Summary form only given. An enhancement of energy conversion of the pulsed power source into the radiation from the Z-pinch plasma, and shaping of radiation pulses from a compact (in comparison with a cavity dimension) driver is critical for the Z-pinch driven ICF. A planar wire array placed in the center of the Z-pinch chamber was found to be an interesting for these problems resolution. Recently, experiments with single and double planar arrays (SPA and DPA) from Al, Cu, Mo, and W wires have been performed on the 1 MA Zebra generator at the UNR. The diagnostics include X-ray/EUV diodes, bolometer, time-gated and -integrated X-ray spectrometers and pinhole cameras. In the SPA wires were mounted in a one linear row. The DPA includes two parallel rows with an inter-row gap (2-6 mm) smaller than an array width (5-10 mm). The SPA and DPA can be more compact than cylindrical arrays. The DPA more capable than SPA to shaping an X-ray pulse by changing geometry and material. The DPA imploded even with different material in rows (one row-Al and another-Mo). A scaling of arrays performance with width, material, mass, wire numbers, inter-wire and -row gaps was studied. Hot spots play a significant role not only in a final implosion, but also during an early plasma formation. Non-LTE kinetic modeling of X-ray spectra provided time-and spatially-resolved plasma parameters: Te of 1.3 keV and Ne of 10 21 cm -3 was observed in hot spots (the Mo SPA.) A comparison with conventional and compact cylindrical arrays is discussed. The total radiation yield (19 kJ and 24 kJ from Mo SPA and DPA, respectively) exceeds the inductive energy change at least by a factor of 4-5. Observed strong small scale plasma inhomogeneity indicates a resistivity of such a plasma as a possible energy coupling mechanism. Wire dynamics model was developed to calculate the implosion dynamics. The 2D (x,y) imploding plasma layer model is used to simulate the radiation yield.

This paper presents an approach that makes numerical simulation and optimization an integral part of the product development life cycle wherein mathematical modeling, simulation and optimization form the basis of decision making at every step in the product development cycle. Here, we present a process architecture that tightly couples digital simulation and multi-disciplinary optimization with the product development cycles and helps in design innovations. This method integrates CAD, CAE and numerical optimization inside a single system resulting in "first time right" and manufacturability of design, thereby reducing the cycle time significantly. This also ensures optimized product variants aimed at meeting specific set of customer requirements as an outcome of the integrated development process.

An approach for modeling and simulation of user-perceived quality of services in hybrid (broadcast and telecommunication) networks is presented in this paper. The term "user-perceived quality of service" goes beyond the QoS concepts for packet based end-to-end communication. Rather, the service and the information transmitted by such a service will be modeled at a more abstract, semantic level. General components of user-perceived QoS will be defined. However, the technical QoS parameters of different parts of hybrid networks may contribute to this user-perceived QoS model as well as application specific characteristics, client terminal features or user profiles. A use-case driven modeling methodology is introduced which leads to simulation models applicable to simulation experiments for characterization and optimization of services in hybrid networks from a user's QoS perspective. As an example, user-perceived QoS of a data service in digital TV will be simulated with OMNeT++. © 2006 IEEE.

We report on two ongoing efforts to build dynamic data driven application systems (DDDAS) for (1) short-range forecasting of weather and wildfire behavior from real time weather data, images, and sensor streams, and (2) contaminant identification and tracking in water bodies. Both systems change their forecasts as new data is received. We use one long term running simulation that self corrects using out of order, imperfect sensor data. The DDDAS versions replace codes that were previously run using data only in initial conditions. DDDAS entails the ability to dynamically incorporate additional data into an executing application, and in reverse, the ability of an application to dynamically steer the measurement process

A framework of security-constrained adequacy evaluation (SCAE) based on analytical techniques is proposed to assess the ability of a bulk power system to supply electric load while satisfying security constraints. It encompasses three main steps: (a) critical contingency selection, (b) effects analysis, and (c) reliability index computation. Effects analysis is the most essential but computationally demanding procedure. It is important that effects analysis simulate contingencies in a realistic manner efficiently. However, effects analysis based on the traditional power flow technology often lacks the realistic system model and diverges when the system is severely stressed. In this paper, a non-divergent optimal quadratized power flow (NDOQPF) algorithm is proposed for effects analysis. It is implemented based on a single phase quadratized power flow (SPQPF) model that can improve solution efficiency, and a constrained optimization problem, which incorporates operational practices, security constraints, and remedial actions, is formulated to simulate contingencies realistically. The non-divergence of power flow is achieved by introducing fictitious bus injections that are driven to zero as the solution progresses. It guarantees convergence if a solution exists; if a solution does not exist, it provides a suboptimal solution that may include load shedding. The NDOQPF algorithm is capable of efficiently solving the RTO/ISO operational model as well. Such operational procedure is formulated as an optimization problem with the objective function being the bid cost function and congestion constraints. The proposed SCAE framework also includes an improved contingency selection/enumeration scheme based on SPQPF and reliability index computations.
