A detection scheme is proposed for targets in a correlated interference environment. The scheme does not require training data but uses the bootstrap to estimate the distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis directly from the received data. It also provides estimates of the frequency and phase of the target return as by-products. Simulation results are provided that indicate its performance for correlated Gaussian and non-Gaussian interference. Good detection of 100% is achievable at -5 dB signal-to-noise ratio for sample sizes as small as 500 data points.

Ultrasound detection of capillary blood flow is difficult as capillary blood flow provides a weak backscattered signal with a small Doppler shift. To aid in the detection of such signals, a new algorithm is introduced exploiting two powerful ideas. First, the receiver is developed by creating subspaces corresponding to expected flow and clutter signals. It then exploits the fact that some of the basis vectors in the flow and clutter subspaces are very nearly perpendicular. By projecting the input data onto the perpendicular components of the flow subspace a very sensitive detector can be realized. Secondly, the detector coherently sums inputs from several angles. In vitro ultrasound data is collected and applied to the detector. The algorithm utilizing multiple angles is shown to be sensitive detecting flow in the experimental data down to 5 mm/sec in a 6 mm diameter channel.

This paper describes the application of a discriminative HMM parameter estimation technique called frame discrimination (FD), to medium and large vocabulary continuous speech recognition. Previous work has shown that FD training can give better results than maximum mutual information (MMI) training for small tasks. The use of FD for much larger tasks required the development of a technique to be able to rapidly find the most likely set of Gaussians for each frame in the system. Experiments on the resource management and North American business tasks show that FD training can give comparable improvements to MMI, but is less computationally intensive.

In 1996, the United States Air Force initiated the Advanced Airborne Surveillance Program (AASP) to develop and demonstrate the detection performance of state-of-the-art multi-channel bistatic airborne radar technology. The AASP sensor utilizes a multi-channel, phased-array receiver, mounted on a BAC1-11 to collect and process bistatic radar returns from moving targets, clutter and jammers. The bistatic multi-channel airborne radar measurements (MCARM) data provides a good starting point in developing STAP algorithms for the AASP system. The steady exploitation of the MCARM data has yielded much insight into the performance of several STAP algorithms in various monostatic as well as bistatic scenarios. This paper describes the bistatic experiments and presents several results attesting to the applicability of STAP algorithms to the bistatic scenarios.

Residue Number System based applications involve modulo-arithmetic which is typically implemented using look-up-tables (LUTs) for a small value of modulus. In this paper we present a data coding technique to minimize the area of these LUTs when implemented using two level logic structures such as PLAs. We also present a technique that exploits the symmetry in these computations to further optimize the LUTs. Results show that area improvement of upto 66% can be achieved using these techniques.

The Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM) techniques are increasingly being used for both speaker identification and verification. Most of these models assume diagonal covariance matrices. Although empirically any distribution can be approximated with a diagonal GMM, a large number of mixture components are usually needed to obtain a good approximation. A consequence of using a large GMM is that its training is time consuming and its response speed is very slow. This paper proposes a modification to the standard diagonal GMM approach. The proposed scheme includes an orthogonal transformation: feature vectors are first transformed to the space spanned by the eigenvectors of the covariance matrix before applying to the diagonal GMM. Only a small computational load is introduced by this transformation, but results from both speaker identification and verification experiments indicated that the orthogonal transformation considerably improves the recognition performance. For a specific performance level, the GMM with orthogonal transform needs only one-fourth the number of Gaussian functions required by the standard GMM.

Differential coding allows for the representation of the signals in a digital form with small word length and at the same time it ensures a specified resolution, compression and protection from interference. The use of differences and delta modulation (DM) for the economical representation and efficient processing of images needs the development of existing methods and the working out of simple and fast processing methods in real time. Therefore DFT methods were proposed in mixed formats which are better both in DFT with PCM and DFT with differences or DM. The use of DFT algorithms in such formats is expedient in neural systems.

This paper proposes a high-performance low-power asynchronous architecture for matrix-vector multipliers of a constant matrix by a vector which are typically used in discrete cosine transform (DCT) and inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) applications. The architecture takes advantage of the statistics of DCT and IDCT data that suggest that the input data have mostly zero or small values. It avoids unnecessary arithmetic operations by quickly terminating multiplication by zero and significantly reduces power and delay when operating on a small-valued data by adaptively controlling effective word lengths using fine-grain bit-partitioning and speculative completion sensing.

This paper presents new properties of the discrete morphological skeleton representation of binary images, for lossless binary image compression, that is based on these properties. We proposed a morphological recognition algorithm using threshold linear superposition theory to analyze the distribution of randomly spaced and oriented blob shaped particles. We recognized the size and position of randomly shaped particles by using the hit/miss transform. We also illustrate the improvement mathematical morphology makes on the entropy thresholding of small targets.
