We have developed an acquisition chain, that steers the detection of events characterized by the deposited energy and the arrival time. All analog informations are first converted into temporal informations by means of translators plugged inside each detector, then only logical signals (containing : way number, arrival time, energy) are processed by the system (transmission, multiplexing-dispatching) and are coded by a Fast Multi-hit Time to Digital Converter (FTDC) with a 225 ps resolution and a 24 ns dead time. The FTDC runs without trigger and assigns "absolute value" to each temporal signal. A Digital signal Processor (DSP) processes these values and extracts the events in coincidence according to energy and time gates. So the data are saved on hard disk and the experiment can be reloaded every time it is necessary with different parameters (time and energy windowing). The absolute time saving has the advantage of not making a hardware time adjustment. All processing components are mounted in a dedicated PC board. The system was validated and is currently used for TOHR (French acronym of High Resolution Tomograph), a tomograph developed for high resolution in vivo imaging adapted to small animal models studies. The quadruple coincidences throughput (with 15 detectors) is more than 200,000 events/second. Figure 1 shows the architecture of complete system. The acquisition control and data saving program is written in Labview.

A new algorithm is presented that instantaneously estimates the clutter characteristics in the environment of the radar cell that is processed. No a priori information is used, since the algorithm operates directly on the data of the incoming burst. It is a technique that adapts continuously and instantaneously to the environment. The algorithm, after having identified the sea clutter rejects this sea clutter from the data; thus enhancing the probability of detecting small objects in a clutter environment. The final step is the actual detection that makes use of the advantages of the parametric representation. This results in a lower rate of false detections and as a consequence the later stages, like clustering and tracking, receive a more accurate input. The technique behind this algorithm uses recent developments in parametric time series analysis and performs well in suppressing sea as well as land clutter.

A new two-dimensional position sensitive detector system for small angle neutron scattering experiments is under development. It is based on a 60×60cm2 large 6Li-glass scintillator for the neutron capture and a dispersion of the emitted light on an array of photomultiplier tubes for the derivation of the event position. For subthermal neutrons of 8Å, an efficiency of 96% and a spatial resolution of 8mm are to be achieved. Major improvements have been made in the signal and data processing branch, which aims at an electronical dead time of 1μs. A fast digitalization method using free running ADCs for each photomultiplier combined with FPGAs for a parallel event detection in all channels have been applied. A subsequent farm of up to 16 floating point DSPs is to provide enough computing power for an improved reconstruction of the event position according to a maximum likelihood method.

The features of spatially-coherent active-passive bistatic radar (BSR) with small baseline for observation of non-radiating targets against the background of strong jamming are considered. The principle of informative completeness (PIG) is formulated on the basis of conclusions of statistical theory of an optimal detection-resolution of signals. Its practical use for the organization of information interaction between active and passive channels of BSR and for getting complete coordinate information about both targets and jammers is shown. The applications of double processor adaptive antenna arrays (AAA) for constructing multi-stage space-time adaptive processing (STAP) of wideband signals of BSR are considered. The results of experimental study of informative channels are given and technological aspects in design of STAP in coherent BSR are discussed.

This paper represents a mistracking detection method with wavelet transformation in marine radar processing. The data of the crossing targets are separated by means of the Lipschitz exponent when the tracking gates are aliasing. The real-time wavelet decomposition is derived and employed in the extraction of the local Lipschitz exponent to get a better property of real-time processing. It is demonstrated that the mistracking detection algorithm with the spline wavelet is accurate for the step edge of a time series and is unbiased under the situation of both additive and multiplicative noise.

A method which makes use of the phase information of the spectrum of the radar echo amplitude signal to make azimuth super-resolution, is given. Theoretical analyses and simulation results prove that the method is feasible and can effectively determine whether the radar echoes contain a single target or multi-targets under the condition that the SNR is above 10 dB. The case, in which the time function of the antenna main-lobe is not a match for that of the echo amplitude, is simulated. Finally, the results of processing radar experimental data is presented and indicates again that the method is feasible in practice.

Ultra-wideband synthetic aperture radar (UWB-SAR) systems can be used for imaging underground targets. However, conventional imaging algorithms that assume a constant velocity of propagation will exhibit degradations such as blurred targets and incorrect target locations. A superior approach is to do the processing by migrating the raw data collected by an array of sensors. In this paper, we use a filtering structure for migration as a 2-D all-pass filter, and present a practical processing method for UWB-SAR imaging. Improvements versus conventional SAR image focusing are included.

Detecting and estimating the velocity of slowly moving targets from a moving platform is difficult due to the Doppler broadening of the ground clutter. The latest MTI (moving target indicator) technique employs STAP (space time adaptive processing) to reduce the clutter's signal and thus is able to detect the target's speed. This technique has proven to be very effective for detecting high-speed targets and also for some slower moving targets such as helicopters. If, however, the target's speed is small, such as ground targets, the target's signal is reduced along with the clutter, again rendering the detection of the target's speed difficult. The techniques described in this paper utilize the signals from a multiple sensor system and are based on the correlation of the scattered waves of the target. The Doppler shift of the correlation function is then used to obtain the target's velocity. Unlike conventional MTI radar, our technique makes use of the Doppler shifted phase of the correlation of the scattered waves. Controlled experiments were conducted with an X-band radar and good agreement was obtained with numerical simulations.

The composite signal flow model of computation targets systems with significant control and data processing parts. It builds on the data flow and synchronous data flow models and extends them to include three signal types: nonperiodic signals, sampled signals, and vectorized sampled signals. Vectorized sampled signals are used to represent vectors and computations on vectors. Several conversion processes are introduced to facilitate synchronization and communication with these signals. We discuss the severe implications, that these processes have on the causal behaviour of the system. We illustrate the model and its usefulness with three applications. A co-modelling and co-simulation environment combining Matlab and SDL; a high level timing analysis as a consequence of the operations on vectors; conditions for a parallel, distributed simulation.

In a recent paper, van der Veen has developed a baseband-equivalent data model for antenna array reception of multiple sources subject to incoherent multipath with small delay spread. Capitalizing on the structure of this model, van der Veen proposed a SVD/EVD-based blind beamforming algorithm. The starting point of our work is the realization that the above model can be viewed as a low-rank (trilinear) decomposition of a three-way received data array. Using a basic uniqueness result for low-rank decomposition of three-way arrays, data smoothing, and two new Lemmas pertaining to the so-called k-rank of certain structured matrices, we derive herein several interesting identifiability results for deterministic blind beamforming in the presence of incoherent multipath with small delay spread. The utility of the core results also extends beyond the application scope of this paper.
