Conventional optical proximity correction (OPC) tools aim to minimize edge placement errors (EPE) due to the optical and resist process by moving mask edges. However, in low-k1 lithography, especially at 45 nm and beyond, printing perfect polygons is practically impossible to achieve. In addition, prohibitively high mask complexity is incurred, leading to high mask cost. Given the impossibility of perfect printing, we argue that aiming to reduce the error of electrical discrepancy between the ideal and the printed contours is a more reasonable strategy. In fact, we show that contours with non-minimal EPE may result in closer match to the desired electrical performance. Towards achieving this objective, we developed a new electrically driven OPC (ED-OPC) algorithm. The tool combines lithography simulation with accurate electrical modeling of resist contours to predict the on/off current through a transistor gate. The computation of mask edge movements is cast as a linear program based on optical and electrical sensitivities. The objective is to minimize the error in saturation current between printed and target shapes. This optimization is then solved with fast runtime. The results on industrial 45 nm SOI layouts using high-NA immersion lithography models show up to a 5% improvement in accuracy of timing over conventional OPC. This is achieved at less than 26% runtime overheads, while also lowering mask complexity by up to 43%. The results confirm that better timing accuracy can be achieved despite larger edge placement error.

Laser- and particle beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerators produce accelerating fields thousands of times higher than radio-frequency accelerators, offering compactness and ultrafast bunches to extend the frontiers of high energy physics and to enable laboratory-scale radiation sources. Large-scale kinetic simulations provide essential understanding of accelerator physics to advance beam performance and stability and show and predict the physics behind recent demonstration of narrow energy spread bunches. Benchmarking between codes is establishing validity of the models used and, by testing new reduced models, is extending the reach of simulations to cover upcoming meter-scale multi-GeV experiments. This includes new models that exploit Lorentz boosted simulation frames to speed calculations. simulations of experiments showed that recently demonstrated plasma gradient injection of electrons can be used as an injector to increase beam quality by orders of magnitude. simulations are now also modeling accelerator stages of tens of GeV, staging of modules, and new positron sources to design next-generation experiments and to use in applications in high energy physics and light sources. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this paper, a new data-driven model predictive control (MPC) is considered based on a bilinear subspace method. Being a subclass of nonlinear systems, bilinear system is useful to approximate a class of nonlinear systems and implement predictive control in many circumstances. Therefore, a bilinear predictive control is implemented by exploiting the structural properties of the identified bilinear subspace predictor model. The open-loop optimization problem of MPC that is nonlinear in nature is solved with series quadratic programming (SQP) without any approximations. These improvements in system modeling and optimization solver make the bilinear subspace MPC approach more applicable to real industry processes. Finally, the proposed control approach is illustrated with a simulation of a nonlinear continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system.

The number of motor vehicles powered by internal combustion engines keeps growing despite shrinking oil reserves. As a result, compressed natural gas (CNG) is gaining currency as an emerging combustion engine fuel. To this day, CNG systems - e.g., in passenger cars - are not fully integrated into the development process as conducted by vehicle or engine manufacturers. Instead, they are usually "adapted in" at a downstream stage by small, specialized companies. The present paper initially outlines the state of the art in advanced gas injection technologies. Especially the development towards sequential injection systems is described. A pressure regulator for CNG driven combustion engines is examined in detail, given its role as a highly sensitive and critical system component. Based on a precise theoretical analysis, a linear model of this pressure regulator is derived and subjected to dynamic simulation. The analytical approach is accompanied by an experimental investigation of the device. On a test rig developed at the Trier University of Applied Sciences, the static and dynamic features of the pressure regulator can be measured with the requisite precision. The comparison of measured and simulated data yields a validation of the dynamic simulation model. With the approaches developed it is now possible for the first time to model, simulate and optimize single- or multi-stage pressure regulators for CNG driven engines with less effort and higher accuracy.

Model-based hotspot detection and silicon-aware parametric analysis help designers optimize their chips for yield, area and performance without the high cost of applying foundries' recommended design rules. This set of DFM/ recommended rules is primarily litho-driven, but cannot guarantee a manufacturable design without imposing overly 14 restrictive design requirements. This rule-based methodology of making design decisions based on idealized polygons that no longer represent what is on silicon needs to be replaced. Using model-based simulation of the lithography, OPC, RET and etch effects, followed by electrical evaluation of the resulting shapes, leads to a more realistic and accurate analysis. This analysis can be used to evaluate intelligent design trade-offs and identify potential failures due to systematic manufacturing defects during the design phase.

This paper presents the idea of modeling transparent network simulations to realize the communication system by using interactive network simulation technology. An interactive network simulation can be built based on high level architecture (HLA). With the "software bus" run time infrastructure (RTI), users could operate the discrete-event-driven simulators while simulation is running. In these cases, users may not even distinguish themselves in a simulation environment. With HLA, we could conquer the shortcoming that the traditional discrete-event-driven simulation software could only simulate network models with fixed or simple random parameters, and therefore maximize the similarity between the simulation and the real networks

Based on reinforcement learning, an adaptive online optimization algorithm of time-out policy is presented for dynamic power management. First the time-out policy driven power-managed systems are formulated as semi-Markov control processes. Under this analytic model, the equivalent effect on performance-power trade-off of time-out and stochastic policies is probed, and the equivalent relation between these two types policies is derived. Then an adaptive optimization algorithm that combines gradient estimation online and stochastic approximation is proposed. This algorithm doesn't depend on the prior knowledge of system parameters, and can achieve a global optimum with less computational cost. simulation results demonstrate the analytic results and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Agility, speed and flexibility in production networks are required in today's global competition in the flat world. The accuracy of order date delivery promises is a key element in customer satisfaction. Agile production needs a management and evaluation tool for production changes. Discrete event simulation, DES, has mainly been used as a production system analysis tool, to evaluate new production system concepts, layout and control logic. DES can be used for operational planning as well, as shown in the paper. The simulation analysis gives a forecast of the future with given input values, thus production managers have time to react to potential problems and evaluate alternatives. A balance between multiple parallel customer orders and finite resources can be found. The authors are developing a system design evaluation method and also a decision support system for production managers. Two case studies with different approaches are described in the paper.
