New technologies in lighting enable the design of illumination systems that autonomously meet the needs of occupants. In recent years, lighting design for both commercial and residential spaces has advanced beyond task performance, to a broader range of occupant needs including economic, energy and environmental constraints, architectural integration, human health, productivity, interpersonal communication, and aesthetic quality. Such systems require distributed sensing and control systems with sensory feedback to detect the lighting conditions in the space. Occupancy sensing and activity recognition are core components of this distributed sensor-based control system, and multisensor fusion of integrated sensors is viewed as a key attribute. This paper describes an expanded view of multisensor technologies, signal processing and pattern recognition algorithms that are being developed and evaluated for occupancy detection and activity recognition. This paper presents a multisensor testbed system that incorporates a sparse array of time-of-flight range sensors with pattern recognition algorithms for geometric form and motion detection of human occupants. Three levels of analysis are implemented: (1) Occupant detection and tracking, (2) Occupant pose classification (sitting, standing, and walking), (3) Occupant activity sequence recognition. These algorithms are dependent on statistical training of human pose and motion and implemented with a Bayesian formulation for detection, classification, and recognition. Evaluation of resulting performance in the testbed conference room demonstrates pose and activity recognition accuracy of greater than 97% for single occupants.

This paper introduces the Better-than-the-Best fusion (BB-Fus) algorithm. The BB-Fus algorithm is a simple and effective information fusion algorithm that combines the information from different sources (be it sensors, features or classifiers) to improve the Correct Classification Rate (CCR). It can be observed that in most classification problems, different sensors or features might have different classification accuracies in separating different classes. Therefore, this paper constructs an optimal decision tree that isolates one class at a time with the best sensor to separate that particular class. The paper shows that the decision tree improves the overall CCR as compared to the use of any single sensor or feature for any 3-class classification problem. The efficiency of the BB-Fus algorithm is validated on the Opportunity data set to solve the human activity recognition problem where a set of 56 sensors (including a localization system, accelerometers, inertial measurement units and magnetic sensors mounted on various body parts;besides, accelerometers and gyroscopes mounted on different objects) are used. The CCR resulting from the BB-Fus algorithm is 96% while the best sensor achieved 94% CCR.

This paper presents image sensor data fusion strategy using factorized Kalman filter algorithm which has wide range of aerospace applications. This involves locating the target from the images obtained from the two sensors using Centroid tracking Factorized Kalman filter and then fusing the sensor data to get much better information of the target position and velocity. Factorized Kalman filter or UD filter (UDF) is used for predicting the upcoming position and other variables of the target. fusion is used to reduce the error that occurs due to clutters in image data taken from sensors. Performance of two fusion algorithms that is measurement or data level fusion and state vector fusion are carried out and good results are obtained regarding the position and velocity estimation of the target. Image sensor data fusion (ISDF) is realized using MATLAB tool. The sensor images are synthesized and added with different noise levels in order to represent sensor data obtained in the presence of different atmospheric clutter. Segmentation process and nearest neighbor technique is used to extract the target details from the sensor images.

We consider a parallel distributed decision fusion system consisting of a bank of local sensors and a fusion center. Each local sensor makes binary decisions based on its own observations. The decision is to accept one of the hypotheses, H 0 or H 1 . Each local sensor transmits its decisions to the fusion center over an error free channel. The fusion center combines all the local decisions to obtain a global decision. For observations that are statistically independent conditioned on the hypothesis and fixed local decisions, the Chair-Varshney fusion rule minimizes the global Bayesian risk. However, this fusion rule requires knowledge of local sensor performance parameters and the prior probabilities of the hypothesis set. In most applications, these are unavailable. Moreover, local sensor performance may be time varying. Several studies attempted on-line estimation of the unknown local performance metrics and prior probabilities. We develop a fusion rule that applies a genetic algorithm to fuse the local sensors' binary decisions. The rule adapts to time varying local sensor error characteristics and provides near-optimal performance at the expense of a larger number of observations and higher computational overhead.

The ultimate objective of this work is to improve characterization of the ice cover distribution in the polar areas, to improve sea ice mapping and to develop a new automated real-time high spatial resolution multi-sensor ice extent and ice edge product for use in operational applications. Despite a large number of currently available automated satellite-based sea ice extent datasets, analysts at the National Ice Center tend to rely on original satellite imagery (provided by satellite optical, passive microwave and active microwave sensors) mainly because the automated products derived from satellite optical data have gaps in the area coverage due to clouds and darkness, passive microwave products have poor spatial resolution, automated ice identifications based on radar data are not quite reliable due to a considerable difficulty in discriminating between the ice cover and rough ice-free ocean surface due to winds. We have developed a multi-sensor algorithm that first extracts maximum information on the sea ice cover from imaging instruments VIIRS and MODIS, including regions covered by thin, semitransparent clouds, then supplements the output by the microwave measurements and finally aggregates the results into a cloud gap free daily product. This ability to identify ice cover underneath thin clouds, which is usually masked out by traditional cloud detection algorithms, allows for expansion of the effective coverage of the sea ice maps and thus more accurate and detailed delineation of the ice edge. We have also developed a web-based monitoring system that allows comparison of our daily ice extent product with the several other independent operational daily products.

Robust multitarget, multisensor fusion algorithms rely on optimal or near-optimal assignment algorithms at their core. Greedy and semi-greedy search algorithms represent a fast and effective solution to multi-dimensional assignment problems, at the cost of often producing sub-optimal results in challenging cases. The Adaptive Semi-Greedy Search (ASGS) presented here is an improvement on older semi-greedy search methods, and is more likely to find the optimal solution without sacrificing computational speed. ASGS outperforms Semi Greedy Track Selection (SGTS) in a wide range of statistical tests, where it was consistently more likely to find the optimal solution to 6 dimensional assignment problems, as if the RMS measurement error had been reduced by 25%. The two algorithms are also compared in several challenging multitarget, multisensor tracking scenarios, including maneuvering formations and crossing targets, where a Multiple Hypothesis Tracker (MHT) using the ASGS significantly reduces the RMS position error of the tracks (p

In the last years the interest in multi-hop communications has gained momentum within the research community due to the challenging characteristics of the intra-vehicular radio environment and the stringent robustness imposed on critical sensors within the vehicle. As opposed to point-to-point network topologies, multi-hop networking allows for an enhanced communication reliability at the cost of an additional processing overhead. In this context this manuscript poses a novel bi-objective optimization problem aimed at jointly minimizing (1) the average Bit Error Rate (BER) of sensing nodes under a majority fusion rule at the central data collection unit;and (2) the mean delay experienced by packets forwarded by such nodes due to multi-hop networking, frequency channel switching time multiplexing at intermediate nodes. The formulated paradigm is shown to be computationally tractable via a combination of evolutionary meta-heuristic algorithms and Dandelion codes, the latter capable of representing tree-like structures like those modeling the multi-hop routing approach. Simulations are carried out for realistic values of intra-vehicular radio channels and co-channel interference due to nearby IEEE 802.11 signals. The obtained results are promising and pave the way towards assessing the practical performance of the proposed scheme in real setups.
