In this paper we utilize the Projection-Slice Synthetic Discriminant Function Filters, PSDF, in concert with an Independent Component Analysis technique to simultaneously reduce the data set that represents each of the training images and to emphasize subtle differences in each of the training images. These differences are encoded into the PSDF in order to improve the filter sensitivity for the recognition and identification of protein images formed from a cryo-electron microscopic imaging process. The PSDF and Independent Component Analysis provide a premise not only for the identification of the class of structures under consideration, but also for detecting the orientation of the structures in these images. The protein structures found in cryo-electron microscopic imaging represent a class of objects that have low resolution and contrast and subtle variation. This poses a challenge in design of filters to recognize these structures due to false targets that often have similar characteristics as the protein structures. The incorporation of a component analysis and eigen values conditioning in forming the filter provides an enhanced approach of de-correlating images prior to their incorporation into the filter. We present our method of filter synthesis and the results of the application of this modified filter to a protein structure recognition problem.

The changing face of contemporary military conflicts has forced a major shift of focus in tactical planning and evaluation from the classical Cold War battlefield to an asymmetric guerrilla-type warfare in densely populated urban areas. The new arena of conflict presents unique operational difficulties due to factors like complex mobility restrictions and the necessity to preserve civilian lives and infrastructure. In this paper we present a novel method for autonomous agent control in an urban environment. Our approach is based on fusing terrain information and agent goals for the purpose of transforming the problem of navigation in a complex environment with many obstacles into the easier problem of navigation in a virtual obstacle-free space. The main advantage of our approach is its ability to act as an adapter layer for a number of efficient agent control techniques which normally show poor performance when applied to an environment with many complex obstacles. Because of the very low computational and space complexity at runtime, our method is also particularly well suited for simulation or control of a huge number of agents (military as well as civilian) in a complex urban environment where traditional path-planning may be too expensive or where a just-in-time decision with hard real-time constraints is required.

Modem Unattended Ground sensor (UGS) systems require transmission of high quality imagery to a remote location while meeting severe operational constraints such as extended mission life using battery operation. This paper describes a robust imagery system that provides excellent performance for both long range and short range stand-off scenarios. The imaging devices include a joint EO and IR solution that features low power consumption, quick turn-on time, high resolution images. advanced AGC and exposure control algorithms, digital zoom, and compact packaging. Intelligent camera operation is provided by the System Controller, which allows fusion of multiple sensor inputs and intelligent target recognition. The System Controller's communications package is interoperable with all SEIWG-005 compliant sensors. Image transmission is provided via VHF, UHF, or SATCOM links. The system has undergone testing at Yuma Proving Ground and Ft. Huachuca, as well as extensive company testing. Results from these field tests are given.

There is rapid growth in the development of ultra-low power processors, radios, memory, and architectures that form the basis for wireless sensor nodes. Smart distributed wireless sensor nodes, originally developed for military applications over 10 years ago, are finding increased use for wireless machinery condition monitoring for industrial and commercial applications. The major drawback to low-cost wireless sensor nodes is the need to regularly replace batteries. This paper describes a prototype self-powered wireless sensor system deployed in a shipboard application. The sensor node scavenges energy from machinery vibration and uses this energy to power an embedded processor, sensors, and radio. Vibration data and energy harvesting efficiency data is periodically transmitted to a data collection server on the ship. Important issues are presented including the efficient design of the energy harvesting module, power conversion and power storage, communications, power management, embedded diagnostic algorithms, site survey and wireless sensor node installation, and the need for a systems-level approach for self-powered wireless sensor nodes. Extensions to this core work are presented that include adaptive power scavenging and self-powered sensor nodes embedded in machinery.

The recent explosion in capability of embedded and portable electronics has not been matched by battery technology. The slow growth of battery energy density has limited device lifetime and added weight and volume. Passive energy harvesting from solar radiation, thermal sources, or mechanical vibration has potentially wide application in wearable and embedded sensors to complement batteries. The amount of energy from harvesting is typically small and highly variable, requiring circuits and architectures which are low power and can scale their power consumption with user requirements and available energy. We describe several circuit techniques for achieving these goals in signal processing applications for wireless sensor network nodes such as using Distributed Arithmetic to implement energy scalable signal processing algorithms. In addition, we propose increasing vibration energy harvesting efficiency by eliminating AC/DC conversion electronics, and have investigated self-timed circuits, power-on-reset circuitry, and memory for energy harvesting AC power supplies. These techniques can also be applied to energy harvesting from other sources. A chip will be fabricated to test the proposed circuits.

We report on ongoing research regarding the development of open mobile robot architectures. Preliminary results of our work show that a great degree of modularity and complexity in mobile robot design can be achieved, by simply using off-the-shelf available hardware components. A hardware robotic platform would not be nearly as efficient, if it wouldn't be sustained by an adequate software system. We are proposing the use and the development of the Player/Stage software project, of which we a reactive contributors, as the backbone of our software robotic platform. This paper presents the experimental results regarding the development of the ZeeRO mobile robot, with an emphasis on its hardware and software architecture. We give insight on the structure of the main modules (navigation, sensing, processing), as well as the robot's interface with the Player server. Several tests with virtual environment navigation algorithms by means of simulation tools (Stage, Gazebo) have also been conducted. A small section of the paper is dedicated to Javaclient a Player/Stage client for the Java programming language, initially developed at the University of Southern California, and later moved to SourceForge.

sensors are envisioned to be at the center of distributed collaborative computing services involving time-critical decision support. sensors are small devices with limited communication and computational capabilities that collect data on their neighboring physical world and send the data periodically to server machines. sensors form a collaborative network with these servers, where the sensors gather information and the servers perform various operations (e.g. filter, aggregate, join etc) on the information streams in real-time according to predefined queries or rules. sensor data streams are continuous, un-ending and have highly volatile characteristics. As a result, traditional database systems are inappropriate for handling queries for sensor streams, and several stream data management systems have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we focus on a special type of query, namely join queries, which is the most expensive query operator. Here, we address the problem of finding an optimal join tree that maximizes throughput for sliding window based multi-join queries over continuous sensor data streams. We present a polynomial time algorithm Fodp and three variants of Fodp. Our experiments in ARES(1). show that for almost all instances, trees from Fodp and its variants perform close to the optimal trees from our exponential time algorithm OptDP [1], and significantly better than existing XJoin based heuristic algorithms.

Agent systems and multi-agent systems are a new and robust paradigm for designing flexible architectures for systems with disparate needs. Conceptually speaking, an agent is an entity that acts in the place of another, with their authority, in order to bring about a desired result. Thus agents are entities that are capable of carrying out goals either alone or as a part of a larger community in which these agents work together to meet goals. Agents provide a certain level of abstraction for achieving goals in a system, thereby potentially simplifying the design of a complex system. Agents are gaining popularity because of their flexibility, modularity, and their general applicability especially in the field of distributed computing. Distributed sensor networks are being increasingly used in a number of application domains as they offer advantages of reliability, accuracy, cost effectiveness, flexibility, and ease of deployment. But distributed sensor networks also face some unique challenges due to ad-hoc deployment, unattended operation, dynamic changes, and power constraints. For an underwater distributed sensor network application, efficient sensing, data fusion, target tracking and power management are some of the factors that have to be considered. Simulation is used for developing and testing alternative algorithms, considering tradeoffs, and evaluating the ability of the distributed system to achieve its objectives when presented with a set of operational challenges. These simulations will allow design alternatives to be explored, expose trade-offs, provide insight into the parameters that impact overall system performance, and facilitate the identification of requirements for further development. This paper describes a framework for using agents for multiple objective optimization in distributed sensor networks. A modular framework based on object oriented design is developed, which will facilitate the use of different agent based systems in simulations for

This paper presents a compact Millimeter Wave (MMW) radar unit that has been developed to be used as a Range, Bearing and Elevation (RBE) sensor on the Brumby Mk III Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV). The Brumby MkIII is the flight platform used in the Autonomous Navigation and Sensing Experimental Research (ANSER) project which is focused on the development and demonstration of the Decentralised Data fusion (DDF) and Simultaneous Localisation and Map Building (SLAM) algorithms on multiple UAVs. In the airborne DDF and SLAM demonstrations with UAVs, it is essential to have a terrain sensor on board for the RBE measurements of the ground targets. The focus of this paper is the hardware and software components of the MMW radar as an RBE sensor in the context of the ANSER project.
