In this paper, we consider the problem of sensor resource management in decentralized tracking systems with asynchronous communication and sensor selection. Due to the availability of cheap sensors, it is possible to deploy a large number of sensors and use them to monitor a large surveillance region. Even though a large number of sensors are available, due to frequency, power and other physical limitations, only a maximum of certain number of sensors can be used by any fusion center at any one time. The problem is then to select the sensor subsets that should be used at each sampling time in order to optimize the tracking performance under the given constraints. In recent papers, we proposed algorithms to handle the above problem in centralized, distributed and decentralized architectures. However, in the paper for sensor subset selection for decentralized architecture, we assumed that all the fusion centers change their sensors at the same time, and their sensor change time interval is fixed and known. However, in general case, fusion centers may change their sensors at different time, and their sensor change intervals may not be fixed. In this case, the sensor management become more difficult. We have to decide when to change the subsets, and how to incorporate the changes made in the neighboring fusion centers in selecting the future sensor subsets. We propose an efficient algorithm to handle the above problem in real time. Simulation results illustrating the performance of the proposed algorithm are also presented.

In this work we investigate the relationships between features representing images, fusion schemes for these features and kernel types used in an Web-based Adaptive Image Retrieval System. Using the Kernel Rocchio learning method, several kernels having polynomial and Gaussian forms are applied to general images represented by annotations and by color histograms in RGB and HSV color spaces. We propose different fusion schemes, which incorporate kernel selector component(s). We perform experiments to study the relationships between a concatenated vector and several kernel types. Experimental results show that an appropriate kernel could significantly improve the performance of the retrieval system.

The paper presents a wireless sensor network-based mobile countersniper system. A. sensor node consists of a helmet-mounted microphone array, a COTS MICAz mote for internode communication and a custom sensorboard that implements the acoustic detection and Time of Arrival (ToA) estimation algorithms on an FPGA. A 3-axis compass provides self orientation and Bluetooth is used for communication with the soldier's PDA running the data fusion and the user interface. The heterogeneous sensorfusion algorithm can work with data from a single sensor or it can fuse ToA or Angle of Arrival (AoA) observations of muzzle blasts and ballistic shockwaves from multiple sensors. The system estimates the trajectory, the range, the caliber and the weapon type. The paper presents the system design and the results from an independent evaluation at the US Army Aberdeen Test Center. The system performance is characterized by 1-degree trajectory precision and over 95% caliber estimation accuracy for all shots, and close to 100% weapon estimation accuracy for 4 out of 6 guns tested.

Disparity and uncertainty of information sources are both significant problems in information fusion. This paper investigates the problem of disparity in general, and in conjunction with FLASH - a hybrid information-fusion cognitive-processing approach we developed. Different forms of disparity are identified and their categorization is presented, and their implications on the information fission process are discussed. The issue of feature-level vs. decision-level fusion is investigated, and the methods of coping with disparity within FLASH are presented. Source uncertainty estimation techniques are discussed as well. Disparity studies and the results of computational experiments related to them are presented. These studies are suggestive of the potential of the FLASH hybrid approach for fusion of disparate information sources.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are quickly becoming popular solutions for various scientific and commercial problems. applications that call for large networks are becoming a wide spread occurrence. The difficulty in these large sensor networks is ensuring that the required information is able to traverse the network efficiently and reliably. Predominantly, information is routed through the network using flat or hierarchical architectures. This paper discusses the current problems with credibility in the WSN research field. Credibility is discussed briefly and an example of a routing protocol that exhibits some of these flawed characteristics is discussed. The protocol is then modified to create a newer more credible version where the results arc shown and further discussed.
