Orthogonal fluxgate employing discontinuous excitation

In this work, we suggest a new method for the reduction of the power consumption of an orthogonal fluxgate employing an amorphous wire. In order to reduce the power consumption, we introduce idle intervals in the fluxgate excitation. In fluxgates where the excitation current is applied directly to the wire core, the excitation wave form can easily be manipulated due to the very small impedance of the wire core. The resulted discontinuities in the excitation increase the fluxgate noise by a factor of about 3.5. In order to eliminate this excess noise, we simply discard the data related to the excitation idle intervals from the signal processing of the fluxgate output. As a result, we have reduced the fluxgate power consumption by a factor of 16, from 6.4 mW at 100% duty cycle down to 0.4 mW at 6.25% duty cycle. Since segmentation of surface data is of growing interest, many image segmentation algorithms have already been applied to surfaces. Mesh segmentation can not only be based on color and texture but also on shape properties like curvature. Graph Cuts based methods are very popular and also applicable to mesh data having irregular vertex neighborhoods. However, Graph Cuts suffer from problems such as shortcuts, generation of small regions and sensitivity to variations of the boundary indicator function. Moreover, they are often hard to implement and computationally expensive. Here we show that a quite old approach for image segmentation, a fast and extremely simple greedy algorithm, which we call LexicoGraph Cut, avoids the problems mentioned above. In this paper we use this algorithm to segment triangulated surface meshes and we introduce new boundary indicator functions, which combine color and curvature properties. We show that using these boundary indicator functions the LexicoGraph Cut algorithm produces a globally optimal result regarding a lexicographic optimization criterion.

Aiming at the problem of three-dimensional scattering center extraction based on high resolution range profile (HRRP) sequence, two methods based on projection equation solving and spherical fitting were presented in this paper. Equation solving method was to solve the matrix equation based on the algebraic relations between the 1-D radial distance and 3-D position. Spherical fitting method was to extract scattering centers from the mapping graph according to the spherical distribution of 1-D projection data. In addition, a way of turning precession parameters into angle parameters indirectly was proposed for the difficulty of getting the look angle of the radar, Two methods were all verified by experiments developed with simulated and measured data· Finally, the features and performance of two methods were compared in the paper. The result indicates that the spherical fitting method is better than the equation solving method by 15dB under the same SNR. © 2010 IEEE.

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor has many advantages such as small size, electric insulation and anti-electromagnetic interference. It has a broad application prospect in high voltage power system and current measurement and now it has become a hot spot. Many researchers are focus on the problem of the demodulation of FBG wavelength. The signal processing system with the core of DSP (TMS320VC5402) and the auxiliary chip of MCU has been designed in this article. The hardware and software of the system are introduced in detail. DSP is responsible for data acquisition and processing, MCU is responsible for controlling the stepping motor of the demodulation circuit so as to demodulate the wavelength signal of FBG well enough. The experimental platform of signal processing system is built. Experimental results indicate that this system can operate stable and accurate.

Video-endoscopy is the standard clinical procedure for visual exploration of internal walls of hollow organs. For the bladder, the lesion diagnosis is complex because the endoscopic images are bi-dimensional and cover only small bladder areas. 3D endoscopes, based on stereoscopic active vision principles, were recently proposed and validated. This paper presents a 3D reconstruction algorithm using 2D texture images and a few 3D points located on the internal wall surfaces provided by such endoscopes. The algorithm constructs a 3D panoramic surface using the 3D reconstruction method guided by 2D image registration. We show on realistic bladder phantoms that the algorithm is able to reconstruct 3D points and surfaces with a sub-millimetre accuracy.

In recent years, several surveillance sonar systems have been developed to detect intruders in difficult conditions of coastal waters like ports and harbors. Because man-made noise and reverberation from the bottom and surface are significant in shallow water, the detection process must remove this influence to be robust. Moreover, underwater static objects have strong reflection characteristics, and their echo signal can vary over time. These static objects behave as if they were low-speed, maneuvering, targets like divers. Therefore, they can cause numerous false alarms. These challenges make it difficult to realize an effective sonar-ADT (Automatic target Detection and Tracking) for shallow-coastal harbours. Starting in 2009, our group at the University of Tokyo has developed advanced ADT-techniques that reduces false alarms and improves detection performance using an interferometric method, and delivers improved target-tracking performance under difficult SNR conditions using an original stochastic framework. In April 2010, RESON and the University of Tokyo started a collaborative study for automatic data processing techniques dedicated to surveillance sonars. In this paper, we present an overview of the collaborative research project and the current R&D status. Based on the result of our studies and development, we present the results of newly developed ADT techniques that significantly decrease the false alarm rate. We also present improvement of the tracking performance which is influenced by the fluctuations of the underwater target signal using our R&D techniques.

Face recognition has a great demands in human authentication and it becomes one of the most intensive field of biometrics research areas. In this paper, we present a bio-inspired face recognition system based on linear discriminant analysis and external clue i.e. geometrical features. The use of external clue helps to identify the face among very close match and secondly it also helps in the creation of small data set. The proposed approach is insensitive to large dataset and small sample size (SSS) and it provides 94.5% accuracy on BANCA face database. Experimental and simulation results shows that the proposed scheme has encouraging results for a practical face recognition system. The computational complexity of proposed system is more than conventional LDA due to the computation of weights during recognition and in external clue but on the other it provides significant performance gain especially on similar face database. © 2010 IEEE.

Reliable tracking of people in video and recovering their identities are of great importance to video analytics applications. For outdoor applications, long range identity sensors such as active RFID can provide good coverage in a large open space, though they only provide coarse location information. We propose a probabilistic approach using noisy inputs from multiple long range identity sensors to globally associate and identify fragmented tracklets generated by video tracking algorithms. We extend a network flow based data association model to recover tracklet identity efficiently. Our approach is evaluated using five minutes of video and active RFID measurements capturing four people wearing RFID tags and a couple of passersby. Simulation is then used to evaluate performance for larger number of targets under different scenarios. © 2010 IEEE.
