With high resolution radars, realistic objects should be considered as extended rather than point targets. If several closely-spaced targets fall within the same radar beam and between adjacent matched filter samples in range, the full monopulse information from all of these samples can and should be used for estimation, both of angle and of range (with the range to sub-bin accuracy). To detect and localize multiple unresolved extended targets, we establish a model for monopulse radar returns from extended objects, and use a maximum likelihood estimator to localize the targets. Rissanen's minimum description length (MDL) will be used to decide the number of existing extended objects. We compare the new extended target monopulse processing scheme with previously developed point target monopulse techniques to show the improvement in terms of the estimation of target locations, the detection of the number of existing targets, and the tracking performance with a multiple hypothesis tracker (MHT) using the output from the proposed extended target monopulse processor.

In radar problems involving weak signal detection conventional space-time processing cannot be used to separate the target from the clutter when the spatial and Doppler spectra of the target and clutter overlap. In such problems the concept of the locally optimum detector (LOD) is useful in coming up with a decision rule to discriminate between the two hypotheses of signal present or signal absent. The clutter, which may be correlated, can arise from either a non-Gaussian or Gaussian random process. For correlated multivariate K-distributed clutter it is shown in this paper that performance improvements can be obtained with an LOD receiver compared to the conventional Gaussian linear receiver.

Precision registration (alignment) of images is utilized in dim target detection, temporal change detection, and other surveillance applications. The Cramer-Rao bound on the accuracy of parameter estimation governs the fundamental limit on the accuracy of image registration. This presentation derives the Cramer-Rao bound on registration accuracy, with emphasis on how registration accuracy depends on sensor noise, scene geometry, image characteristics and the number of pixels used in the registration process, and compares the Cramer-Rao bound prediction to registration results from the SAIC IR processing code, STAS, for both synthetically generated scenes and real IR data.

This paper proposes the maritime small targets detection method of passive bistatic radar (PBR) using a noncooperative pulse radar as an illuminator. Compared with other opportunity illuminators, the transmitting signal of a radar usually has a better ambiguity function, which leads to a higher range resolution, but there is a problem that radar transmitting signal parameters are unknown, and radar signal processing, such as pulse compression, non-coherent integration, and CFAR processing cannot be conducted accurately. The proposed method estimates radar signal parameters from the direct-path signal, and uses estimated parameters to radar signal processing of the scattered echo. The experiments use the shore-based maritime surveillance radar as a transmitter and ships in the harbor as the targets, which show that the proposed method can be applied to maritime small targets detection successfully. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel mid-wave infrared (MWIR) small target detection dataset (MWIRSTD) comprising 14 video sequences containing approximately 1053 images with annotated targets of three distinct classes of small objects. Captured using cooled MWIR imagers, the dataset offers a unique opportunity for researchers to develop and evaluate state-of-the-art methods for small object detection in realistic MWIR scenes. Unlike existing datasets, which primarily consist of uncooled thermal images or synthetic data with targets super-imposed onto the background or vice versa, MWIRSTD provides authentic MWIR data with diverse targets and environments. Extensive experiments on various traditional methods and deep learning-based techniques for small target detection are performed on the proposed dataset, providing valuable insights into their efficacy. In this paper we present a new algorithm for approximating the target-measurement association probabilities of the Joint Probabilistic data Association Filter (JPDAF). This algorithm is designed to robustify the JPDAF against track coalescence which can greatly degrade the performance of the JPDAF and other approximate algorithms. It is based on the works of Roecker and the JPDAF* of Blom and Bloem. We compare our new algorithm with the two it is based on, as well as the "cheap JPDAF" and the Set JPDAF, and show that it offers a significant improvement in computational complexity over the JPDAF*, and improvement in tracking error over the Roecker algorithm. We compare their performance with respect to the Mean Optimal Subpattern Assignment (MOSPA) statistic in scenarios involving several closely-spaced targets. A consistency comparison of the various algorithms considered is also presented.

In target detection and tracking applications with imagery data taken from a moving camera platform, it is necessary to segment potential targets in each image frame. This is typically done by preprocessing individual images to exploit some known attribute about the data. Often these methods make many false detections, particularly in the presence of additive noise, and the results thus require significant post-processing. A means of estimating the background in the imagery sequence under the formalism of the Kalman filter is suggested. This background estimate is then used to recast the segmentation problem as one of outlier detection, and the result of segmentation is used to modify the filter update. Ways of making the technique computationally benign are discussed. The technique is used to analyse a simulated image sequence, and the performance is compared to that of a single-frame back-round-estimation technique. The feasibility of target segmentation via background tracking is thus demonstrated.

This paper presents a new small target detection method using scale invariant feature. Detecting small targets whose sizes are varying is very important to automatic target detection in infrared search and track (IRST). The conventional spatial filtering methods with fixed sized kernel show limited target detection performance for incoming targets. The scale invariant target detection can be defined as searching for maxima in the 3D (x, y, and scale) representation of an image with the Laplacian function. The scale invariant feature can detect different sizes of targets robustly. Experimental results with real FUR images show higher detection rate and lower false alarm rate than conventional methods. Furthermore, the proposed method shows very low false alarms in scan-based IR images than conventional filters.

Within an Air Traffic Control (ATC) context many applications exist for off-line trajectory reconstruction such as evaluation of tracking or navigation systems and accident/incident investigations. Since the introduction of Jump-Linear models and associated filtering techniques enabled significant improvements in tracking small targets with useful applications to ATC one may expect that parallel developments in smoothing for Jump Linear systems enable similarly useful applications to aircraft trajectory reconstruction. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the validity of this expectation.

This paper describes a theoretically rigorous, systematic, and unified approach to the problem of estimating the numbers, identities, and kinematics of multiple targets observed by multiple sensors. The approach, which is based on a new statistical approach called finite-set statistics (FISST), is motivated in part by the following observation: When the number of targets is unknown, we encounter fundamental conceptual and practical difficulties when trying to do Bayes-optimal multitarget filtering and estimation in accordance with standard statistical reasoning. We describe these difficulties, outline the FISST approach to resolving them, and illustrate FISST by applying it to a model problem due to Oliver Drummond.
