The objective of the Joint Multi-sensor Mine-signatures (MsMs) campaign is to organize and execute an experimental campaign for collecting data of buried land-mines with multiple sensors. These data sets will then be made widely available to researchers and developers working on sensor fusion, signal processing for improved detection and identification of land-mines, assessing the role of the operator in the detection process, etc.... The outdoor test facility (5.7 x 80 m) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, located at Ispra (Italy), houses the test minefield. Six test strips of 6 x 6 m consisting of different soil types (cluttered grassy terrain, loamy soil, sandy soil, clay soil, soil with high content of organic matter, and ferromagnetic soil) are complemented with one reference test strip of 6 x 6 m consisting of pure sand. The list of objects buried in the minefield includes mine simulants of three different dimensions with either a low or a high metal content, reference targets for position referencing and calibration checking, and clutter objects including empty bullet cartridges, metal cans, barbed wire, stones, wood, plastic boxes, etc.... This test minefield is going to be left intact for a long period, in order to be able to perform multiple runs on it. For the test campaign of the year 2000, the core sensors were a metal detector, a ground penetrating radar, a microwave radiometer, and thermal infrared imagers. Later, other (more experimental) detectors will also be tested on the same test minefield. The first data sets are in the process of being released right now.

Glass is a hard transparent material with many applications in Photonics and advanced display industries. It is a high challenge to achieve crack-free glass microfabrication due to its special material characteristics. Laser-induced-plasma-assisted ablation is applied in this study to get the high quality glass microfabrication. In this processing, the laser beam goes through the glass substrate first and then irradiates on a solid target behind. For laser fluence above ablation threshold for the target the generated plasma flies forward at a high speed. At a small target-to-substrate distance, there are strong interactions among laser light, target plasma and glass materials at the rear side of the substrate. Light absorption characteristic at the glass substrate is modified since the plasma may soften and dope into the glass in the interaction area. To have a better understanding of. this processing, signal diagnostics are carried out to study the dynamic interaction. It is found that glass microfabrication is closely related to laser fluence, target-to-substrate distance, laser spot size and laser beam scanning speed. With proper control of the processing parameters, glass surface marking, patterning and cutting can be achieved. With different materials as the targets, color marking of glass substrate can be obtained.

A simple ISAR range-Doppler algorithm is applicable to steadily small flying target. However, for a maneuvering target the assumption is not satisfied, as the Doppler frequency has a time variation property. Actually, to obtain the cross-range resolution of dozens of centimeters for the large-scale or medium targets especially for the S or L wave band, where the wavelength is not shorter, the migration through the resolution cell (MTRC) would occur on both fringes of the ISAR imaging. The reason for this migration through the resolution cell is discussed, and a compensating algorithm is proposed. Simulated data and real data prove that this method is effective.

Under the operating mode of a small satellites system which uses multi-satellites or multi-constellations, more satellites exist at the same time in the view area of one TTC (telemetry tracking and command) station than in traditional systems. Obviously, it is unable to manage them by traditional methods. This paper proposes a new technique, which combines SDMA (space-division multiple access) with spread spectrum CDMA (code-division multiple access). Multi-beamforming is available by parallel data processing and one small satellite is tracked by one beam. Finally, simulation results of digital beamforming are provided.

Real-time detection and identification of man-made objects or materials ("targets") from airborne platforms using hyperspectral sensors are of great interest for civilian and military applications. Over the past several years, different algorithms for the detection of targets with known spectral signature have been developed. Most of these algorithms have been reviewed by Manolakis, Shaw and Keshava (see Algorithms for Multispectral and Hyperspectral Imagery, Orlando, FL, April 2000, SPIE) within a unified theoretical and notational framework. In this paper we study adaptive matched subspace detection algorithms for low probability, single-pixel or subpixel targets. These algorithms explore the linear mixing model to both specify the desired target and characterize the interfering background. The derived algorithms are theoretically and experimentally evaluated with regard to two desirable properties: capacity to operate in constant false alarm rate (CFAR) mode and target "visibility" enhancement. Furthermore, an approach is presented for taking into account target variability, when present, to improve detection.

Despite the considerable progress made in the last decade, speech recognition is far from a solved problem. For instance, porting a recognition system to a new task (or language) still requires substantial investment of time and money, as well as expertise in speech recognition. The paper takes a first step at evaluating to what extent a generic state-of-the-art speech recognizer can reduce the manual effort required for system development. We demonstrate the genericity of wide domain models, such as broadcast news acoustic and language models, and techniques to achieve a higher degree of genericity, such as transparent methods to adapt such models to a specific task. This work targets three tasks using commonly available corpora: small vocabulary recognition (TI-digits), text dictation (WSJ), and goal-oriented spoken dialog (ATIS).

Super-resolution ocean surface current algorithm based on MUltiple signal Classification (MUSIC) is used for current mapping of Wuhan University's ocean state measuring and analyzing radar (OSMAR2000), in which MUSIC is applied to estimate the bearings of the first-order sea echo signals. The premise of MUSIC processing is that the number of signals is known in advance. In fact, the number of signals is unknown, and needs to be estimated from received data. In the case of discrete targets, the problem can be perfectly solved using information theoretic criteria such as the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) or the Minimum Description Length (MDL) criterion. However, these criteria are proved unsuccessful for sea echo signals both in simulation and in actual application, since sea surface is essentially a continuum. Therefore, an ad hoc method of detection of number of signals, a bit different from the existent methods, is developed for the current algorithm of OSMAR2000. The underlying idea is to determine the number of signals based on the variance of MUSIC spectra structure under different candidate number of signals.

An experiment in the Adriatic Sea investigated the potential practicality of an inexpensive drifting hydrophone array, preliminarily for use in controlled passive acoustic experiments. Some of the technical challenges that needed to be overcome to make such a system practical included: (1) hydrodynamic stability, (2) dynamic acoustic element localization, (3) in-buoy signal processing to decrease communications bandwidth, and (4) data transmission via low power radio frequency communications from a small buoy. We addressed some of the practical engineering problems inherent in the design of an air-deployed drifting array that is envisioned to eventually be deployable from a sonobuoy launcher, assume a short-term stable configuration while freely drifting in the ocean, and relay compressed or processed data via radio. New developments in electronics (e.g., single-conductor, time-division, digital multiplexing), sensor technology, digital signal processing, and communications were applied to the design problem. In this paper we describe the results from a sea test conducted in the Adriatic Sea during October, 2000. We conclude that: (1) deployment of such an apparatus from a small vessel was realistic and can be extended to autonomous deployment from a variety of platforms; (2) once deployed, the apparatus could be expected to assume a steady-state physical configuration that was stable over representative ADLA deployment time scales (hours to days), given varying oceanographic and meteorological conditions. It is shown that, over a range of conditions, the array behaved in a predictable and measurable manner sufficient to yield data usable as input to standard beamforming algorithms.

This paper analyzes the performance of a coherent modem designed for high-speed vertical transmission at 30 kbit/s from an underwater vehicle to a surface craft. Hardware and power constraints require the modem to be based on a single fixed-point DSP, thus restricting the choice of signal processing algorithms for real-time operation. Under these conditions, high data rates can only be achieved with very favourable communication channels that result from the particular geometric configuration. Channel delay and Doppler spreads under different sea states are characterized using at-sea data collected during the ASIMOV 2000 mission. Several algorithms are tested for adaptation of the equalizer at the receiver, and it is found that simple LMS-type algorithms perform almost as well as more complex alternatives that are known to have superior convergence and tracking properties. The system also includes signal-space coding blocks that are used to lower the error rate without paying in bandwidth or transmitted power. The error probabilities of coded and uncoded modulation are estimated and compared, confirming that coding provides a real, albeit small, performance gain.
