Falls are the major cause of accidents in the elderly population. Propelled by their non-intrusive sensing capabilities and robustness to heat and lighting conditions, radar-based automated fall detection systems have emerged as a candidate technology for reliable fall detection in assisted living. The use of a multiple radar system, in lieu of a single radar unit, for indoor monitoring combats occlusion and supported by the fact that motion articulations in the directions away from the line of sight generate weak Doppler signatures that are difficult to detect and classify. fusion of the data from two radars is deemed to improve performance and reduce false alarms. Utilizing two 24 GHz ultra-wide band (UWB) radar sensing systems, we present different fusionarchitectures and sensor selection methods, demonstrating the merits of two-sensor platform for indoor motion monitoring and elderly care applications.

This paper presents a study on the feasibility of an interface based on a mechanomyographic signal (MMG). Existing state-of-the-art studies show attempts of utilisation of MMG signal for gesture recognition where the sensors' location is strictly defined with respect to muscle position. A test setup consisting of 5 IMU sensors arranged in a band form was used. The classifier for 5 gestures (fist, pronation, supination, flexion, extension) and idle state was implemented by using a feed forward neural network with softmax output. The feature vector consists of 18 features: 5 representing muscle activity (RMS) and 13 parameters corresponding to relative sensor orientation, being indicators of local skin surface deformation evoked by muscle shortening. It was shown that taking relative sensor orientation into consideration, was a crucial factor for improvement of classification performance and position invariance. The interface was tested on three subjects, in three distinct orientations. The results showed that average performance represented by F-1 score was 94 +/- 6%.

In this paper, one of the multi sensorfusion techniques, namely Federated Kalman Filter (FKF) performance is studied for Indoor Positioning problem. Kalman Filters having centralized and decentralized structures are widely used for outdoor positioning and navigation applications. Besides them, indoor positioning received large interest in recent years. In this study, decentralized FKF is applied in indoor positioning problem by taking its outdoor navigation performance into consideration. Simulations are done using distance measurements assumed to be priorly calculated. Results gathered via simulations are evaluated to be promising for future studies.

The amount of smart devices in our daily lives has dramatically increased. Many of these devices include sensors to capture their environment and communicate with other devices, forming the internet of things (IoT). A similar process of increasing intercommunication and digitization can be seen in industry where this development is called Industry 4.0. In this new era there is a strong demand for new computing architectures that fulfill the tight energy constraints as well as deliver enough on-chip processing performance. Off-the-shelf microcontrollers do not suffice both requirements as the power to performance ratio is too high. One solution are system on chip (SoC) architectures with domain specific application specific processors (ASIP). However, this new and competitive market requires a strongly reduced time to market. Thus, it is necessary to speed up the design process and deliver enough flexibility to adapt to new applications. Therefore, we propose a new SoC generation framework, which is based on an ASIP architecture. Architectural templates can be combined with existing intellectual property (IP) components, high-level synthesis (HLS) or hardware description language (HDL) code to speed up the design process. Both field programmable gate array (FPGA) and application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) back ends are supported. The architecture targets primarily multi-sensor and sensorfusionapplications. A customizable MIPS processor with an adaptable compiler toolchain ensures interoperability in standard networks. The capabilities of our SoC architecture is demonstrated on two real world problems, including a performance demanding power quality monitoring application and a low-power swimming exercise tracking applications. Results show that the application constraints can be easily fulfilled while increasing speed and flexibility in the design process.

Assessment of a surface quality being an essential task for the authorities supervising the roads provides the subject of the paper. Information about riding quality of a pavement, important for drivers, both in terms of their comfort and safety is collected during experiments employing mobile sensors. The paper describes the use of a miniature position and acceleration sensor for evaluation of the roughness of the road surface. The device designed for the installation in vehicles includes a built-in multi-axis accelerometer and a GPS receiver. Measurement data were collected on the basis of road trip records with regards to diversified roughness of the surface and to varied vehicle speed on each investigated road section. Data were gathered for various vehicle body types and then attempts were made to the classification of the road surface based on the created algorithm.
