This year marks the third edition of EuroSSC. It builds on the success of the past editions, held in Enschede, The Netherlands in 2006, and in Kendal, UK in 2007. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to EuroSSC 2008, in Zurich, Switerland. This volume contains the invited papers and technical peer-reviewed papers selected for presentation at the conference. At EuroSSC we aim to explore technologies, algorithms, architectures, p- tocols, and user aspects underlying context-aware smart surroundings, coop- ating intelligent objects, and their applications. Since its inception, EuroSSC has taken a complementary technology-driven and user-driven view to discuss these aspects. It is one of the particularities of EuroSSC, and the 2008 edition made no exception. In addition we emphasized aspects related to quality of c- text and context-aware feedback by actuator systems. This re?ects the growing importance that context processing in uncertain environments and sensor and actuator networks take in ambient intelligence environments. We received 70 paper submissions. They originate from 30 countries of - rope, the Middle East and Africa (66%), Asia (22%), North America (9%), and South America (3%). These numbers re?ect the European origins of EuroSSC, but also show that EuroSSC is a recognized and attractive platform for parti- pants from all regions of the world.

Autonomous driving represents a significant advancement in the transportation industry, enhancing vehicle intelligence, optimizing traffic management, and improving user experiences. Central to these innovations is deep learning, which enables systems to handle complex data and make informed decisions. Our survey explores critical applications of deep learning in autonomous driving, such as perception and detection, localization and mapping, and decision-making and control. We investigate specialized deep learning techniques, including convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, self-attention transformers, and their variants, among others. These methods are applied within various learning paradigms—supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning—to suit the specific needs of autonomous driving. Our analysis evaluates the effectiveness, benefits, and limitations of these technologies, focusing on their integration with other intelligent algorithms to enhance system performance. Furthermore, we examine the architectures of autonomous systems, analyzing how knowledge and information are organized from modular, pipeline-based frameworks to comprehensive end-to-end models. By presenting an exhaustive overview of the progressing domain of autonomous driving and bridging various research areas, our survey aims to synthesize diverse research threads into a unified narrative. This effort not only aims to enhance our understanding but also pushes the boundaries of what is achievable in this interdisciplinary field.

Context-awareness is one of the drivers of the ubiquitous computing paradigm. Well-designed context modeling and context retrieval approaches are key p- requisites in any context-aware system. Location is one of the primary aspects of all major context models — together with time, identity and activity. From the technical side, sensing, fusing and distributing location and other context information is as important as providing context-awareness to applications and services in pervasive systems. Thematerialsummarizedinthisvolumewasselectedforthe1stInternational Workshop on Location- and Context-Awareness (LoCA 2005) held in coope- tion with the 3rd International conference on Pervasive Computing 2005. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Communications and Navigation of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfa?enhofen, and the Mobile and Distributed Systems Group of the University of Munich. During the workshop, novel positioning algorithms and location sensing te- niques were discussed, comprising not only enhancements of singular systems, like positioning in GSM or WLAN, but also hybrid technologies, such as the integration of global satellite systems with inertial positioning. Furthermore, - provements in sensor technology, as well as the integration and fusion of sensors, were addressed both on a theoretical and on an implementation level. Personal and con?dential data, such as location data of users, have p- found implications for personal information privacy. Thus privacy protection, privacy-oriented location-aware systems, and how privacy a?ects the feasibility and usefulness of systems were also addressed in the workshop.
