A novel approach to depth map calibration by fusing localization data from wireless sensor networks with depth maps obtained through stereopsis is presented. In experiments, "smart" MICA2 wireless sensors from Crossbow Inc., and a Canon PowerShot SD100 digital camera are used. sensor locations are determined via an acoustic time-of-flight ranging technique, and the uncalibrated depth map is computed using a binocular stereopsis technique. The fusion is performed (a) by fitting a 3-D surface to a set of a priori known co-planar sensor locations, and (b) by computing the depth map calibration model parameters through minimizing the squared distance between the sensor-defined plane and the corresponding depth map measurements. algorithms for stereopsis, sensor localization, and depth map and sensor location fusion are presented. Calibration results along with error analysis follows. A summary of challenges with respect to automation, computational requirements, and obtained accuracy of depth estimation conclude the paper.

Image fusion as a way of combining multiple image signals into a single fused image has in recent years been extensively researched for a variety of multisensor applications. Choosing an optimal fusion approach for each application from the plethora of algorithms available however, remains a largely open issue. A small number of metrics proposed so far provide only a rough, numerical estimate of fusion performance with limited understanding of the relative merits of different fusion schemes. This paper proposes a method for comprehensive, objective, image fusion performance characterisation using a fusion evaluation framework based on gradient information representation. The method provides an in-depth analysis of fusion performance by quantifying: information contributions by each sensor, fusion gain, fusion information loss and fusion artifacts (artificial information created). It is demonstrated on the evaluation of an extensive dataset of multisensor images fused with a wide range of established image fusion algorithms. The results demonstrate and quantify a number of well known issues concerning the performance of these schemes and provide a useful insight into a number of more subtle yet important fusion performance effects not immediately accessible to an observer

Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) cart provide accurate contour measurement in the micron range and short measurement times far below one second. An advantage of this method is that illumination axis and observation axis can be identical in contrast to e.g. triangulation. Therefore ESPI represents an interesting alternative to other optical measurement principles used for surface profiling. Typical surfaces in industrial applications often show discontinuities, like steps or holes. An unambiguous measurement of such surfaces is only possible if the synthetic wavelength is chosen larger than the largest surface step. Since the noise level introduced to the measurement increases proportional to the synthetic wavelength, unambiguous measurements suffer from a loss of accuracy. The solution for this problem is the combination of two or more synthetic wavelengths. In contrast to other publications (hierarchical., pixel-wise approach or temporal phase unwrapping) our novel area-based approach uses only two synthetic wavelengths minimizing measurement time and device complexity. The use of areas instead of pixels allows a lower signal to noise ratio and a smaller number of synthetic wavelengths (in our case only two) respectively, compared to the hierarchical pixel based approach. In this paper we present the steps required during pre-processing (laser tilt and wave front compensation) and the opportunities and drawbacks of different algorithms used for the fusion of the two images gained from different synthetic wavelengths.

Image fusion is finding increasing application in areas such as medical imaging, remote sensing or military surveillance using sensor networks. Many of these applications demand highly compressed data combined with error resilient coding due to the characteristics of the communication channel. In this respect, JPEG2000 has many advantages over previous image coding standards. This paper evaluates and compares quality metrics for lossy compression using JPEG2000. Three representative image fusion algorithms: simple averaging, contrast pyramid and dual-tree complex wavelet transform based fusion have been considered. Numerous infrared and visible test images have been used. We compare these results with a psychophysical study where participants were asked to perform specific tasks and assess image fusion quality. The results show that there is a correlation between most of the metrics and the psychophysical evaluation. They also indicate that selection of the correct fusion method has more impact on performance than the presence of compression.

sensor networks are increasingly being used for applications which require fast processing of data, such as multimedia processing. Distributed computing can be used on a sensor network to reduce the completion time of a task and distribute the energy consumption equitably across all sensors. The distribution of task modules to sensors should consider not only the time and energy savings, but must also improve reliability of the entire task execution. We formulate the above as an optimization problem, and use the A* algorithm with improvements to determine an optimal static allocation of modules among a set of sensors. We also suggest a faster but suboptimal algorithm, called the greedy A* algorithm. Both algorithms have been simulated, and the results have been compared in terms of energy savings, decrease in completion time of the task, and the deviation of the sub-optimal solution from the optimal one. The sub-optimal solution required 8-35% less computation, at the cost of 2.5-15% deviation from the optimal solution in terms of average energy spent per sensor node. Both the A* and greedy A* algorithms have been shown to distribute energy consumption more uniformly across sensors than centralized execution. The greedy A* algorithm is found to be scalable, as the number of evaluations in determining the allocation increases linearly with the number of sensors. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

We study distributed detection in a sensor network where the sensors cooperate by exchanging information to reach a common understanding about the environment. We address two main issues: (1) distributed fusion: how to achieve a global decision without transmitting the information (measurements or local decisions) from all the sensors to a common central location like in parallel architectures; and (2) connectivity graph: what should be the connectivity pattern among the sensors, in other words, with which sensors should each sensor communicate. This is a nontrivial question since it corresponds to designing the structure of a graph to achieve a given goal. For the first issue, we propose an iterative algorithm that fuses the data globally without the need for collecting them at one central location. For the second issue, we present a design methodology based on "small world" network engines that leads to connectivity patterns that provide fast convergence to the distributed detection algorithm. Results show that introducing 10% to 30% randomness in the connectivity graph leads to significant improvements over both regular patterns and totally random networks

In modern automotive safety applications, the use of radar technology seems to be a promising technique. Vehicles equipped with on board radar sensors aim at detecting moving or stationary objects in the sensor's field of view and identifying critical collision situations. Thus, reliable tracking is of crucial importance for efficiency improvement in such systems. The presence of non linearities in measurement space is quite common in these architectures, i.e. the existence of radial velocity measurements in absence of lateral velocity ones generates a non-linear measurement model. In this paper, filtering techniques for the solution of this problem are tested, including Kalman filter and particle filters solutions. The test set of this study is consisted of a simulated highway scenario and the efficiency of filtering in position estimation; velocity estimation and time delay is checked.

In many applications of pattern recognition and automated identification, it is not uncommon for data obtained from different sensors monitoring a physical phenomenon to provide complimentary information. In such applications, data fusion-a suitable combination of the complimentary information-can offer more insight into the phenomenon than any of the individual data sources. We have previously introduced Learn/sup ++/, an ensemble based approach, as an effective automated classification algorithm that is capable of learning incrementally. Recognizing the conceptual similarity between data fusion and incremental learning, our approach is then to employ an ensemble of classifiers generated by using all of the data sources available, and strategically combine their outputs. We have observed that the prediction ability of such a system was significantly and consistently better than that of a decision based on a single data source across several benchmark and real world databases.

Local operating networks (LonWorks) is a widely used industrial technology applied to distributed control, sensor, and actuator networks. LonWorks is based on ANSI/EIA standard 709.1, and uses the predictive p-persistent CSMA algorithm in the MAC sublayer for collision resolution and decentralized traffic control. In spite of its popularity, only a few design tools are available to simulate LonWorks architectures and predict their performance. In this paper, we describe a simulation model for the collision resolution algorithm of LonWorks, based on the OPNET modeler. We present the design framework, and develop a state variable representation and state transition diagrams that allow accurate simulation of performance and prediction of the algorithm's behavior. To validate our model, we compared its predictions to measurements from a physical LonWorks testbed and a Markov chain analytical model, and demonstrated a high level of agreement

This paper describes six functional extensions to the oneSAF testbed baseline (OTB) modeling and simulation environment: (1) the addition of modules to access OTB's terrain database, (2) a supervised, on-line "batch-mode" interface to OTB for running experiments, (3) the addition of virtual reality (VR) agent proxies for integration with a low-cost, off-the-shelf VR engine, (4) a two-way OTB-agent bridge for the real-time query and control of OTB entities, (5) an unsupervised, off-line "batch-mode" interface for automatically loading, generating, reconfiguring, and executing experiments, and (6) the addition of new sensor model entities. These extensions enable the integration with OTB of C2 and multi-level information fusion algorithms that would not normally integrate with its event-based modeling and simulation engine. This paper describes the system architecture of the testbed and some of the research applications that demonstrate its use.
