Nowadays, wireless sensor networks (WSN) play a crucial role in various fields such as the army, health, the environment, and so on. These new sensors have limitations, which must be taken into consideration when deploying a WSN network, especially their strictly limited energy. Thus, in order to efficiently use the energy of these nodes to improve and increase the lifetime of the entire network, several self-organization algorithms have been proposed to create different network architectures based on required applications. In this article, we will study and examine the various WSN-based self-organization algorithms, highlighting their principles in order to compare them according to different metrics and on multiple requirements such as load balancing, energy efficiency, complexity of the algorithm... etc. To perform this multi-criteria comparison, we will use the ROC (Rank Order Centroid) multicriteria analysis method, to make the decision when designing and implementing a new efficient and effective self-organization algorithm that will meet all metrics and to all criteria.

Remote isolated applications such as agricultural monitoring, corrosion monitoring, condition monitoring etc., needs static infrastructure to be deployed and is spread across a large geographical area to transfer the data from source to gateway. These scenarios consume more power of battery powered devices and need huge infrastructure and maintenance cost. Use of mobile sinks is one good solution for such application to reduce power consumption, infrastructure and maintenance costs. However, the mobile sinks based architectures presented in the literature are not energy efficient and possess with more packet loss. To address this issue, this paper proposes a network architecture that uses an embedded database in selected cluster head nodes and mobile sink along with preconfigured route for the mobile sink. This improves network lifetime, packet reception rate and reduces power consumption of mobile sink. The proposed architecture is practically implemented and verified with IITH mote.

Many Human Activity Recognition (HAR) research works have been engineered, however, only a few studies combine Kinect and the smartphone. Also, most findings are geared towards wearable sensors, which however may develop wearer discomfort, predominantly for nonstop action applications where one may perhaps have to wear for a lengthy period. Additionally, while the novelties of these researches are encouraging, accuracy is subject to fluctuation over time. To address these concerns, this paper reports the fusion of sensor data to determine a robust accuracy. The system uses Microsoft Kinect sensor (MKS) to detect angle change in the hip-knee-ankle and a gravitational accelerometer of a smartphone for step tracking while engaging users. In our study, three methods are compared: 1) Manually counted steps, 2) raw data from our algorithm and 3) implementation of parameterized classification algorithm classifiers, k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) to improve the step counts. Best-first search hierarchy containing the maximum distance of the kNN algorithm is engaged. Varying k, an accuracy rate of 96.44% is achieved with σ = 0.040.

With more sensors embedded and functions added, mobile phones tend to be more critical to daily life. Researchers have been using the sensor data to recognize human activity these days; meanwhile, the mobile application usage prediction is also gradually brought into the spotlight. In this paper, we leveraged a state-of-the-art technique, which is LSTM, to model the mobile application usage data, also introduced a data fusion technique that eventually accomplished an over 90% of prediction accuracy. To validate the generality of our proposed solution, we applied the model on a public dataset. Our proposed solution treated the mobile application usage as a time series problem which is novel in the related field; it has the advantages of low resource consumption, short training time, as well as a generality. With the growth of users' reliance on mobile phones, mobile application usage prediction will be more useful in the future.

This paper describes the deployment of the Mobile Opportunistic Disconnection-Tolerant Networks and Systems platform in heterogeneous real-world scenarios. Our aim is to prototype and test fully-distributed multi-layer complex DTN forwarding and processing algorithms in different real-time dynamic topologies with varying mobility, network resources and data workload (publish-subscribe) patterns. In this work, we describe two different real-world contexts of mobile heterogeneous sensing and query in disconnection-prone environments: 1) networked drones and vehicles for agricultural monitoring applications and 2) vehicles and drone communications for smart city applications in urban environments. We discuss the performance characteristics of different mobile disconnection prone communication protocols and dynamic architectures across a range of criteria.

Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) applications for ocean monitoring, deep sea surveillance, and locating natural resources are gaining popularity. To monitor the underwater environment or any object of interest, these applications are required to deploy underwater connected node sensors for obtaining useful data. For thriving UWSNs, it is essential that an efficient and secure node deployment mechanism is in place. In this article, we are presenting a novel nodes deployment scheme which is based on evidence theory approach and cater-for 3D-UWSNs. This scheme implements sonar probability perception and an enhanced data fusion model to improve prior probability deployment algorithm of D-S evidence theory. The viability of our algorithm is verified by performing multiple simulation experiments. The simulation results reveal that as compared to other schemes, our algorithm deploys fewer nodes with enhanced network judgment criteria and expanded detection capabilities for a relatively large area. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

Underwater wireless sensor networks nodes deployment optimization problem is studied and underwater wireless sensor nodes deployment determines its capability and lifetime. If no underwater wireless sensor node is available in the monitoring area of underwater wireless sensor networks due to used up energy or any other reasons, the monitoring area where is not detected by any underwater wireless sensor node forms coverage holes. In order to improve the coverage of the underwater wireless sensor networks and prolong the lifetime of the underwater wireless sensor networks, based on the perception model, establish nodes detection model, combining with the data fusion. Because the underwater wireless sensor networks nodes coverage holes appear when the initial randomly deployment, a nodes deployment algorithm based on perception model of underwater wireless sensor networks is designed in this article. The simulation results show that this algorithm can effectively reduce the number of deployment underwater wireless sensor networks nodes, improve the efficiency of underwater wireless sensor networks coverage, reduce the underwater wireless sensor networks nodes energy consumption, prolong the lifetime of the underwater wireless sensor networks. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

In this paper, we address the problem of system theoretic dynamic information fusion in time-varying heterogeneous sensor networks. This class of sensor networks involves nodes that receive observations from a process of interest (active nodes) and nodes that do not receive any information (passive nodes), where the active and passive node roles can be varying with respect to time. At any given time, in addition, active nodes are allowed to have nonidentical modalities such that they can observe different measurements from the process. Specifically, we propose a new distributed input and state "coestimation" architecture for time-varying heterogeneous sensor networks, where time evolution of input and state updates of each node both depend on the local input and state information exchanges. The stability and performance of the overall sensor network are guaranteed once the local sufficient stability conditions for each node are satisfied. As compared with our recent distributed input and state "estimation" approach for the same problem, where time evolution of input (respectively, state) update of each node only depends on the local input (respectively, state) information exchange, our illustrative numerical example also demonstrates a substantially improved dynamic input and state fusion performance.

Location information for events, assets, and individuals, mostly focusing on two dimensions so far, has triggered a multitude of applications across different verticals, such as consumer, networking, industrial, health care, public safety, and emergency response use cases. To fully exploit the potential of location awareness and enable new advanced location-based services, localization algorithms need to be combined with complementary technologies including accurate height estimation, i.e., three dimensional location, reliable user mobility classification, and efficient indoor mapping solutions. This survey provides a comprehensive review of such enabling technologies. In particular, we present cellular localization systems including recent results on 5G localization, and solutions based on wireless local area networks, highlighting those that are capable of computing 3D location in multi-floor indoor environments. We overview range-free localization schemes, which have been traditionally explored in wireless sensor networks and are nowadays gaining attention for several envisioned Internet of Things applications. We also present user mobility estimation techniques, particularly those applicable in cellular networks, that can improve localization and tracking accuracy. Regarding the mapping of physical space inside buildings for aiding tracking and navigation applications, we study recent advances and focus on smartphone-based indoor simultaneous localization and mapping approaches. The survey concludes with service availability and system scalability considerations, as well as security and privacy concerns in location architectures, discusses the technology roadmap, and identifies future research directions.

This paper researches robust data fusion, descriptive reality and control solutions. Cognitive autonomy, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-ground communication, as well as wireless hybrid mobile mesh networks are considered. In dynamic and contested environments, the nodes and autonomous swarms must transmit and assess states, evaluate shared data, adapt to dynamic countermeasures, reconfigure, and, ensure secure communication. Robust algorithms and protocols must accomplish data management, perform vulnerability analysis, support data trustworthiness assessment, support physical-virtual reality, and evaluate functionality. Reliability of information sources and communication should be guaranteed despite adversary electronic warfare and disruptive actions. We examine science and technology of communication and data management in distributed processing, control and autonomy applications typifying adversarial environments. Our results ensure sufficient throughput, low latency, robustness, connectivity and secure communication. Topics on target recognition, object classification and dynamic tracking are researched with experimental substantiations.
