When composing the control system of a spherical intelligent robot which is based on the image identification, a single chip control method does not have a fast data processing and high movement controlling capacity under the prerequisite of a small system, high precision and a fast response. This paper proposes a double-chip distribution control system based on the newly designed TMS320DM6437 and TMS320F28015 DSP chips, provides the hardware structure, type selection and the interface design of the system, by using a two-stage cache solves the CPU and memory bandwidth problems, and a reset circuit in order to improve the system reliability. The control software uses the model-designing plan that explored under the CCS V3.3 environment, according to its working procedure, carries out a performance test about the rotational station controlling and the signal transmitting reliability project. The experimental results demonstrate that the system deals information quickly, reliable data acquisition and fast dynamic response. The working period is less than 3.65s, and its control accuracy errors are within 0.477°, which can maximum fulfill the robot requirements of the performance. © 2010 IEEE.

Different algorithms for performing Fourier transforms with unequally sampled data in wavenumber space for Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography are considered. The efficiency of these algorithms is evaluated from point-spread functions obtained with a swept-source optical coherence tomography system and from computational time. Images of a 4-layer phantom processed with these different algorithms are compared. We show that convolving the data with an optimized Kaiser-Bessel window allowing a small oversampling factor before computing the fast Fourier transform provides the optimal trade-off between image quality and computational time.

The LabPET scanner is based on avalanche photodiodes individually read out by free running analog to digital converters, giving it the ability to reach high count rates for individual detection crystals. The actual rate performance depends on the supporting firmware that implements the detection, sampling and processing steps in the host programmable devices. The initial firmware version for the LabPET provided the target performance, but was written for functionality rather than maximum throughput. The upgraded firmware optimizes several parts of the analysis flow and uses pipelining techniques to increase count rate performance by 50%, while utilizing 24% less FPGA logic resources and no hardware modifications.

Abnormal skeleton muscle activity during REM sleep is characterized as REM Behaviour Disorder (RBD), and may be an early marker for different neurodegenerative diseases. Early detection of RBD is therefore highly important, and in this ongoing study a semi-automatic method for RBD detection is proposed by analyzing the motor activity during sleep. Method: A total number of twelve patients have been involved in this study, six normal controls and six patients diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease (PD) with RBD. All subjects underwent at least one ambulant polysomnographic (PSG) recording. The sleep recordings were scored, according to the new sleep-scoring standard from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, by two independent sleep specialists. A follow-up analysis of the scoring consensus between the two specialists has been conducted. Based on the agreement of the two manual scorings, a computerized algorithm has been attempted implemented. By analysing the REM and non-REM EMG activity, using advanced signal processing tools combined with a statistical classifier, it is possible to discriminate normal and abnormal EMG activity. Due to the small number of patients, the overall performance of the algorithm was calculated using the leave-one-out approach and benchmarked against a previously published computerized/visual method. Results: Based on the available data and using optimal settings, it was possible to correctly classify PD subjects with RBD with 100% sensitivity, 100% specificity, which is an improvement compared to previous published studies. Conclusion: The overall result indicates the usefulness of a computerized scoring algorithm and may be a feasible way of reducing scoring time. Further enhancement on additional data, i.e. subjects with idiopathic RBD (iRBD) and PD without RBD, is needed to validate its robustness and the overall result.

The current bottlenect in wide area persistent surveillance missions is slow exploitation and analysis (real-time and forensic by human analysts. We are currently developing an automated data exploitation system that can detect, tract, and recognize targets and threats using computer vision. Here we present results from a newly developed target detection process. Depending on target size, target detection can be divided into three detection classes: unresolved targets;small extended targets;and large extended targets. The Matched Filter (MF) method is currently a popular approach for unresolved target detection using IR focal plane arrays and EO (CCD) cameras as sensor detectors. The MF method is much more difficult to apply to the extended target classes, since many different matched filters are needed to match the different target shapes and intensity profiles that can exist. The MF method does not adequately address non-fixed target shapes (e.g., walking or running human). We have developed an approach for robust target detection that can detect targets of different sizes and shapes (fixed/non-fixed) using a combination of image frame time-differencing, deep-thresholding, and target shape and size analysis with non-linear morphological operations. Applications for ground vehicle detection under heavy urban background clutter will be presented.

NTU-Array is a W-band, dual-polarization, 6-receiver interferometer telescope aiming to detect the cross-over of CMB primary and secondary anisotropies. The telescope has 34Ghz instantaneous bandwidth for the continuum observation. The ultra-wide bandwidth is down-converted to four base-bands of 0-8.7Ghz for the ensuing digital correlation. We have completed the development of an FX digital correlator system for NTU-Array, which utilizes 18Ghz, 1-bit samplers for digitization and Virtex-4 FPGAs for subsequent digital processing of Fourier transformation and cross-correlation. This new digital correlator has 275Mhz frequency resolution and is processing in real time the 850 Gbps input data at power consumption about 1 KW. We stress that our present setup substantially under-rates this FPGA computing machine, as it is designed to process 2.5 Tbps input data in real time from 18Ghz, 3-bit ADCs. Verification of this new digital correloator has been completed, and it demonstrates that the correlator can detect small signals with -40db S/N within one second integration per frequency channel.

the aim of this study was to validate the Alternate Current Biosusceptometry (ACB) for monitoring gastric contractions in rats. In vitro data were obtained to establish the relationship between ACB and the strain-gauge (SG) signal amplitude. In vivo experiments were performed on rats with magnetic markers and SGs previously implanted under the gastric serosa. The effects of the prandial state in gastric motility profiles were obtained. The correlation between in vitro signal amplitudes was strong (R = 0.989). The temporal cross-correlation between the ACB and SG signal amplitude was higher in the postprandial than in the fasting state. Irregular signal profiles, low contraction amplitudes, and smaller signal-to-noise ratios explained the poor correlation for fasting-state recordings. The contraction frequencies using ACB were 0.068 +/- 0.007 Hz (postprandial) and 0.058 +/- 0.007 Hz (fasting) and those using SG were 0.066 +/- 0.006 Hz (postprandial) and 0.059 +/- 0.008 Hz (fasting) (P < 0.003). When a magnetic tracer was ingested, there was a strong correlation and a small phase-difference between techniques. We conclude that ACB provides an accurate and sensitive technique for studies of GI motility in the rat.

Syntactic pattern recognition is being used to detect and classify non-metallic landmines in terms of their range impedance discontinuity profile. This profile, extracted from the ground penetrating radar's return signal, constitutes a high-range-resolution and unique description of the inner structure of a landmine. In this paper, we discuss two preprocessing steps necessary to extract such a profile, namely, inverse filtering (deconvolving) and binarization. We validate the use of an inverse filter to effectively decompose the observed composite signal resulting from the different layers of dielectric materials of a landmine. It is demonstrated that the transmitted radar waveform undergoing multiple reflections with different materials does not change appreciably, and mainly depends on the transmit and receive processing chains of the particular radar being used. Then, a new inversion approach for the inverse filter is presented based on the cumulative contribution of the different frequency components to the original Fourier spectrum. We discuss the trade-offs and challenges involved in such a filter design. The purpose of the binarization scheme is to localize the impedance discontinuities in range, by assigning a '1' to the peaks of the inverse filtered output, and '0' to all other values. The paper is concluded with simulation results showing the effectiveness of the proposed preprocessing technique.

Estimating the number of spectral signal sources, denoted by p, in hyperspectral imagery is very challenging due to the fact that many unknown material substances can be uncovered by very high spectral resolution hyperspectral sensors. This paper investigates a recent approach, called maximum orthogonal complement algorithm (MOCA), for this purpose. The MOCA was originally developed by Kuybeda et al. for estimating the rank of a rare vector space in a high-dimensional noisy data space. Interestingly, the idea of the MOCA is essentially derived from the automatic target generation process (ATGP) developed by Ren and Chang. By appropriately interpreting the MOCA in context of the ATGP a potentially useful technique, called maximum orthogonal subspace projection (MOSP) can be further developed where determining a stopping rule for the ATGP turns out to be equivalent to estimating the rank of a rare vector space by the MOCA and the number of targets determined by the stopping rule for the ATGP to generate is the desired value of the parameter p. Furthermore, a Neyman-Pearson detector version of MOCA, NPD-MOCA can be also derived by the MOSP as opposed to the MOCA considered as a Bayes detector. Surprisingly, the MOCA-NPD has very similar design rationale to that of a technique referred to as Harsanyi-Farrand-Chang method that was developed to estimate the virtual dimensionality (VD) which is defined as the p.

The Pulse Transit Time (PTT) is generally assumed to be a good surrogate measure to comfortably track blood pressure (BP) and blood pressure changes. This paper investigates PTT variations for healthy young subjects during a sequence of short-term physical exercises. PTT was measured by two different methodologies having different measurement accuracies as well as underlying assumptions: the total PTT from heart to fingertip and the difference of fingertip and earlobe PTTs. small non consistent changes and very low correlation of both PTTs with systolic blood pressure (SBP) have been observed for the study population (-0.19 +/- 0.45 and 0.22 +/- 0.46). In conclusion, there might be a need for an improved measurement accuracy of the sensors and data processing techniques in use. The applicability of the Moens-Korteweg equation is also questionable for young people having flexible arteries. In this case, significant radius changes do occur in the large arteries during exercise, which might counteract a PTT decrease with the BP elevation. These radius effects are excluded from the Moens-Korteweg model.
