There is a strong belief that the improvement of preventive safety applications and the extension of their operative range are achieved by the deployment of multiple sensors with wide fields of view (FOV). The paper contributes to the solution of the problem and introduces distributed sensor data fusion architectures and algorithms for an efficient deployment of multiple sensors that give redundant or complementary information for the moving objects. The proposed fusion architecture is based on a modular approach allowing exchangeability and benchmarking using the output of individual trackers, whereas the fusion algorithm gives a solution to the track management problem and the coverage of wide perception areas. The test case is LATERAL SAFE sensor configuration, which monitors the rear and lateral areas of the vehicle. Results show that with the given approach the system is able to maintain the ID of all objects in transition (an object enters a sensor's FOV) and blind areas (no sensor coverage)

The use of sensors in environment monitoring and other applications is increasing every day. In order to improve the reliability and the integrity of the data acquired from the environments, the use of more than one sensor is frequent. The combination process of data or information provided from multiple sensors of the same nature and also of different nature is called sensor fusion. This paper describe an Internet based monitoring system that implements signal-level sensor fusion algorithms that increase the quality of the sensor data that can be used to make simple decisions. An analysis of known signal-level fusion algorithms of data of the same nature is also performed

For many applications of radar and sensor based filtering, simulations can not represent the sole estimate of performance, provide points where threats become engagable, or determine when to use weapons' platform based sensors effectively in an engagement, etc... No significant advances have been proposed to analytically characterize performance or at least bound performance of the Kalman filter other than the use of simple two or three state constant gain filters. This paper suggests methods for characterizing filter algorithms that can be used to bound the advanced tracking algorithms that are used in a single sensor or multi-sensor environment

Emerging applications in sensor systems and network-wide IP traffic analysis present many technical challenges. They need distributed monitoring and continuous tracking of events. They have severe resource constraints not only at each site in terms of per-update processing time and archival space for high-speed streams of observations, but also crucially, communication constraints for collaborating on the monitoring task. These elements have been addressed in a series of recent works. A fundamental issue that arises is that one cannot make the "uniqueness" assumption on observed events which is present in previous works, since widescale monitoring invariably encounters the same events at different points. For example, within the network of an Internet Service Provider packets of the same flow will be observed in different routers;similarly, the same individual will be observed by multiple mobile sensors in monitoring wild animals. Aggregates of interest on such distributed environments must be resilient to duplicate observations. We study such duplicate-resilient aggregates that measure the extent of the duplication - how many unique observations are there, how many observations are unique - as well as standard holistic aggregates such as quantiles and heavy hitters over the unique items. We present accuracy guaranteed, highly communication-efficient algorithms for these aggregates that work within the time and space constraints of high speed streams. We also present results of a detailed experimental study on both real-life and synthetic data. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, computational aspects of the panel aggregation problem are addressed. Motivated primarily by applications of risk assessment, an algorithm is developed for fusing large corpora of internally incoherent probability assessments. The algorithm is characterized by a provable performance guarantee, and is demonstrated to be orders of magnitude faster than existing tools when tested on several real-world data-sets. In addition, unexpected connections between research in risk assessment and wireless sensor networks are exposed, as several key ideas are illustrated to be useful in both fields

This paper describes an architecture dedicated to the realtime processing of census correlation in the context of the realization of passive stereovision sensors. Although DSP circuits have dramatically increased their performances in terms of frequency (about 600 MHz today), DSP cores (several Multipliers Accumulators) and pipelines (Super Harvard architectures for example), FPGA circuits remain the best way to design massive parallel architectures when ultra fast algorithms computation are needed like it is the case in real time vision systems for collision avoidance.

We study the topology of sensor networks. With parallel architectures, the design is trivial - sensors forward their local decisions to a global fusion center. With web architectures, sensors communicate only with 'neighbors' and evolve their local decisions to reach a 'consensus.' In practice, it is important to reach a consensus with minimal communications and processing cost. The convergence rate of the consensus algorithm depends on 1) the weights assigned to the network links; and 2) the connectivity pattern of the network. We apply concepts from small world networks to design the topology and the weights when the local decisions are quantized and study the impact on network performance when we trade number of links for number of bits per decision

Wireless sensor networks, by providing an unprecedented way of interacting with the physical environment, have become a hot topic for research over the last few years. As with any new technology, results from real experimentations using these networks are still scarce, as real deployments are either costly, or still unfeasible in the current state of technology. There is therefore an increasing need for simulation tools allowing the testing of different architectures, communication protocols or information processing algorithms in sensor networks. In this paper, we investigate a simulation framework for the testing of data processing in wireless sensor network applications. In a first stage, data is generated using partial differential equations, allowing the modeling of a large panel of physical phenomena. In a second stage, sensing unit operating system and network constraints are simulated using an instance of a versatile simulator to account for the platform characteristics. Insights provided by the proposed simulation frame are illustrated by a set of experiments on a heat source detection task.

Due to recent advances in computation power, particle filtering has become a very promising tool for nonlinear non- Gaussian tracking applications. In this paper, a new framework for target tracking in a wireless sensor network using particle filtering is proposed. Under this framework, the imperfect nature of the communication channels between sensors and the fusion center is taken into account, and the channel information as well as inherent limitations of wireless sensors are incorporated in the tracking algorithm based on particle filters. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithm.

This paper describes the first results of applying a multi-sensor multi-hypothesis tracker, called M 6 T, to simulated and experimental sonar data sets. The simulated data have been generated in the context of the Multistatic Tracking Working Group (MSTWG). For a number of cases (number of sensors and number of input false contacts) we evaluate a set of metrics that describes the tracker performance. This set allows to compare different tracking algorithms
