In practice, a wireless sensor network normally includes a small portion of nodes with known locations, termed anchors, and the other nodes with unknown locations, termed sensors, have to be localized through dedicated algorithms. Since not every sensor is directly neighboring with anchors, sensor locations are determined in a multi-hop localization manner, and therein, localization errors of sensors display to rise up with their minimal hop count to anchors, which is termed error propagation. Grasping the rule of error propagation is critical to design and develop both localization algorithms as well as various applications. In this paper, we focus on quantitatively measuring how the localization errors vary across different sensors. To do so, regular 2-dimensional wireless sensor networks are taken into consideration, and formulae with respect to different sensors and different anchor placement are obtained. Simulation results are conducted to validate these formulae and analyze the characteristics of error propagation.

Accurate and precise estimation of orientation from low cost inertial measurement units (IMUs) is a challenge due to the influence of noises from the accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer. For practical applications, it would be useful to first quantify the expected error in estimated orientation for a known noise associated with a sensor so as to make an optimal selection of a sensor and fusion algorithm based on application requirement. There are a wide range of sensor fusion algorithms in literature to make these angular measurements from MEMS based IMUs. This paper proposes use of a simulation platform for comparative performance assessment of orientation algorithms for 9 axis IMUs in presence of internal noises and demonstrates with examples the benefits of the same. The simulated accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer signals in the IMU are perturbed with white Gaussian noise and bias instability. The effects of these noisy inputs on the orientation output of algorithms are calculated using MATLAB, under static as well as three types of dynamic motion profiles. The best choice of algorithm is determined by comparing the mean value and standard deviation of the shortest angle measure between the true orientation and estimated orientation from multiple simulations for each of the algorithms under evaluation. Among the four orientation algorithms compared here, the Mahony orientation algorithm produced good results for all simulations of static and dynamic motion profiles with an error less than 8° for the sensor modeled in simulation platform over the duration of the simulation. © 2018 IEEE.

Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) applications for ocean monitoring, deep sea surveillance, and locating natural resources are gaining popularity. To monitor the underwater environment or any object of interest, these applications are required to deploy underwater connected node sensors for obtaining useful data. For thriving UWSNs, it is essential that an efficient and secure node deployment mechanism is in place. In this article, we are presenting a novel nodes deployment scheme which is based on evidence theory approach and cater-for 3D-UWSNs. This scheme implements sonar probability perception and an enhanced data fusion model to improve prior probability deployment algorithm of D-S evidence theory. The viability of our algorithm is verified by performing multiple simulation experiments. The simulation results reveal that as compared to other schemes, our algorithm deploys fewer nodes with enhanced network judgment criteria and expanded detection capabilities for a relatively large area. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

Modern systems are starting to include a wide variety of sensors and camera systems for applications such as night vision, degraded vision, and other sensors. Systems that require multiple coordinated sensors (including sensor fusion) used for ISR, navigation in degraded environments, or infrared countermeasures are constantly trying to increase throughput to carry higher resolution images and video in real time. The need for ever higher throughput challenges system designers on every level, including the physical interface. Simply moving video efficiently from point to point or within a network is a challenge. ARINC 818, the Avionics Digital Video Bus, continues to expand into high-speed sensor applications because of its low latency, robustness, and high throughput capabilities.

Surveillance applications require reliable monitoring system architectures and cost-efficient in-network data processing mechanisms able to provide effective information extraction for event tracking. Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) appear to be the most suitable technology due to some well known benefits and the rapid development of embedded devices. Current research is mostly focused on improving and developing new decentralized sensor fusion schemes able to overcome the limitations introduced by the battery operated sensor nodes, but most of the time evaluating the proposed algorithms is performed with a serious lack of precise channel modeling. To close this gap, we provide a stochastic consensus implementation for lossy wireless networks comprising fixed and mobile sensor nodes, as a heterogeneous surveillance system based on ground sensor nodes and UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). We developed a simulation framework tailored for fixed and mobile sensor nodes and we are able to evaluate the performance of consensus algorithms from a comparative standpoint, considering deterministic and probabilistic packet propagation models described by common models such as Free Space and Nakagami models. In this paper, we consider a complex in-network adaptive estimation using the distributed least-mean square algorithm tailored for WSN. We perform a mean-square error (MSE) performance analysis for both deterministic and probabilistic propagation models.

Falls are the major cause of accidents in the elderly population. Propelled by their non-intrusive sensing capabilities and robustness to heat and lighting conditions, radar-based automated fall detection systems have emerged as a candidate technology for reliable fall detection in assisted living. The use of a multiple radar system, in lieu of a single radar unit, for indoor monitoring combats occlusion and supported by the fact that motion articulations in the directions away from the line of sight generate weak Doppler signatures that are difficult to detect and classify. fusion of the data from two radars is deemed to improve performance and reduce false alarms. Utilizing two 24 GHz ultra-wide band (UWB) radar sensing systems, we present different fusion architectures and sensor selection methods, demonstrating the merits of two-sensor platform for indoor motion monitoring and elderly care applications.

Machine learning techniques will take an increasingly central role in the distributed sensing realm and specifically in smart cities scenarios. Pervasive air quality monitoring as one of the primary city service requires a significant effort in term of data processing for extracting the needed semantic value. In this paper, after briefly reviewing the emerging relevant literature, we compare several machine learning tools for the purpose of devising intelligent calibration components to be run on board or in cloud computing architectures for pollutant concentration estimation. Two cities field experiments provide the needed on field recorded datasets to validate the approaches. Results are discussed both in terms of performance and computational impact for the specific application.

For multi-sensor data fusion applications the accurate alignment of different sensor data is essential for the proper combination of matching features. In food inspection system the boxing often is in a rectangular shape. This knowledge can be used to rectify the image data, an important step in the alignment stage. In case of low contrast between boxing and background, the detected contour may differ significantly from the actual values. In this paper the performance of the Hough transform and the RANdom SAmple Consensus (RANSAC)-algorithm are evaluated relating to the correct extraction of the boxing contour out of contour data distorted by position errors of the outer shape. The evaluation results indicate the superiority of the RANSAC algorithm with respect to scalability, robustness and execution time.

Polaris sensor Technologies reports on the development of Pedestrian Automated System for Enforcement and Safety (PASES), a radar and video based system used to monitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic with the intent of improving pedestrian safety. Data is fused from a system of multiple sensors and multiple sensor modalities to identify vehicular violations of pedestrian right of way. A focus was placed on the selection of low cost COTS sensors to make the system more widely available to state and local DOTs with limited budgets. applications include automated enforcement, adaptive traffic control, and improved intersection and crosswalk design based on high quality data available for traffic engineering. We discuss early results with high fidelity sensors, and the performance trades made in order to make the system affordable. A discussion of the system processing architecture is included which highlights the treatment of each sensor data type, and the means of combining the processed data products into state information related to traffic incidents involving vehicles and pedestrians.
