A challenging research issue, which has recently attracted a lot of attention, is the incorporation of emotion recognition technology in serious games applications, in order to improve the quality of interaction and enhance the gaming experience. To this end, in this paper, we present an emotion recognition methodology that utilizes information extracted from multimodal fusion analysis to identify the affective state of players during gameplay scenarios. More specifically, two monomodal classifiers have been designed for extracting affective state information based on facial expression and body motion analysis. For the combination of different modalities a deep model is proposed that is able to make a decision about player's affective state, while also being robust in the absence of one information cue. In order to evaluate the performance of our methodology, a bimodal database was created using Microsoft's Kinect sensor, containing feature vectors extracted from users' facial expressions and body gestures. The proposed method achieved higher recognition rate in comparison with mono-modal, as well as early-fusion algorithms. Our methodology outperforms all other classifiers, achieving an overall recognition rate of 98.3%.

In this paper three ratio-based change detection algorithms, dual ratio (DR), multi-ratio (MR) and multi-ratio fusion (MRF), are tested with full motion video data collected from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. The dataset suffers from several practical issues that generally hinder change detection utility and performance: including image registration error, changes in perspective and significant illumination changes. The ratio-based approaches are compared to change detection methods from literature and are found to be more robust to these practical issues. MRF is found to be the top performing method exhibiting a 10% average performance advantage over the next best performing method across all false alarm regions. MRF also outperforms the next best performing method by 22% at low false alarms rates that are critical in many applications.

Wireless sensor Networks is extensively used in many of applications related to different fields. Some of those applications deal with confidential and critical data that must be protected from unauthorized access. Some other systems use WSNs that are deployed in very harsh environments with limited energy resources. Those systems cannot tolerate network failures that can be caused by network intruders. In this paper, an efficient intrusion detection model is introduced. The model uses intelligent techniques to detect intrusions. Two different architectures are introduced. The first architecture represents the level of sensor node, sink node, and base station. The second architecture represents the levels of sensor and sink nodes. This work proposes two intrusion detection algorithms, one uses a supervised learning mechanism to be used on the level of the sensor node and the other uses an unsupervised learning mechanism to be used on the levels of both the sink node and base station. The output of the algorithms is a set of detection rules which are structured in the form of binary tree. The introduced algorithms provided a high detection accuracy using less number of selected features, compared to previous work for intrusion detection, which decreases the complexity and the processing time. The proposed learning algorithms used only 10% of the data for training. An enhancement for J48 classification algorithm is also introduced which decreases the size of the algorithm's decision tree and makes it suitable to be used for intrusion detection in WSNs.

The emergence of unmanned aerial vehicles for large scale monitoring of ground infrastructure has challenged new designs for electronic sensor systems capable of timely, accurate and computationally effective measurements. A conventional design issue is balancing the complexity of the sensing subsystem with advanced data processing algorithms in order to obtain quality information regarding the airplane's posture and orientation. The paper presents the generic architecture of the navigation sensing system for a fixed wing mini-UAV, at both the physical and algorithm levels. The focus is set on a sub-problem, namely altitude estimation by sensor fusion using barometric pressure and GPS data. Results are discussed based on actual flight log data and the approach is extended towards speed estimation: air, ground and wind influence. Conclusions are drawn regarding efficient implementation of the method in relation to the onboard embedded processing capabilities.

As one of fundamental issues in energy limited wireless sensor networks, the problem of minimizing the receiver interference of a wireless sensor network has been proved to be NP-hard, and effective algorithms need to be developed for practical applications. In this paper, a simple local search algorithm is proposed to tackle the problem. Beginning with a feasible solution generated randomly or yielded by a greedy method, the algorithm attempts to improve the initial solution by removing every node with maximum interference based on two simple strategies. Experimental results show that on random instances the algorithm effectively improves the solutions yielded by an existing greedy algorithm with time slightly longer than that of the greedy algorithm.

Hand gesture recognition is an important topic in the field of computer vision, it has a wide range of applications, such as interactive games and sign language recognition, etc.. With the launch of the depth sensor, the task of hand gesture recognition becomes more simple. In recent years, there are a number of methods to try to extract features in the depth image, which is to be an effective expression of some kind of gesture. However, due to the inherent flexibility and complexity of the gesture, the recognition performance of the existing algorithms on large data sets is still not satisfactory. Local shape is presented in this paper a novel method based on multi spatial feature fusion to recognize static hand gesture depth image, namely on the 3D point cloud which were the local principal component analysis. It extract the local gradient information and local points cloud depth distribution, the effective information coding the gesture, we put local features which are the concatenation of the gesture image features and the classification results of the random forest classifier of features are filtered to remove the result of classification which did not influence the characteristics. We adopt filtered features to train the random forest again to recognize gestures. Compared with the existing algorithms, this method can effectively improve the recognition rate of the two large gesture data sets.

Image fusion is used to integrate multiple images into a composite image, which contains complementary information from each of the source images. In defense applications, fusion is widely employed to obtain images pertaining to the object under surveillance and also for mapping terrain for navigation purposes. Surveillance imaging generally use two imaging sources, one an Infra Red (IR) camera and the other a conventional digital camera;and the images are usually captured under low-lighting and night time conditions. The imaging process is prone to sensor noise which degrades the fusion performance. This is because the noise is also considered as useful information by the fusion process, resulting in a corrupted fused output, rendering the image useless. We have formulated different fusion techniques based on the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). In this paper, the efficiency of these fusion algorithms is evaluated under the presence of sensor noise. The Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) are used as metrics to evaluate the performance of the fusion schemes. Our experiments have shown that the DWT based fusion method that utilizes the energy of the wavelet coefficients for fusion produces good results under the noise constraints imposed.

Orientation sensing is not a new concept. It is being used since ages however, with emergence of new technologies such as Wireless Body Area sensor Networks (WBASNs), it gives new challenges. Commencement of smart phones that have built in orientation sensors are replacing expensive and complex Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) designed for a specific purpose. Orientation sensing in WBASN have numerous applications. In e-health applications, rehabilitation investigation of backbone injuries can be measured by continues readings of posture. For that, gyroscopes and accelerometers are key sensors that play vital role. For machines such as robots and air crafts, such data fusion is in practice. However, considering human body movements yet there is a need to find an accurate fusion algorithm that meets all demands with low complexity. In this work, we discussed and compared two algorithms considering Wireless Body Area sensor fusion (WBASF) i.e. Kalman and Complementary data fusion techniques. According to our findings, Kalman Filter may have given very good results regarding machines however, Complementary filter proved itself better in performance, complexity and required computational power in WBASNs.

The objective of this thesis is to design efficient algorithms and architectures for enabling a Sensing as a Service paradigm in the recent era of Internet-of-things. With the widespread deployment of sensor architectures and sensor-enabled applications all around the globe, our planet today is witnessing an unprecedented instrumentation. The emerging paradigm of Sensing as a Service is replete with many open challenges, starting from systematic sensor deployment, regulated data collection, efficient data aggregation, scalable execution and proper participation. This dissertation aims to address some of these open challenges and attempts to carve a niche proposition by handling these problems from a purely algorithmic perspective. The objective is to examine each of the crucial pieces outlined above in the light of algorithmic design and come up with efficient mechanisms that are both practical and theoretically well-founded. The experiments are planned on real world data and hence, are expected to allow us to examine the efficacy of our proposals in a realistic setting.

Wireless sensors networks plays an important role for accurate monitoring for various applications such as military surveillance where exact monitoring is required. Critical issue with wireless sensor network is sensor node energy as energy utilization of sensor nodes increases the communication cost. This paper used effective N-DRINA routing algorithm which improves the data fusion and aggregation techniques to save energy efficiently. It also builds the effective routing tree, overlapping routes increases and eliminates the redundant data. This algorithm can compare to other algorithms like information-fusion-based-algorithm, minimum spanning-tree, shortest-path-tree. Our N-DRINA shows improved results along the use of energy-wake-up mechanism.
