result produced by a sensor network. In this paper we describe the factors that affect QoI, and describe how network protocols and services can be designed to he QoI aware.

The Advanced Linked Extended Reconnaissance & Targeting (ALERT) Technology Demonstration (TD) project is addressing many operational needs of the future Canadian Army's Surveillance and Reconnaissance forces. Using the surveillance system of the Coyote reconnaissance vehicle as an experimental platform, the ALERT TD project aims to significantly enhance situational awareness by fusing multi-sensor and tactical data, developing automated processes, and integrating beyond line-of-sight sensing. The project is. exploiting important advances made in computer processing capability, displays technology, digital communications, and sensor technology since the design of the original surveillance system. As the major research area within the project, concepts are discussed for displaying and fusing multi-sensor and tactical data within an Enhanced Operator Control Station (EOCS). The sensor data can originate from the Coyote's own visible-band and IR cameras, laser rangefinder, and ground-surveillance radar, as well as from beyond line-of-sight systems such as mini-UAVs and unattended ground sensors. Video-rate image processing has been developed to assist the operator to detect poorly visible targets. As a second major area of research, automatic target cueing capabilities have been added to the system. These include scene change detection, automatic target detection and aided target recognition algorithms processing both IR and visible-band images to draw the operator's attention to possible targets. The merits of incorporating scene change detection algorithms are also discussed. In the area of multi-sensor data fusion, up to Joint Defence Labs level 2 has been demonstrated. The human factors engineering aspects of the user interface in this complex environment are presented, drawing upon multiple user group sessions with military surveillance system operators. The authors have been involved in uncertainty analyses of multiple-sensor measurement procedures and Data fusion (DF) algorithms under development in the 6(TH) FP WARMER (Water Risk Management in EuRope) project [1]. The main goal of this uncertainty study was evaluation of measurement procedure-dependent factors that determine basic uncertainty characteristics, i.e. accuracy and precision. Several uncertainty sources were taken into account, most important being: read-out/sensor modeling inaccuracy and dosing imprecision. Results of uncertainty analyses will be used to optimize measurement procedures for potentiometric sensor-based measurement heads and to perform rational cost/accuracy trade-off of in-situ measurement probe components. The paper presents the most important results of the uncertainty study. Accuracy and precision of different variants of in-situ measurement system were estimated with Monte Carlo method, using realistic estimates of uncertainty sources. First type of results concerns analysis of measurement uncertainty sensitivity to different sources of imprecision. Next, dependence of measurement uncertainty upon measurement scenario is shown. Single- and double-sensor measurements with different selectivity coefficients are compared. Advantages and limitations of multiple sensor Data fusion are discussed and recommendations formulated.

Several theoretical considerations are known dedicated to mathematical modeling of physical phenomena in ion-selective membranes. They yield full theory of ions complexation in ionophoric membranes. However all these works give results which are not sufficiently simple and do not explain sufficiently accurate a behavior of the sensors. To provide simultaneously accurate and simple model of the ion sensor we must turn to behavioral description instead of the physical one. In this paper several behavioral approaches to modeling of potentiometric sensors are presented. These models are dedicated to WARMER project This project is focused on development of automatic testers for environmental water monitoring. The testers consist of a sensor header, A/D conversion and data processor executing a data fusion program. This program realizes a data fusion algorithm based on a calibration-measurement method or a data-fusion method. All these methods make use of the sensor model. The project accepts only models sufficiently accurate and having sufficiently small number of parameters. Among different models an optimal trade-off has been performed.
