Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) deployed for mission-critical applications face the fundamental challenge of meeting stringent spatiotemporal performance requirements using nodes with limited sensing capacity, Although advance network planning and dense node deployment may initially achieve the required performance, they often fail to adapt to the unpredictability of physical reality. This paper explores efficient we of mobile sensors to address the limitations of static WSNs in target detection. We propose a data fusion model that enables static and mobile sensors to effectively collaborate in target detection. An optimal sensor movement scheduling algorithm is developed to minimize the total moving distance of sensors, while achieving a set of spatiotemporal performance requirements including high detection probability, low system false alarm rate and bounded detection delay. The effectiveness of our approach is validated by extensive simulations based on real data traces collected by 23 sensor nodes.

Maritime surveillance of coastal regions requires operational staff to integrate a large amount of information from a variety of military and civilian sources. The diverse nature of the information sources makes complete automation difficult. The volume of vessels tracked and the number of sources makes it difficult for the limited operation centre staff to fuse all the information manually within a reasonable timeframe. In this paper, a conceptual decision space is proposed to provide a framework for automating the process of operators integrating the sources needed to maintain Maritime Domain Awareness. The decision space contains all potential pairs of ship tracks that are candidates for fusion. The location of the candidate pairs in this defined space depends on the value of the parameters used to make a decision. In the application presented, three independent parameters are used: the source detection efficiency, the geo-feasibility, and the track quality. One of three decisions is applied to each candidate track pair based on these three parameters: 1. to accept the fusion, in which case tracks are fused in one track, 2. to reject the fusion, in which case the candidate track pair is removed from the list of potential fusion, and 3. to defer the fusion, in which case no fusion occurs but the candidate track pair remains in the list of potential fusion until sufficient information is provided. This paper demonstrates in an operational setting how a proposed conceptual space is used to optimize the different thresholds for automatic fusion decision while minimizing the list of unresolved cases when the decision is left to the operator.

The task of tracking extended objects or (partly) unresolvable group targets raises new challenges for both data association and track maintenance. Extended objects may give rise to more than one detection per opportunity where the scattering centers may vary from scan to scan. On the other end, group targets (i. e., a number of closely spaced targets moving in a coordinated fashion) often will not cause as many detections as there are individual targets in the group due to limited sensor resolution capabilities. In both cases, tracking and data association under the one target-one detection assumption are no longer applicable. This paper deals with the problem of maintaining a track for an extended object or group target with varying number of detections. Herein, object extension is represented by a random symmetric positive definite matrix. A recently published Bayesian approach to tackling this problem is analyzed and discussed. From there, a new approach is derived that is expected to overcome some of the weaknesses the Bayesian approach suffers from in certain applications.

The rapid development of sensor technology led to large deployments of collections of sensing nodes working together to collect information for light, temperature, atmospheric pressure, air pollutions parameters, images, and other relevant data according to specific Environmental applications. The ability of the sensor networks to collect information accurately and reliably enables building both real-time detection and early warning systems. Environment parameter measurement and supervision received a lot of attention from both academic and industrial research communities around the world. applications supporting decisions for rapid coordinated responses to threats such as bushfires, tsunamis, earthquakes, and other crisis situation have been devised In this paper a combined ontology and rule-bases intelligent system build over a platform for sensor data warehousing for decision support is introduced A combined ontology of sensor networks and sensor data for environment parameter measurement is designed and discussed A set of rule-based systems each tailored to a domain of networked sensors are linked together through a middle-layer of rule-base systems which reason with facts classified and structured as instances of the common sensor ontology. A set of meta-rules direct the intelligent activity of the whole system and requires individual rule-based systems to reason upon specific facts. The paper will also discuss the architecture and algorithms for data mining, fusion and reasoning for specific situation in Environment monitoring and supervision. Results obtained from experiments performed on the system prototype are given at the end of this paper

Though data redundancy can be eliminated at aggregation point to reduce the amount of sensory data transmissions, it introduces new challenges due to multiple flows competing for the limited bandwidth in the vicinity of the aggregation point. On the other hand, waiting for multiple flows to arrive at a centralized node for aggregation not only uses precious memory to store these flows but also increases the delays of sensory data delivery. While traditional aggregation schemes can be characterized as "multipath converging", this paper proposes the use of "multipath expanding" to solve the above problems by exploiting both data fusion and load balancing. We propose a novel directional-controlled fusion (DCF) scheme, which includes two key algorithms, i.e., directional control and multipath fusion. By adjusting a key parameter named multipath fusion factor in DCF, the trade-offs between multipath-converging and multipath-expanding can be easily achieved, in order to satisfy specific QoS requirements from various applications. We present extensive simulations that verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. © Copyright 2008 ICST.

In this paper we propose an advanced air data system architecture based on the concept of Virtual Air Data (VAD). VAD are virtual measurements based on the combination of inertial measurements with weather forecast data coming from a meteorological model. This model can be considered as a virtual sensor that provides information on wind velocities, air temperature and air pressure. A sensor fusion algorithm is then used to determine an estimate of the true air speed components. This kind of approach allows to overcome most of the typical limitations of traditional air data probes and does not require any specific experimental or CFD calibration campaign, nor requires any thermal protection system when dealing with re-entry applications. We also report some preliminary results, based on the post flight analysis of the Dropped Transonic Flight Test mission carried out by the Italian Aerospace Research Center (CIRA). © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

In this paper we propose a general, object-oriented software architecture for model-based visual tracking. The library is general purpose with respect to object model, estimated pose parameters, visual modalities employed, number of cameras and objects, and tracking methodology. The base class structure provides the necessary building blocks for implementing a wide variety of both known and novel tracking systems, integrating different visual modalities, like as color, motion, edge maps etc., in a multi-level fashion, ranging from pixel-level segmentation, up to local features matching and maximum-likelihood object pose estimation. The proposed structure allows integrating known data association algorithms for simultaneous, multiple object tracking tasks, as well as data fusion techniques for robust, multi-sensor tracking;within these contexts, parallelization of each tracking algorithm can as well be easily accomplished. In this paper we present the results of applying a general purpose feature combination framework for tracking to the specific task of tracking vehicles in UAV data sets. In the fusion framework used (previously presented elsewhere(1)) vehicles' pixel-based features from multiple channels, specifically RGB and thermal IR, are split across separate individual spatiogram trackers. The use of spatiograms allows embedding of some spatial information into the models whilst also avoiding the exponential increase in computational load and memory requirements associated with the more commonly used histogram. This tracking framework is embedded in a complete system for detecting and tracking vehicles. The system first carries out pre-processing to ensure spatially and temporally aligned visible spectrum and IR data prior to tracking. Vehicle detection in the initial two frames is achieved by first compensating for camera motion, followed by frame differencing and post-processing (thresholding and size filtering) to identify vehicle regions. Each vehicle is then described by a bounding box and this is used to generate a set of spatiograms for each of the available data channels. The detected vehicle is then tracked using the spatiogram tracker framework. Results of experiments on a variety of UAV data sets indicate the promising performance of the overall system, even in the presence of significant illumination variation, partial and full occlusions and significant camera motion and focus change. Results are particularly encouraging given that we do not periodically re-initialise the detection phase and this points to the robustness of the tracking framework.

Realtime multisensor image registration algorithms must be computationally efficient. Often, simplifying assumptions are made to reduce computational time. However, these simplifications usually trade registration convergence performance for reduced runtime. For non-realtime applications where computational resources are not severely limited, this tradeoff may be reversed to improve convergence performance at the expense of increased computational cost. To this end we introduce a smart iterative approach to minimize mis-registrations and thus optimize registration convergence probability. The approach involves performing a registration sweep over a smart sampling of parameters governing feature generation. This approach involves use of two components;a feature sensitivity measure (FSM) and a registration verification metric (VM). The FSM measures the effect of parameter values on feature set variability. This measure enables choice of a suitable parameter sampling density to use for performing iterative registration solution search. The VM provides feedback on the registration solution verity in the absence of ground truth and is used to identify a converged solution. First, we provide an overview of the registration framework used to generate convergence results. Next we introduce the FSM and present mathematical properties. We then describe the VM and present the iterative algorithm. We present numerical results illustrating FSM convergence with increasing parameter sampling density for Canny edge features in SAR imagery. We illustrate use of FSM convergence behavior to select a suitable parameter sampling density for use in the iterative algorithm. Finally, SAR-to-EO registration performance results are presented showing improved convergence probability.

A review of several recently-developed maximum likelihood template-based automatic target recognition (ATR) algorithms for extended targets in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery data is presented. The algorithms are based on 'gradient' peaks, 'ceiling' peaks, edges, corners, shadows, and rectangular-fits. A weight-based Bayesian maximum likelihood scheme to combine multiple template-based classifiers is presented. The feature weights are derived from prior recognition accuracies, i.e., confidence levels, achieved by individual template-based classifiers. Application of feature-based weights instead of target specific feature-based weights reduces the resulting ATR accuracy by only a small amount. Preliminary results indicate that (1) the ceiling peaks provide the most target-discriminating power, (2) inclusion of more target discriminating features leads to higher classification accuracy. Dempster-Shaffer rule of combination is suggested as a potential alternative to the implemented Bayesian decision theory approach to resolve conflicting reports from multiple template-based classifiers.
