Since the early 1990s, significant research has been done on a relatively new algorithm called the Probabilistic MultiHypothesis Tracker (PMHT). The majority of this research has concluded that there are a few weaknesses with this approach to tracking targets in the presence of clutter. First, the number of targets that are being tracked needs to be known a priori. Second, in order for the algorithm to operate properly, a very good initiation must be performed. Without a very close initiation, the PMHT usually fails to "lock on" to the target correctly. To address both of these issues, a hybrid approach is proposed. This hybrid approach will use a Multi-Hypothesis Tracking (MHT) algorithm to initiate new tracks and to continue tracking them until a track is stable. Then it will hand these tracks off to the PMHT to maintain. The MHT is very good at initiating new tracks, and the PMHT is best at maintaining multiple tracks because the algorithm's complexity with tracking additional targets grows linearly as opposed to exponentially'.

The main infrared search and track systems (IRST) purpose is to realize optimal discrimination between true targets and background clutter (false alarm). In such single band systems, two dimensional least mean square (TDLMS) adaptive filter achieve good results in small target detection. However, detection performance are strongly dependent on background correlation length. When difference between background and target correlation length is too small, performance detection decreases. The method presented in this paper is applied to a naval dual band panoramic surveillance system for target detection at low elevation angles. It consists in adjusting the time-varying convergence factor of TDLMS filter, not only by using spatial statistics, but also by integrating a local spectral parameter. The use of this information is based on theoretical spectral radiance discrimination in LWIR and MWIR bands, between targets and backgrounds. When the local spectral parameter matches spectral background response, the filter reactivity is optimum via the spatial convergence factor, whereas it is decreased in the presence of spectral target characteristics. We achieve in this way a better target-to-clutter discrimination and independently of background correlation length.

In this paper, we use an adaptive AR (Auto regressive) model to optimally filter background texture from images. The filter maps background texture into minimum variance locally white noise. An additive point target signal, however, is unaffected by the filter thereby effectively maximizing the signal to noise/clutter ratio. Thus, filter output thresholding can detect anomalous pixels in the images. Additionally the paper introduces a false alarm rejection scheme based on the intersection of a Four Quadrant AR (Quad-AR) filter. The paper addresses the implicit background assumptions in this approach and the median filter approach to small target detection. An example application of the filter to infrared images of missiles immersed in intense sea glint is presented. The AR filter performance is compared to a median filter performance. It is shown that for the infrared sub-pixel missile over sea problem, the Quad-AR approach is substantially better than previous approaches.

There has been a growing interest in tracking maneuvering point-targets since the last decade. Up to now however, no algorithm has been proposed for tracking maneuvering and bending extended target in clutter. We develop in this paper a new approach based on Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) combined with a new Fast Point Pattern Matching (FPPM) algorithm to solve this new tracking problem. Simulation results for a bending target having four dynamic models and possibly two point-patterns are given to illustrate the ability of this new approach to track a maneuvering and bending extended target in 2D space.

The method of estimation of the correlation functions of processes at the outputs of the optimal and generalized detectors is proposed. The time interval [0,T] for the input stochastic process is bounded. Proposed method allows to determine the detection characteristics of the optimal and generalized detectors more carefully. Using the proposed method of the correlation function estimation we can make a prediction about the probability of detection with the great accuracy both for the optimal detector and for the generalised detector taking into consideration the signal base. In line with the proposed method of the estimation of correlation functions the probability distribution density of the background noise at the output of the generalized detector is determined more exactly. There is a correlation between the parameters of the probability distribution density of the background noise at the output of the generalized detector and the signal base. This correlation exerts the essential action on the detection characteristics that is very important in practice.

In this paper we present an approach for tracking with a high-bandwidth active sensor in very long range scenarios. We show that in these scenarios the extended Kalman filter is not desirable as it suffers from major consistency problems;and most flavors of particle filter suffer from a loss of diversity among particles after resampling. This leads to sample impoverishment and the divergence of the filter. In the scenarios studied, this loss of diversity can be attributed to the very low process noise. However, a regularized particle filter is shown to avoid this diversity problem while producing consistent results. The regularization is accomplished using a modified version of the Epanechnikov kernel.

Experimental remote sensing data from the 8 to 12 mu m wavelength NASA Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) have been a valuable resource for multispectral algorithm proof-of-concept, a prime example being a Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) spectral small target detector founded on maximum likelihood theory;CFAR tests on low signal-to-clutter ratio rural Australian TIMS imagery yielded a detection rate of 5 out of 7 (71%) for small extended targets, e. g. buildings similar to 10 meters in extent, at a 10(-6) false alarm rate. Separately, techniques such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA) have since shown good promise for small target detection as well as terrain feature extraction. In this study, we first provide higher-confidence CFAR performance estimates by incorporating a larger set of imagery including ASTER satellite multi-band imagery and ground truth. Secondly, alongside CFAR we perform ICA, which effectively separates many non-natural features from the highly cluttered natural terrain background;in particular, our TIMS results show that a surprisingly small subset of ICA components contain the majority of non-natural "signal" such as paved roads amid the clutter of soil, rock, and vegetation.

In this paper we examine new data structures and algorithms for efficient and accurate gating and identification of potential track/observation associations. Specifically, we focus on the problem of continuous timed data, where observations arrive over a range of time and each observation may have a unique time stamp. For example, the data may be a continuous stream of observations or consist of many small observed subregions. This contrasts with previous work in accelerating this task, which largely assumes that observations can be treated as arriving in batches at discrete time steps. We show that it is possible to adapt established techniques to this modified task and introduce a novel data structure for tractably dealing with very large sets of tracks. Empirically we show that these data structures provide a significant benefit in both decreased computational cost and increased accuracy when contrasted with treating the observations as if they occurred at discrete time steps.
