sensor fusion and virtual sensors have been extensively used in applications requiring the use of high-level abstract information derived from multiple sensory inputs, ranging from defence systems to intelligent environments. In this paper, we present distributed mechanisms for enabling virtual sensors in intelligent environments using service oriented sensor networks (SOSNs). A SOSN brings the concept of service-oriented architecture (SOA) into the sensor network domain, where each sensor is represented as a software service. A SOSN enhances the programmability of sensor networks by decoupling sensor deployment from application development and allows applications to dynamically discover, access and compose sensor services. In our previous work, we had proposed a framework model running inside the service layer of a SOSN for querying virtual data and on-demand creation of virtual sensors. However, the service layer of a SOSN is centralized and this leads to scalability and latency issues in large scale deployments. In this paper, we address the issues of scalability and latency and propose distributed algorithms for in-network creation and execution of virtual sensors. We also present mechanisms for monitoring data quality and provide fault tolerance techniques utilizing sensor-based approximation for coping with the loss of multiple physical sensors. These algorithms not only allow us to reap the benefits of SOSNs but also prevent potential scalability and latency issues. We also show through simulation experiments that our mechanisms require minimal involvement of the service layer and result in significantly lower latency and energy consumption as compared to the centralized stream-based approach.

Wireless sensor networks are valid candidate to monitor environmental parameters in dangerous areas. In many such applications, the sensors first sense the environment and then average their measurements to compute the final estimator in a completely distributed fashion. Usually, there is no meaningful way to decide when the sensing stage should be terminated to start the average procedure. What happens if the network is impaired before that the distributed estimator is computed? Oppositely, what happens if the sensing stage is too short (i.e., the network has collected only a small amount of data when the averaging step starts)? We propose a scheme - and call it running consensus - where the sensing and the averaging stages are simultaneous: The network continues collecting data while computing on-the-fly the distributed estimator. The asymptotic behavior of the running consensus is investigated and compared with that of the classical consensus algorithms, the impact of the network topology is discussed, and examples of applications are presented.

An application plannerpsilas point of view of sensor-enabled detection systems is considered and a hypothesis-testing-based computational framework for evaluating the quality of information (QoI) supported by a sensor network deployment is explored. Through a common, modular analysis framework that decomposes the computational burden of QoI calculation, the QoI properties of various decision architectures are investigated and trade-offs explored at the sensor, cluster, and system-level. Both finite and infinite-sized networks are considered and extensions of the analysis framework to faulty sensor and the impact of calibration are also investigated.

It is widely recognized that inertial sensors, in particular gyroscopes, can improve the latency and accuracy of orientation tracking by fusing the inertial measurements with data from other sensors. In our previous work, we introduced the concepts of spatial relationship graphs and spatial relationship patterns to formally model multi-sensor tracking setups and derive valid applications of well-known algorithms in order to infer new spatial relationships for tracking and calibration. In this work, we extend our approach by providing additional spatial relationship patterns that transform incremental rotations and add gyroscope alignment and fusion. The usefulness of the resulting tracking configurations is evaluated in two different scenarios with both inside-out and outside-in tracking.

In this paper, we present an optimal local map registration algorithm for constructing global maps from local relative maps for wireless sensor network localization applications. In the algorithm, local maps are transformed into a global map using a set of affine transforms with each consisting of a rotation, a reflection and a translation for each individual local map. The optimal transform is found by minimizing the discrepancies, in the global map, of the common sensor nodes shared by different local maps. A computationally efficient gradient projection algorithm is developed for finding the optimal transforms. The local map registration approach can solve many of the problems encountered by pairwise map merging based approaches and is able to achieve global optimal performance. It provides a systematic approach for constructing global maps from local maps. Computer simulations are used to demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

sensor deployment is a key issue in target detection. While a lot of works have been done to achieve "physical coverage'', few work addresses meeting high detection accuracy presented as a specific high detection probability and a low false alarm rate. In this paper, we employ a data-fusion based collaborative detection scheme for achieving guaranteed accuracy in sensor deployment. A "density first'' clustering algorithm is adopt to organize preselected surveillance locations into deployment units, place sensors to cover these locations from the intensive region to sparse one. The simulation results show that our deployment algorithm can significantly reduce total number of deployed sensors with guaranteed accuracy compare with the previous works.

sensor networks with a number of wirelessly inter-connected devices have proven useful for many applications in diverse domains. The challenges of scale and resource constraints posed by this system have led to development of novel network protocols and services, but their focus has been on traditional metrics of quality of service of network data transport. Arguing that a holistic view of these systems requires an end-to-end view that combines networking quality of service concerns with the data quality and integrity of sensor sources and performance of sensor fusion algorithms, we propose to use the ldquoquality of informationrdquo (QoI) as a performance metric associated with the end result produced by a sensor network. In this paper we describe the factors that affect QoI, and describe how network protocols and services can be designed to be QoI aware.

In this paper, the development of a prototypal wireless sensor platform is described, aimed at assisting elderly people and people with disabilities in their daily living activities at home. The wireless sensor network is embedded into a more general home control and monitoring network, from which it can borrow remote communication and supervision facilities, enhancing versatility and reliability. A wearable sensor has been developed, capable of smart recognition of abnormal gait and falls. Effective algorithms have been devised, to make the device suitable for low-power hardware implementation. After initial prototyping phases (based on microcontrollers and FPGA) VLSI synthesis has been carried out, to estimate actual silicon area and power consumption. Then, extensions of the approach have been foreseen, accounting for multiple sensor management. An example of a low cost embedded heartbeat monitor is discussed.

Future buildings and environments are envisioned to provide ambient intelligence, adapting to a userpsilas preferences based on information about his context and status. Smart heterogeneous sensor networks are well suited data sources for such environments, because they allow for dynamic adaptation to newly added sensor types and novel tasks. Realistic verification of protocols and algorithms for smart networks poses special constraints on testbeds, necessitating support for heterogeneous platforms and mobility in the network. These distinct requirements limit the usability of many known testbeds of purely homogeneous nature. In this paper, we determine a minimum set of premises for smart heterogeneous sensor network testbeds and evaluate existing architectures with respect to these requirements. We then present our tubicle node platform, an integrated sensor network node providing inherent support for heterogeneity and fulfilling the determined set of requirements in their entirety. A set of twenty tubicles forms the basis for our *** testbed. Specifically designed for heterogeneity, the architecture allows rapid validation of smart sensor network algorithms and quick experimental setup.

In airborne applications the high degree of reliability is required. Typical methods for assuring the reliability are development guides (DO178), testing, quality checking (AS9100) and certification processes. Despite these processes provide high level of safety and reliability of the products, the electronic devices can fail from different reasons. Also, one of the main present problems today is incompatibility of communication interfaces of so called smart sensors. This article proposes fusion of smart sensor standard IEEE 1451 and information necessary for sensor self-validation of sensor output. In this paper estimation of the feedback magnitude measured by an intelligent servomechanism system is presented. This system is being developed for a specific UAV application. The necessary data are saved within the TEDS memory of the extended IEEE 1451 standard. In the paper, following topics are discussed: methods of magnitudes validation and estimation, standards of smart sensors, the servopsilas implementation and employment in an UAV project, algorithms and data stored in the TEDS memory.
