A new non-data-aided signal-to-noise ratio estimator for QPSK modulations in additive white Gaussian noise is proposed. It uses a simplified structure to achieve a good performance with less computational complexity. Simulation results show that the new estimator has smaller bias than existing estimators. The small bias and low computational complexity make it useful for practical applications.

Thales Raytheon Systems' PC Simulation (PCS) tool allows a rapid simulated evaluation of Firefinder radar performance from a personal desktop computer. Firefinder radars are designed to track hostile rocket, artillery and mortar (RAM) projectiles in order to accurately estimate weapon ground location. The Firefinder tactical code is used within PCS. This design provides a low risk path to rapid prototyping and evaluation of candidate software changes. PCS is used to evaluate candidate software changes to the Firefinder. Candidate design changes which perform well in PCS testing require minimum system level checkout before being checked into the tactical software baseline. The PCS tool contains a simulation engine which reads program control information from input data files. The PCS tool also generates and maintains simulated targets and clutter, simulates the radar signal processing function, performs Monte-Carlo “batch” processing, produces complex target trajectories internally or from an input text file and creates simulation data recording files identical in format to those created by the actual radar. This paper summarizes the capabilities of the lastest PCS.

In this paper, a new kind of data acquisition and processing system of portable photoionization detect instrument is introduced. Using the fully integrated mixed signal chip C8051F040 as the micro control unit, this system can realize functions of the double range measurement of the data acquisition, the temperature compensation, the digital display and the serial interface for data sending. The design of double range measurement circuit and the design of the temperature compensation circuit are described in detail. This system has many advantages, such as high integration, small in size, low power dissipation, easy operation and wide application scope, etc.

Limited by the cost, the size of multibeam bathymetric sonar becomes smaller. It is a significant issue to increase the beamforming capability of small aperture array. As the most commonly used method at present, virtual aperture technique together with LPAE beamforming method is discussed in detail in the paper. Compared with conventional beamforming method through theoretical analysis and computer simulation, LPAE beamforming has better performance for higher SNR, narrower receiving beams, and better resolution ability on nearly spaced goals. This method is proved to be effective, practical and superior by the processed results recorded with multibeam sonar sea trial data.

This paper deals with the problem of estimating of the number of coherent narrowband signals impinging on the L-shaped sensor array, which is composed of two uniform linear arrays (ULAs) connected orthogonally at the one end of each ULA. An efficient detection method is proposed for the incident signals without the computationally burdensome eigendecomposition, where the number of incident signals is revealed as the rank of a combined matrix formed by the cross-correlations between the array data along two ULAs. Then a ratio criterion is presented in term of the row elements of QR upper-triangular factor of the autoproduct of the combined cross-correlation matrix, and the number of signals is determined as the value of the running index for which this criterion is maximized. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through numerical examples, and the simulation results show that the proposed method performs well in estimating the number of signals with small angular separation at relatively low signal-to-noise (SNR) and/or with a small number of snapshots.

The design realized the surface EMG detection device which is based on DSP. This device is made up of analog part, data acquisition and processing part and PC-display part. Analog part consists of amplification and filtering; Acquisition part is made up of DSP and AD976. Completed the multi-channel A/D conversion, serial communication and the corresponding parts of the software design. The system has the characteristics of anti-jamming ability, low power consumption, small size and high cost performance, meets the present trend of the development of portable devices.

In wildlife radio tagging, small radio transmitters attached to animals are located by human operators using directional antennas and analog receivers which provide audio output. The location of the transmitter is determined by listening to the signal and scanning the area while closing in. This procedure can be very tedious, especially in rough terrain. Searching radio tags with autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offers a number of advantages, including better line-of-sight signal reception, terrain-independence and faster localization. In this paper we continue upon previous work by presenting a received-signal-strength (RSS) sensor implementation based on a modified commercial wildlife tracking receiver that is designed to operate on an autonomous fixed-wing UAV. Furthermore, an extension of the search and tracking framework for multiple targets that are undistinguishable from the sensors' point of view is proposed. After a brief system overview and a summary of the particle filter based approach, the signal processing theory and realization of the RSS sensor are outlined, including strategies for frequency tracking and receiver gain control. The paper also presents experimental results.

A convoy is defined as a group of vehicles traveling together for mutual support and protection. It constitutes an object of high military interest in the context of the situation assessment. However, it is a challenging task to track and evaluate because convoy targets are very close of each other. In this view, the Onera recently developed a new two step convoy detection process. The first is an original tracking algorithm appropriate for Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) data based on the hybridization of two classical multitarget tracking algorithms, and adapted to closely spaced target tracking. Then, by using algorithm outputs and other data, vehicle aggregates are detected and their characteristics are introduced into a Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) which processes the probability for an aggregate to be a convoy. This process gives encourageous results with simulated data. In this paper, we validate this process by showing real data results.

In recent years, several surveillance sonar systems have been developed to detect intruders in difficult conditions of coastal waters like ports and harbors. Because man-made noise and reverberation from the bottom and surface are significant in shallow water, the detection process must remove this influence to be robust. Moreover, underwater static objects have strong reflection characteristics, and their echo signal can vary over time. These static objects behave as if they were low-speed, maneuvering, targets like divers. Therefore, they can cause numerous false alarms. These challenges make it difficult to realize an effective sonar-ADT (Automatic target Detection and Tracking) for shallow-coastal harbours. Starting in 2009, our group at the University of Tokyo has developed advanced ADT-techniques that reduces false alarms and improves detection performance using an interferometric method, and delivers improved target-tracking performance under difficult SNR conditions using an original stochastic framework In April 2010, RESON and the University of Tokyo started a collaborative study for automatic data processing techniques dedicated to surveillance sonars. In this paper, we present an overview of the collaborative research project and the current R&D status. Based on the result of our studies and development, we present the results of newly developed ADT techniques that significantly decrease the false alarm rate. We also present improvement of the tracking performance which is influenced by the fluctuations of the underwater target signal using our R&D techniques.
