The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory has developed an affordable, multisensory, real-time detection system for damage control and situational awareness, called "volume sensor." The system provides standoff identification of events within a space (e.g. flaming and smoldering fires, pipe ruptures, and gas releases) for U.S. Navy vessels. A data fusion approach was used to integrate spectral sensors, acoustic sensors, and video image detection algorithms. Bayesian-based decision algorithms improved event detection rates while reducing false positives. Full scale testing demonstrated that the prototype Volume sensor performed as well or better than commercial video image detection and point-detection systems in critical quality metrics for fire detection while also providing additional situational awareness. The design framework developed for volume sensor can serve as a template for the integration of heterogeneous sensors into networks for a variety of real-time sensing and situational awareness applications.

sensor networks are of great interest to complement human capabilities when monitoring wide-forest areas. This paper describes a remote system scheme for automatic forest surveillance based on infrared sensors. A complete system for forest fire detection is firstly presented although we focus on processing the images from infrared sensors. The proposed scheme based on infrared image processing performs early detection of any fire threat. With the aim of determining the presence or absence of fire, the proposed algorithms performs the fusion of different detectors which exploit different expected characteristics of a real fire, like persistence and increase. Theoretical results and practical simulations are presented to corroborate the control of the probability of false alarm (PFA). Probability of detection (PD) dependence on signal to noise ratio (SNR) is also evaluated.

This paper explains a comprehensive navigation solution for outdoor mobile robots that doesn't have steering mechanism. The solution uses a combination of Global Positioning System (GPS) and magnetic compass for localization as well as for path planning of the robots. A sensor fusion strategy between GPS receiver and compass is adopted to subside the errors generated by each one of them. Two navigation techniques viz. Absolute Orientation Fix and Trajectory Steering Principle are discussed with their applications and applicability. An iterative algorithm that conglomerates the functionality of GPS receiver, magnetic compass, processor function, navigation principles and motor drivers is also explained. The algorithm has been implemented on a robot platform whose architecture is also discussed.

That is always an important topic to extend the whole lifetime in wireless network environment. How to make use of the consumption of the limited energy in the sensor nodes? How many sensor nodes can establish an optimum cluster? This paper proposes an optimum nodes number on clustering-based routing protocol called CCC (coverage and connectivity method to cluster topology), which utilizes a node of its' optimum coverage and connectivity to transmit to another node and calculate the quantity of the nodes of an optimum cluster. In this article, the CCC, which is distributed the energy dissipation of sensor nodes and average energy savings. The performance of CCC is then compared to clustering-based schemes such as low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH). Simulation results show that CCC improves network lifetime and reduces whole average of energy consumption.

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has a significant program involving the development of UGS (unattended ground sensors) that addresses a variety of military and government missions. ARL's program involves practically every aspect of sensor development including devices, detection and fusion algorithms, communications, and command and control. One element of the ARL UGS program involves the development of low cost sensing techniques for the urban environment and one embodiment of this effort is the multi-modal sensor (MMS). The program objectives of this effort were to develop a networked personnel detection sensor with the following major criteria: low cost in volume production, support for MOUT (military operations in urban terrain) missions, and employ non-imaging sensor diversity techniques. The MMS sensor was an early prototype intended to demonstrate that low cost sensing techniques were suitable for the urban environment and a viable alternative to higher cost and fidelity sensors for some applications. The MMS is used today as a demonstration system and a test bed for many facets of urban sensing. This chapter describe many aspects of the MMS design including: hardware, software, and communications. The detection algorithms was described including the collection of target signatures and validation of algorithm performance. Finally, MMS usage in a force protection application was described including issues encountered when integrating into a larger system.

The technology of hardware algorithm design process is considered. It is shown the possibility of creating the formal system which allows generating different hardware solutions based upon the same basic algorithm. It is achieved by having a number of intermediate descriptions for the basic algorithm which are gradually refine it and finally transform it to the hardware. E.g. first algorithm is described abstractly and at the next step it is described with taking into account computational resources as registers, memory, processors. Different hardware implementations are results of formal algorithm transformations from one representation to another. It is shown that common hardware architectures as state machines, pipelines and synchronization elements can be described as templates and the basic algorithm once described can be easily ported to different architectures. The idea is elaborated by an example of simple computational algorithm and its different implementations including the form of the sensor network. The formal process is shown and analysis of different implementations by energy efficiency criteria is considered.

The problem of optimized distributed detection in a system of networked sensors involves a number of design aspects, including balancing probabilities of missed detection and false alarm as well as managing the communication resources through proper in-network information fusion. Moreover, a number of tradeoffs must be exercised, such as the one between the computational requirements for information fusion and sensor control and the communication requirements for information exchange. Therefore, overall system design decisions are best made by jointly considering the impact of design aspects and tradeoffs on the overall system performance. This paper addresses in-network fusion and associated networking algorithms that improve detection performance and energy efficiency for a multistatic sonar application. This is achieved by exchanging and fusing contacts among sonar buoys before transmission out offield. In-network fusion utilizes lower cost buoy-to-buoy communication for the majority of the data communication and enables a reduction in random uncorrelated false alarms by only reporting detections from multiple buoys that present sufficient correlation. The reduction of out-of-field contact transmissions allows a lower signal excess threshold for each buoy, corresponding to an increased probability of detection. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our distributed in-network fusion through both analysis and high fidelity sonar simulations.

In this paper, a sequential track association algorithm for multiple electronic support measures (ESM) sensors is proposed based on the application of clustering techniques. Association metrics are developed based on the use of the information theoretic criteria, in particular, the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). The proposed association algorithm is able to handle track components of differing numbers of subcomponents including incomplete and erroneous ones. It has the advantage of not requiring any subjective threshold setting in deciding a non-association. Computer simulation and actual ESM processors are used to demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed association approach.

Existing mechanisms for querying wireless sensor networks leak client interests to the servers performing the queries. The leaks are not only in terms of specific regions but also of client access patterns. In this paper we introduce the problem of preserving the privacy of clients querying a wireless sensor network owned by untrusted organizations. We investigate two architectures and their corresponding trust models. For the first model, consisting of multiple, mutually distrusting servers governing the network, we devise an efficient protocol, SPYC, and show that it provides full query privacy. For the second model, where all queries are performed through a single server, we introduce two metrics for quantifying the privacy achieved by a client's query sequence. We propose a suite of practical algorithms, then analyze the privacy and efficiency levels they provide. Our TOSSIM simulations show that the proposed query mechanisms are communication efficient while significantly improving client query privacy levels.

The large end face run-out is a kind of shape and position tolerance, and is an important index in deciding the class of the tapered roller. The auto-measuring and sorting equipments for the tapered roller introduced in this article is an intelligent measuring equipment that orientates in pursuing measurement and choosing of every tapered roller on grinding spot. According to professional standard about the tapered roller, the large end face run-out (notated as S DW ) must be measured dynamically during revolving on normal V-shape table. In order to eliminate the disturbance caused by electromagnetism interference and machine vibration, this equipment adopts multi-cycle measuring under single sensor, making better use of the regeneration of the sampling signal and based on analysis of the main factors leading to the large end face run-out and signal characteristics. On the other hand, two kinds of signal-characteristics-based data association threshold filtering algorithm and an improved weight arithmetic mean data fusion algorithm are applied on data processing software embedded in it. This equipment has been proved by practical application and has obtained a Chinese patent.
