The on-board compression of remote sensed hyperspectral images is an important task nowadays. One of the main difficulties is that the compression of these images must be performed in the satellite which carries the hyperspectral sensor. Hence, this process must be performed by space qualified hardware, having area, power and speed limitations. Moreover, it is important to achieve high compression ratios without compromising the quality of the decompress image. In this manuscript we proposed a new methodology for compressing hyperspectral images based on hyperspectral image fusion concepts. The proposed compression process has two independent steps. The first one is to spatially degrade the remote sensed hyperspectral image to obtain a low resolution hyperspectral image. The second step is to spectrally degrade the remote sensed hyperspectral image to obtain a high resolution multispectral image. These two degraded images are then send to the earth surface, where they must be fused using a fusion algorithm for hyperspectral and multispectral image, in order to recover the remote sensed hyperspectral image. The main advantage of the proposed methodology for compressing remote sensed hyperspectral images is that the compression process, which must be performed on-board, becomes very simple, being the fusion process used to reconstruct image the more complex one. An extra advantage is that the compression ratio can be fixed in advanced. Many simulations have been performed using different fusion algorithms and different methodologies for degrading the hyperspectral image. The results obtained in the simulations performed corroborate the benefits of the proposed methodology.

Radiation source detection using a network of detectors is an active field of research for homeland security and defense applications. We propose Source-attractor Radiation Detection (SRD) method to aggregate measurements from a network of detectors for radiation source detection. SRD method models a potential radiation source as a "magnet"-like attractor that pulls in pre-computed virtual points from the detector locations. A detection decision is made if a sufficient level of attraction, quantified by the increase in the clustering of the shifted virtual points, is observed. Compared with traditional methods, SRD has the following advantages: i) it does not require an accurate estimate of the source location from limited and noise-corrupted sensor readings, unlike the localization-based methods, and ii) its virtual point shifting and clustering calculation involve simple arithmetic operations based on the number of detectors, avoiding the high computational complexity of grid-based likelihood estimation methods. We evaluate its detection performance using canonical datasets from Domestic Nuclear Detection Office's (DNDO) Intelligence Radiation sensors Systems (IRSS) tests. SRD achieves both lower false alarm rate and false negative rate compared to three existing algorithms for network source detection.

Electric arc welding is a complex task that demands a high degree of control in order to meet the international standards for fusion welding. We present a Vision-Based Measurement (VBM) system and evaluate how different conditions and algorithms impact the measuring of beveled edges. The proposed system integrates hardware and software to image the welding plates using a single CMOS camera as visual sensor, run computer vision algorithms on a FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) board, controls the robot movements and adjust the weld pattern and welder equipment parameters. A complete prototype, using a commercial linear welding robot is presented. The evaluation of the system as a groove mapping equipment, considering different processing algorithms combined with noise removal and line segment detection techniques, shows the potential of the approach for shop floor operation. © 2016 IEEE.

Throughout the Department of Defense (DoD), acquisition, platform integration, and life cycle costs for weapons systems have continued to rise. Although Open Architecture (OA) interface standards are one of the primary methods being used to reduce these costs, the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office (AFRCO) has extended the OA concept and chartered the Open Mission System (OMS) initiative with industry to develop and demonstrate a consensus-based, non-proprietary, OA standard for integrating subsystems and services into airborne platforms. The new OMS standard provides the capability to decouple vendor-specific sensors, payloads, and service implementations from platform-specific architectures and is still in the early stages of maturation and demonstration. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) -sensors Directorate has developed the Blue Guardian program to demonstrate advanced sensing technology utilizing open architectures in operationally relevant environments. Over the past year, Blue Guardian has developed a platform architecture using the Air Force's OMS reference architecture and conducted a ground and flight test program of multiple payload combinations. Systems tested included a vendor-unique variety of Full Motion Video (FMV) systems, a Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) system, a multi-mode radar system, processing and database functions, multiple decompression algorithms, multiple communications systems, and a suite of software tools. Initial results of the Blue Guardian program show the promise of OA to DoD acquisitions, especially for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) payload applications. Specifically, the OMS reference architecture was extremely useful in reducing the cost and time required for integrating new systems.

In this paper three ratio-based change detection algorithms, dual ratio (DR), multi-ratio (MR) and multi-ratio fusion (MRF), are tested with full motion video data collected from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. The dataset suffers from several practical issues that generally hinder change detection utility and performance: including image registration error, changes in perspective and significant illumination changes. The ratio-based approaches are compared to change detection methods from literature and are found to be more robust to these practical issues. MRF is found to be the top performing method exhibiting a 10% average performance advantage over the next best performing method across all false alarm regions. MRF also outperforms the next best performing method by 22% at low false alarms rates that are critical in many applications. © 2016 IEEE.

The development of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems based inertial sensors allows the implementation of a large number of commercial and scientific solutions for, health and sports monitoring, navigation systems and aeronautical/aerospace engineering applications. Inertial sensors widespread the so called embedded systems also prompted for the development of algorithms to cope with their inherent inaccuracy. These sensors, with small form factor and low cost, present an advantage for computing three-dimensional space object orientation. Also radio frequency communication devices are frequently associated with inertial sensor and embedded systems. Radio frequency communication protocols allow immediate data transfer and processing without cumbersome cabling. This work presents a survey of a number of relevant sensor fusion algorithms. The identified algorithms are implemented and its performance tested. Also a Yaskawa Motoman robotic arm is used to implement a set of predefined movements that granted the mandatory test accuracy and repeatability conditions. A Bluetooth Low Energy device has been implemented to transfer the inertial sensor data to a PC computer running a Windows operating system. The inertial sensors have been implemented with a MPU-9150 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that includes an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a compass.

We are interested in data fusion strategies for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Advances in theory, algorithms, and computational power have made it possible to extract rich semantic information from a wide variety of sensors, but these advances have raised new challenges in fusing the data. For example, in developing fusion algorithms for moving target identification (MTI) applications, what is the best way to combine image data having different temporal frequencies, and how should we introduce contextual information acquired from monitoring cell phones or from human intelligence? In addressing these questions we have found that existing data fusion models do not readily facilitate comparison of fusion algorithms performing such complex information extraction, so we developed a new model that does. Here, we present the Spatial, Temporal, Algorithm, and Cognition (STAC) model. STAC allows for describing the progression of multi-sensor raw data through increasing levels of abstraction, and provides a way to easily compare fusion strategies. It provides for unambiguous description of how multi-sensor data are combined, the computational algorithms being used, and how scene understanding is ultimately achieved. In this paper, we describe and illustrate the STAC model, and compare it to other existing models.

While many applications of sensor fusion suffer from the occurrence of outliers, a broad range of outlier robust graph optimization techniques has been developed for simultaneous localization and mapping. In this paper we investigate the performance of some of the most advanced algorithms for a simulated wireless localization setting affected by non-Gaussian errors. With this first analysis we can show some of the advantages and disadvantages that are connected with the different concepts behind Max-Mixture, Generalized iSAM, Switchable Constraints and Dynamic Covariance Scaling.
