This paper contains preliminary steps in demonstrating how the Dempster Shafer theory can be placed into the framework of category theory. In the Dempster Shafer setting, the elements of the base set of a probability space are, typically, subsets of some set. Consequently, the elements of the corresponding sigma algebra are not subsets of a set, but rather, subsets of subsets of a set. A probability function, in this case, no longer has the classical meaning. This situation lends itself to the more general notions of inner and outer measures, which Shafer calls belief and plausibility, respectively. The categorical approach attempts to unify classical and non-classical concepts into a setting, so that, depending on the nature of the stochastic problem at hand, a general framework may be specialized appropriately to attack the problem.

We use measure theoretic methods to describe the relationship between the Dempster Shafer (DS) theory and Bayesian (i.e. probability) theory. Within this framework, we demonstrated the relationships among Shafer's belief and plausibility, Dempster's lower and upper probabilities and inner and outer measures. Dempster's multivalued mapping is an example of a random set, a generalization of the concept of the random variable. Dempster's rule of combination is the product measure on the Cartesian product of measure spaces. The independence assumption of Dempster's rule arises from the nature of the problem in which one has knowledge of the marginal distributions but wants to calculate the joint distribution. We present an engineering example to clarify the concepts.

Bayes' rule and Dempster's combination are typically presumed to be radically different procedures for fusing evidence. This paper demonstrates that measurement-update using Dempster's combination is a special case of measurement-update using Bayes' rule. The demonstration is based on an analogy with the Kalman filter. Suppose that the data consists of linear-Gaussian point measurements. Then ask, What additional assumptions must be made so that the Bayes filter can be solved in algebraically closed form? The Kalman filter is the result. In similar fashion, suppose that the data consists of measurements that are "uncertain" in a Dempster-Shafer sense. Then ask, What additional assumptions must be made so that the Bayes filter can be solved in algebraically closed form? Dempster's combination turns out to be the result. Stated differently: Both the Kalman measurement-update equations and Dempster's combination are corrector steps of the recursive Bayes filter, given that it has been restricted to two different types of measurements.

Area surveillance for guarding and intruder detection with a combined camera radar sensor is considered. This specific sensor combination is attractive since complementary information is provided by the respective elements. Thus, a more complete description of objects of interest can be obtained. Several strategies to fuse the data are discussed. Results obtained with 'live' experiments are presented. When compared to camera only, a significant reduction of the number of false tracks is achieved.

Here is what we have done in this study: 1). Our previous results of spatio-temporal fusion for target classification have been further developed for target detection. (SPIE AeroSense, Vol. 4731, pp. 204-215, April, 2002) 2). Different temporal integration (fusion) strategies have been developed and compared, including pre-detection integration (such as additive, multiplicative, MAX, and MIN fusions), as well as the traditional post-detection integration (the persistency test). 3). In our 2nd study, The temporal correlation and non-stationary properties of sensor noise have been investigated using sequences of imagery collected by an IR (256x256) sensor looking at different scenes (trees, grass, roads, buildings, etc.). 4). The natural noise extracted from the IR sensor, as well as noise generated by a computer with Gaussian and Rayleigh distributions have been used to test and compare different temporal integration strategies. Some preliminary results are summarized here: 1). Both the pre- and post-detection temporal integrations can considerably improve target detection by integrating only 3~5 time frames (tested by real sensor noise as well as computer generated noise). 2). The detection results can be further improved by combining both the pre- and post-detection temporal integrations. 3). The sensor noise at most (> 95%) of the sensor pixels are near stationary and un-correlated between pixels as well as (almost) un-correlated across time frames under a good weather condition. 4). The noise at a few pixels near some surface edges has shown non-stationary properties (with increasing or decreasing mean across time).

Spatially distributed network of sensor nodes with onboard seismic and acoustic sensors is an important class of emerging networked systems for various security applications. One of a main task in these applications is target detection. In order to achieve this with improved accuracy, it is necessary that sensors process and share information efficiently. This paper presents a novel approach to fuse the data of acoustic and seismic sensors based on correlation measures so that high detection range and/or detection rate can be achieved. This method calculates the weighted values of both the sensors and the values of their weights are adjusted as the change of correlation measures is observed. It gives greater weighted value to the greater correlation measure of the sensor signals, and vice versa. One of the advantages of this method is that the weights of the sensors are adjusted dynamically for real-time data. The method does not depend on prior information of the sensor's data. This method considers the limited range of both the acoustic and the seismic sensors and fuses the signals in terms of maximum possible detection range. In case of failure of one of the sensor, the method still provides the target information.

The Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Science and Technology (DUSD/S&T), as part of their ongoing ATR Program, has sponsored an effort to develop and demonstrate methods for evaluating ATR algorithms that utilize multiple data sources, i.e., fusion-based ATR. The AFRL COMPASE Center has formed a strong ATR evaluation team and this paper presents results from this program, focusing on the human-in-the-loop, i.e. assisted image exploitation. Reliance on Automated target recognition (ATR) technology is essential to the future success of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Often, ATR technology is designed to aid the analyst, but the final decision rests with the human. Traditionally, evaluation of ATR systems has focused mainly on the performance of the algorithm. Assessing the benefits of ATR assistance for the user raises interesting methodological challenges. We will review the critical issues associated with evaluations of human-in-the-loop ATR systems and present a methodology for conducting these evaluations. Experimental design issues addressed in this discussion include training, learning effects, and human factors issues. The evaluation process becomes increasingly complex when data fusion is introduced. Even in the absence of ATR assistance, the simultaneous exploitation of multiple frames of co-registered imagery is not well understood. We will explore how the methodology developed for exploitation of a single source of data can be extended to the fusion setting.

A perceptual reasoning system adaptively extracting, associating, and fusing information from multiple sources, at various levels of abstraction, is considered as the building block for the next generation of surveillance systems. A system architecture is presented which makes use of both centralized and distributed predetection fusion combined with intelligent monitor and control coupling both on-platform and off-board track and decision level fusion results. The goal of this system is to create a `gestalt fused sensor system' whose information product is greater than the sum of the information products from the individual sensors and has performance superior to either individual or a sub-group of combined sensors. The application of this architectural concept to the law enforcement arena (e.g. drug interdiction) utilizing multiple spatially and temporally diverse surveillance platforms and/or information sources, is used to illustrate the benefits of the adaptive perceptual reasoning system concept.

fusion of radar and EO-sensors, is investigated for the purpose of surveillance in littoral waters is. All sensors are considered to be co-located with respect to the distance, typically I to 10 km, of the area under surveillance. The sensor suite is a coherent polarimetric radar in combination with a set of camera's sensitive to visible light, near infrared, mid infrared and far-infrared., Although co-located, the sensors are dissimilar and not necessarily synchronized. A critical aspect for beneficial fusion in this application is correct association of information from these sensors. Various architectures are considered and it will be. argued that a fuse while track algorithm is the most suitable algorithm in this case. Discussed is how such an algorithm is designed and applied. To improve association reliability also non-kinematic features of both sensor types are considered. Investigated in particular is, which features from contacts measured with the polarimetric radar and the EO-sensors are correlated. These features and their correlations are incorporated in the tracking process. Preliminary results are shown.

In the Dempster Shafer context, one can construct new types of information measures based on belief and plausibility functions. These measures differ from those in Shannon's theory because, in his theory, information measures are based on probability functions. Other types of information measures were discovered by Kampe de Feriet and his colleagues in the French and Italian schools of mathematics. The objective of this paper is to construct a new category of information. I use category theory to construct a general setting in which the various types of information measures are special cases.
