We have formulated the data collection process within wireless sensor networks as a scheduling problem to alleviate workload on the data collection centers. A sensor device has three tasks, which are mainly sensing data, processing and transmitting the collected data. We modeled the sensor’s three tasks as a task-flow graph (TFG), and then we combined all TFGs for all sensors within WSN as a super task-flow graph (STFG). We have utilized two scheduling algorithms, as soon as possible (ASAP) and as late as possible (ALAP), to order all tasks within STFG subject to the data collection centers’ limitations. Our experimental results provide excellent bounds on how early and how late to schedule all sensors’ tasks with the variation of the number of data collection centers.

This tutorial presents a state-of-the-art survey of advanced applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). applications include: the detection and recognition of targets in SAR imagery, and the detection of targets under trees (and in the open) using change detection (coherent change detection, full-polarization change detection, etc). A fully polarimetric SAR sensor is described. Models of clutter and targets are developed from analysis of full-polarization SAR imagery. algorithms for optimum (GLRT) processing of full-polarization data are derived, including the polarimetric whitening filter (PWF) and the polarimetric matched filter (PMF). Polarization-based discrimination features (polarization entropy, anisotropy, etc.) are developed and applied to SAR image terrain classification. Model-based and template-based target recognition systems are described and classifier performance results versus resolution and polarization are summarized for 10-and 20-target classifiers. Super-resolution algorithms are applied to SAR imagery and target recognition performance improvements demonstrated. Multi-polarization and multi-pass change detection algorithms are developed and demonstrated using UHF SAR imagery of targets under trees; fusion of multi-polarization coherent and non-coherent change detection algorithms is demonstrated. The effect of SAR image compression on change detection performance is quantified. Change detection performance using multi-pass VHF SAR imagery of targets under trees is demonstrated using data gathered by the Swedish CARABAS SAR system.

In this paper, we study the problem of distributed detection in the presence of unknown carrier frequency offset (CFO) and initial phase, the issue we encounter in the emerging applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) due to hardware constraints on sensor nodes. Suboptimal fusion rules taking into account CFO and initial phase and non-data-aided methods of low complexity for CFO and initial phase shift estimation are developed. Instead of the estimation performance, the objective function is in terms of the final detection performance. In particular, a generalized likelihood ratio test is proposed first for distributed detection in the presence of unknown CFOs and phase shifts. Then computationally simplified algorithms are proposed under the high and low signal-to-noise ratio regimes, respectively. Specifically, under the high-SNR condition, a time-averaging autocorrelator is used for CFO estimation and the Chair-Varshney fusion rule is used for decision fusion; while under the low-SNR condition, maximum likelihood estimation can be realized by a fast Fourier transform. The simulation results show that the developed fusion schemes are robust to CFO and initial phase.

The task of tracking extended objects or (partly) unresolvable group targets raises new challenges for both data association and track maintenance. Extended objects may give rise to more than one detection per opportunity where the scattering centers may vary from scan to scan. On the other end, group targets (i. e., a number of closely spaced targets moving in a coordinated fashion) often will not cause as many detections as there are individual targets in the group due to limited sensor resolution capabilities. In both cases, tracking and data association under the one target-one detection assumption are no longer applicable. This paper deals with the problem of maintaining a track for an extended object or group target with varying number of detections. Herein, object extension is represented by a random symmetric positive definite matrix. A recently published Bayesian approach to tackling this problem is analyzed and discussed. From there, a new approach is derived that is expected to overcome some of the weaknesses the Bayesian approach suffers from in certain applications.

Though data redundancy can be eliminated at aggregation point to reduce the amount of sensory data transmissions, it introduces new challenges due to multiple flows competing for the limited bandwidth in the vicinity of the aggregation point. On the other hand, waiting for multiple flows to arrive at a centralized node for aggregation not only uses precious memory to store these flows but also increases the delays of sensory data delivery. While traditional aggregation schemes can be characterized as "multipath converging", this paper proposes the use of "multipath expanding" to solve the above problems by exploiting both data fusion and load balancing. We propose a novel directional-controlled fusion (DCF) scheme, which includes two key algorithms, i.e., directional control and multipath fusion. By adjusting a key parameter named multipath fusion factor in DCF, the trade-offs between multipath-converging and multipath-expanding can be easily achieved, in order to satisfy specific QoS requirements from various applications. We present extensive simulations that verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) enable a wealth of new applications where remote estimation is essential. Individual sensors simultaneously sense, process and transmit measured information over a lossy wireless network to a central base station, which processes the data and produces an optimal estimate of the state. In order to provide a quantitative design principles on the density of sensor required, we investigate the tradeoff between the estimation performance and the number of communicating nodes with respect to the major MAC protocols used in WSNs. The correlation between packet reception probability and the number of communicating nodes can be studied by selecting a Markov model for the communication protocol. A multi-sensor measurement fusion model is then used to feed a multi-sensor Kalman filtering algorithm to assess the impact of MAC protocols on estimation performance. The proposed approach is placed in the framework of convex optimization problems. A target tracking example illustrates the proposed approach.

New technology is needed to counter the growing threat of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) terrorist attacks. Joint Department of Defense (DoD) CBRNE programs can support homeland-defense efforts in this area. This paper explains some DoD- developed technology involved in advancing and integrating hardware and software components into an advanced threat-detection system. This research has three thrusts: (1) new, next-generation individual and arrayed CBRNE sensors. (2) new deployment methods for lightweight, modular sensors, and (3) the integration of sensors into a network where intelligent software agents, data-fusion algorithms, and expert systems enhance the user's ability to retrieve and understand the data.

The rapid development of sensor technology led to large deployments of collections of sensing nodes working together to collect information for light, temperature, atmospheric pressure, air pollutions parameters, images, and other relevant data according to specific Environmental applications. The ability of the sensor networks to collect information accurately and reliably enables building both real-time detection and early warning systems. Environment parameter measurement and supervision received a lot of attention from both academic and industrial research communities around the world. applications supporting decisions for rapid coordinated responses to threats such as bushfires, tsunamis, earthquakes, and other crisis situation have been devised. In this paper a combined ontology and rule-bases intelligent system build over a platform for sensor data warehousing for decision support is introduced. A combined ontology of sensor networks and sensor data for environment parameter measurement is designed and discussed. A set of rule-based systems each tailored to a domain of networked sensors are linked together through a middle-layer of rule-base systems which reason with facts classified and structured as instances of the common sensor ontology. A set of meta-rules direct the intelligent activity of the whole system and requires individual rule-based systems to reason upon specific facts. The paper will also discuss the architecture and algorithms for data mining, fusion and reasoning for specific situation in Environment monitoring and supervision. Results obtained from experiments performed on the system prototype are given at the end of this paper.
