The Stevens Passive Acoustic System allows the detection, tracking and classification of various surface and underwater sources of sound including surface vessels, swimmers, various types of divers, and unmanned underwater vehicles. This system was developed by Stevens in its Maritime Security Laboratory, which was established to support research in the area of Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection. The focus of this lab has been the persistent detection and classification of threats posed by surface and subsurface intruders utilizing a multiplicity of technologies. Using these capabilities, we have investigated the set of acoustic parameters fundamental to underwater acoustic threat detection, including diver acoustic signatures, acoustic transmission loss, and acoustic environmental noise. The Stevens Passive Acoustic System has successfully demonstrated surface ship detection and classification. The system provides simultaneous acquisition and analysis of acoustical signals using 4 hydrophones. The analysis functions includes arbitrary digital filtering, spectral analysis and cross-correlation for simultaneous processing of signals from several hydrophones, acoustical source separation, and determination of bearing for different targets relative to the central underwater mooring. The system also records and stores the complete raw acoustical data set, enabling further research and analysis of the acoustic signals. Novel acoustic methods of signal processing used in the system include: 1. Method of precise hydrophone localization. 2. Cross-correlation method for target bearing determination 3. Cross-correlation methods for extraction of target signatures from numerous sources. 4. Feature-based automated diver detection algorithm. 5. Measurements of the ship noise modulation spectrum that is related to propeller and shaft rotation (Detection of Envelope Modulation on Noise - DEMON method). The Stevens Passive Acoustic System has been used in tests in the Hudson River

The data collected through high densely distributed wireless sensor networks is *** asymmetry between the data acquisition and information processing makes a great challenge to the restriction of energy and computation consumption of the sensor nodes,and it limits the application of wireless sensor ***,the recent works show that compressed sensing can break through this limitation of *** sensing is an emerging theory that is based on the fact that a signal can be recovered through a relatively small number of random projections which contain most of its salient *** this paper,we introduce the background of compressive sensing,and then applications of compressed sensing in wireless sensor networks are presented.

Waveform signals of earthquake and explosion are nonlinear and non-stationary. A BP (Back-Propagation) neural network model is established to simulate the waveform signal of the earthquake and explosion based upon the real wave data on the Matlab 7.0 experiment platform. It is shown that the differences between the waveform signal simulated by BP neural network and the real waveform signal are quite small. The error percentage of earthquake calculated by the formula 100 %×( predicted value- original value)/ original value is less than 1.5% and the error percentage of explosion is less than 1%. The waveform signal simulated by the model can highly correctly reproduce waveform signal's characters of the real earthquake and explosion. This provides a potential way to extract discriminative features of earthquake and explosion by means of network type, network model parameters and network structure. So, it highly deserves further researches.

LTE-Advanced extends the number of transmit antennas of evolved NodeB (eNB) up to 8, which will provide substantial spatial degrees of freedom. However, the user is usually equipped with a small number of antennas due to space constraints. Thus, multi-user beamforming (MU-BF) was proposed to dramatically boost the spectrum efficiency by transmitting multiple users' data on the same time-frequency resource. The co-channel interference (CCI) among users scheduled on the same resource can be eliminated by block diagonalization (BD); however, the performance of downlink MU-BF with BD relies on the accuracy of channel estimation to a great extent. Therefore, the effect of imperfect channel estimation on MU-BF for the downlink of LTE-Advanced system is studied in this paper. The reference signal targeting data demodulation (DM-RS) and uplink sounding reference signal (SRS) for deriving the downlink channel in TDD system are considered with different error models respectively. The estimation errors are modeled through link level simulations. It is shown that the imperfect SRS and DM-RS channels degrade the system performance in different degree through system level simulation.

@@ All-optical buffer memories are desirable as key elements of all-optical packet-switched networks that address the contention and congestion of optical packets with high-operation data rates and low-power consumption. Optical buffer memories consisting of flip-flop devices [1] have a great advantage that the data stored can be read out at arbitrary timings. We previously proposed an optical buffer memory with shift register function consisting of a two-dimensional array of polarization bistable VCSELs [1]. Each polarization bistable VCSEL acts as a 1-bit flip-flop memory with small optical input power and dc power consumption.

In this article we present some results of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) studies carried out at Lapa do Santo archaeological site. This cave is within Lagoa Santa karstic region, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. In the first field work, 44 GPR profiles were acquired with 100 MHz, 200 MHz, and 400 MHz shielded antennas focusing on three mains objectives: (i) to characterize stratigraphic layer; (ii) to identify geological and archaeological anomalies, and (iii) to identify potential areas aiming at assisting archaeologists in an excavation program. GPR results indicated anomalous hyperbolic reflections, and areas with high sub-horizontal reflection amplitude suggesting archaeological and geological potential targets, respectively. These results were encouraging, and then they were used to guide excavations at this site. Excavation of test units (meter by meter) allowed identifying an anthropogenic feature, e.g., a fire hearth structure, and natural features, such as speleothems and top of bedrock. Results also indicated the importance of GPR survey as a tool for orienting archaeological researches, increasing the probability of finding archaeological interest targets in an excavation program an area of environmental protection.

With our interest to enable beamforming and beam-steering for ultra wideband systems, necessary investigations in the time domain were performed to obtain this goal. We focus on small wideband antennas which can be arranged linear in an array, without consuming much space. In the past we have made time domain measurements in an office scenario and in an anechoic chamber at Bristol University. Within this paper we will present the inverse Fourier transformation of the measured data in Bristol. In the time domain, the characteristics of an ultra wideband impulse radio antenna array are depicted and analyzed in this paper.

Recently, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) is widely applied in protecting and archiving historical architecture because it can obtain accurate and dense 3D points. Simultaneously, advanced database management platform supports spatial and attribute data, it is essential to historical architecture representation and data dissemination. So, it is possible to describe historical architecture thanks to the combination of database and TLS technology. In this work, we described detailedly field data acquisition and data process, provided the method that the registration of multi-station point clouds by the corresponding targets which is with common reference coordinate and TLS local coordinate. In addition, the database is adopted to achieve data management and conservation because mass spatial data and attribute data including point clouds data, control points data, image data, texture data, and other text files were obtained in the experiment. The result shows that TLS and above-mentioned methods in the digital protection of historic architecture are feasible.

This paper investigates the system requirements and signal processing tools for a semi-autonomous passive acoustic boat detection framework for monitoring marine environments. The objective is to develop a surveillance system which provides wide area coverage, automatic (boat) detection, and ultimately the ability to communicate real-time alerts (i.e., a bell-ringer system). A critical challenge for a successful system is the ability to accurately detect (and possibly classify) targets in the presence of noise. A wavelet detection algorithm has been developed to identify the presence of a boat in acoustic signals overwhelmed by noise from snapping shrimp and humpback whales. A feature extraction tool is introduced to examine the harmonically related structures in shipping noise. These methods are applied on acoustic data collected in a series of field tests in Hawaii, in which small-scale sensor networks were deployed near Marine Protected Areas (MPA) to assess the ability to monitor boat activity. A simulation tool developed based on Bellhop is introduced to study boat signatures under different environmental conditions.

Modern Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are capable of performing complex discrete signal processing algorithms with clock rates above 100 MHz. This combined with FPGA's low expense, ease of use, and selected dedicated hardware make them an ideal technology for a data acquisition system for a positron emission tomography (PET) scanner. The University of Washington is producing a high-resolution, small-animal PET scanner that utilizes FPGAs as the core of the front-end electronics. For this next generation scanner, functions that are typically performed in dedicated circuits, or offline, are being migrated to the FPGA. This will not only simplify the electronics, but the features of modern FPGAs can be utilizes to add significant signal processing power to produce higher resolution images. In this paper we report on an all-digital pulse pileup correction algorithm that is being developed for the FPGA. The pileup mitigation algorithm will allow the scanner to run at higher count rates without incurring large data losses due to the overlapping of scintillation signals. This correction technique utilizes a reference pulse to extract timing and energy information for most pileup events. Using pulses were acquired from a Zecotech Photonics MAPDN with an LFS-3 scintillator, we show that good timing and energy information can be achieved in the presence of pileup.
