This paper applies the Compressed Sensing (CS) the targets detection in small scale dense Wireless Sensors Networks (WSN). The monitored area is partitioned into cells, each equipped by one sensor. The CS application aims to locate targets from a reduced subset of sensors measurements. A generalized version of a recently proposed Greedy Matching Pursuit algorithm (GMP), designed for point events joint detection and counting, is derived, which is denoted by gGMP. This generalization enables the identification of several active cells at each iteration. Also, an optimized deterministic sensors subset selection scheme, based on the maximum energy is envisaged and shown to outperform the random choice scheme.

This paper aims to enhance the efficiency of teaching and learning by leveraging computer vision technology for automated analysis of student behavior in the classroom. We propose a feature-enhanced method for recognizing student behavior, which integrates an Upsampling module (UPS) and a convolutional block layer (CBL) module into the YOLOv5 model. This innovative approach significantly improves the detection and feature extraction capabilities for student targets, effectively addressing challenges associated with small-sized targets and lowresolution images. Through algorithm optimization, it achieves a balance in sample diversity, enhancing the model's adaptability and generalizability in complex classroom environments. Building upon these technological advancements, we have developed a Classroom Student Posture Perception System (CSP2S). This system integrates functions for data collection, student behavior detection, and result visualization. The CSP2S operates in realtime by capturing and analyzing students' behavioral dynamics while providing teachers with immediate feedback. Experimental results demonstrate that this system substantially reduces teachers' workload in student assessment, offering significant potential to improve teaching effectiveness. These robust technical advancements provide strong support for future applications in real educational environments. © 2023 IEEE.

The Large Area Pico-second Photo-Detectors presented in this contribution integrate a photocathode, glass capillary micro-channel plates (MCP) activated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of independent layers of secondary electron emitter and resistive materials, and collecting anodes. Applications range from medical imaging (positron emission tomography) to tracking and calorimetry for high energy physics experiments. These devices are read out from both ends of a set of GHz-bandwidth transmission lines. This allows daisy-chaining of multiple devices to achieve large area detectors with time resolutions on the order of 10-100 pico-seconds and position resolutions of less than one millimeter in each of two spatial dimensions. First tests with pairs of small glass capillary have demonstrated gains of 10(5) to 10(7). A new 6-channel ASIC has been designed in 130 nm CMOS technology to sample and digitize detector data. This ASIC can sample at 15 GS/s with an intrinsic analog bandwidth above 1.5 GHz, and digitizes 1280 cells in parallelin two micro-seconds with 12-bit resolution. Digital signal processing of sampled waveforms from MCP devices is expected to achieve timing and position resolutions comparable to those obtained with digital oscilloscopes.

Modern radar systems have considerable flexibility in their modes of operation. In particular, it is possible to modify the waveform on a pulse to pulse basis, and electronically steered phased arrays can quickly point the radar beam in any feasible direction. Such flexibility calls for new methods of scheduling, both of the waveform and the beam direction so as to optimize the radar performance. We consider a radar system capable of rapid beam steering and of waveform switching. The transmit waveform is chosen from a small library. The operational requirement of the radar is to track a number of manoeuvring targets while performing surveillance for new potential targets. Tracking is accomplished by means of an LMIPDA (linear multitarget integrated probabilistic data association) tracker. An interacting multiple models (IMM) method is used to model manoeuvering targets in the tracker. LMIPDA provides a probability of track existence, permitting adoption of a "track-before-detect" technique. "False alarm" tracks are maintained until the probability of track existence falls below a threshold. Our aim is to maintain the tracks of the existing targets to within a specified accuracy as determined by the absolute value of the track error covariance matrix. However, this has to be done within the time available, given that a full scan has to be performed within a prescribed interval. We give an algorithm for scheduling revisits to measure the targets while maintaining surveillance.

The topic of sparse representations (SR) of images has attracted tremendous interest from the research community in the last ten years. This interest stems from the fundamental role that the low dimensional models play in many signal and image processing areas, i.e., real world images can be well approximated by a linear combination of a small number of atoms (i.e., patches of images) taken from a large frame, often termed dictionary. The principal point is that these large dictionaries as well as the elements of these dictionaries taken for approximation are not known in advance and should be taken from given noisy observations. The sparse phase and amplitude reconstruction (SPAR) algorithm has been developed for monochromatic coherent wave field reconstruction, for phase-shifting interferometry and holography. In this paper the SPAR technique is extended to off-axis holography. Pragmatically, SPAR representations are result in design of efficient data-adaptive filters. We develop and study the algorithm where these filters are applied for denoising of phase and amplitude in object and sensor planes. This algorithm is iterative and developed as a maximum likelihood optimal solution provided that the noise in intensity measurements is Gaussian. The multiple simulation and real data experiments demonstrate the advance performance of the new technique.

The paper addresses interferometric phase image estimation, that is, the estimation of phase modulo-2π images from sinusoidal 2π-periodic and noisy observations. These degradation mechanisms make interferometric phase image estimation a challenging problem. We tackle this challenge by reformulating the true estimation problem as a sparse regression in the complex domain. Following the standard procedure in patch-based image restoration, the image is partitioned into small overlapping square patches. BM3D algorithm equipped with high order SVD (HOSVD) is used to form complex domain frames suitable to sparse representations of the complex-valued data. HOSVD applied to the groups of BM3D data enables the design of spatially variant and data adaptive orthonormal complex domain transforms. The effectiveness of the new sparse coding based approach to interferometric phase estimation, termed Interferometric PHASE via Block matching and High order SVD (InPHASE-BHS) is illustrated in a series of simulation experiments where it outperforms the state-of-the-art. © 2014 IEEE.

A knowledge-aided direct data domain (D3) algorithm, which is applied to the space-time adaptive processing (STAP), is proposed. The conventional D3 algorithm only uses the test data to avoid heterogeneous training data. However, the prior knowledge of target is always not accurate, leading to performance degradation. The D3 algorithm based on sparse representation suffers target self-nulling and clutter suppression performance degradation. To overcome these disadvantages, a knowledge-aided D3 algorithm is proposed to improve the STAP performance. The prior knowledge about clutter distribution of forward-looking airborne radar is exploited to distinguish clutter components and targets. Furthermore, the clutter components can be eliminated from the sparse recovery coefficient vector. Hence, we can judge if the targets are present via the power of reminder element. Then, the clutter components are exploited to estimate the STAP filter weight, which can supply satisfactory clutter suppression performance. Experiments validate that the proposed algorithm separate the clutter components and targets directly without the prior knowledge of targets, and the target detection performance is improved significantly.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) represent a significant burden to healthcare provision;in the United States alone, it is estimated that approximately 2 million patients acquire HAIs each year. As part of a larger effort to understand how HAIs spread, we deployed a wireless sensor network in the Medical Intensive Care Unit of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. We used data reported by the network to estimate healthcare worker movement, interactions between healthcare workers, and adherence to hand sanitization policies. Our experiment joins the growing yet still small collection of sensor network deployments in healthcare settings. This work contributes to this body of research by presenting a comprehensive approach to pre-processing the collected sensor data, thereby reducing errors and increasing robustness. We provide two main contributions: (i) a simple and theoretically sound calibration method for sensor signals that eliminates biases in pairwise sensor communication and (ii) filters that increase the reliability of signal strength from stationary sensors. We validate our methods by comparing visits of healthcare workers to rooms, as discovered from the sensor data, to ground truth room occupancy data collected in notes. © 2013 ACM.

Message Authentication Codes (MACs) are very sensitive to any modification in the message. The verification fails even if there is a slight change in the message. However, special algorithms have been introduced that tolerate a small amount of noise in messages as required by some applications. Noise Tolerant Message Authentication Code (NTMAC) is an example of noise tolerant authenticator algorithm. NTMAC is block oriented and unlike MAC it localizes errors at the block level. Nevertheless, there is no efficient way for correcting erroneous blocks by NTMAC. This paper presents a novel algorithm as an enhancement of NTMAC, called the Error Correcting - NTMAC (EC-NTMAC) and a variant of EC-NTMAC, called the Error Correcting - Weighted NTMAC (EC-WNTMAC). EC-NTMAC introduces error correction of erroneous blocks and EC-WNTMAC extends EC-NTMAC to the correction of blocks based on their importance level or the so called weight. The later approach makes the EC-NTMAC more suitable for some applications like image and multimedia communications where few errors are acceptable. Simulation results, showing capabilities of both of the proposed algorithms as well as the performance and security considerations are given in the paper. © 2011 IEEE.
