There is promise of efficiency gains in simulator-in-the-loop analog circuit optimization if one uses numerical performance modeling on simulation data to relate design parameters to performance values. However, the choice of modeling approach can impact performance. We analyze and compare these approaches: polynomials, posynomials, genetic programming, feedforward neural networks, boosted feedforward neural networks, multivariate adaptive regression splines, support vector machines, and kriging. Experiments are conducted on a dataset used previously for posynomial modeling, showing the strengths and weaknesses of the different methods in the context of circuit optimization.

The temperature driven gas flow in a two-dimensional finite length microchannel and a cylindrical tube are studied numerically with the goal of performance optimization of a nanomembrane-based Knudsen compressor The numerical solutions are obtained using direct simulation Monte Carlo method and discrete ordinate method for BGK model kinetic equation in a wide range of Knudsen numbers from 0.05 to 50. The length-to-height ratios front 5 to 30 were examined. Three different wall temperature distributions were considered, namely, linear step-wise, and a non-monotonic profile typical for a radiantly heated Knudsen compressor membrane. The short channel end effects are characterized, and the sensitivity of the mass flow rate to a non-monotonic temperature distribution is shown.

In prospecting it is a great concern to find how deep the groundwater level is below the ground surface without real drilling. This paper is a simulation study of determining the groundwater level from the electrical impedance data measured on the ground surface. We have developed a software to calculate the grounding (earthing) impedance of an electrode driven into the ground, based on the charge simulation modeling. This is the case of a single electrode while the counter electrode is assumed present at the infinite place. Modification is made for the case of a multiple electrodes. This can be achieved by providing superposition in symmetric arrangement or an additional equation set for charge equilibrium. For the present simulation, there are two layers assumed and the second layer is groundwater of infinite thickness. The electrical impedance or the resistance depends on the conductivity and the thickness of the first layer, and the conductivity of the second layer. They are taken as variable parameters. The identification is achieved as an optimization process in which the error norm of the electrical impedance (difference between the "measured" and the estimated) is minimized for the parameters. Newton's method is used for the optimization.

A cable-driven parallel mechanism (CDPM) possesses a number of promising advantages over the conventional rigid-link mechanisms, such as simple and light-weight mechanical structure, high-loading capacity, and large workspace. However, the formulations and results obtained for the rigid-link mechanisms cannot be directly applied to CDPMs due to the unilateral property of cables. For a CDPM, dynamic formulation is only valid as actuators exert positive torques. In this paper, cable winding method is studied as it improves the whole dynamic performance of the system. This is followed by dynamic formulation. A generic approach based on dimension reduction technique, which is successfully implemented through a computationally effective recursive algorithm, is proposed to check the existence of positive torques. Since torque optimization problem is modeled in a standard linear programming form, the optimal solution can be efficiently obtained. Two simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution approach

The paper presents the solution of models of machines with a moment characteristics of asynchronous or direct current motors that be parts of machine systems. Machine is compiled with a driving motor, gearbox, mechanisms, kinematics bonds, control elements and driven machine. The equations of motion of machine are in most cases systems of non-linear algebraic-differential equations. The reason for nonlinear equations is non-linearity of kinematical bonds, passive resistances, dampers or elastic elements. Their analytic solution is limited to few exceptional incidents. In research description of non-linear systems it is necessary using numerical methods in connection with computer systems. Compared to other possible software products Matlab appeared to be the most successful for teaching.

Market simulation is an essential approach for providing insights into the behavior of complicated power systems and volatile electricity markets. By performing transmission and security-constrained optimization of the system resources against spatially distributed loads, market simulation tools can produce realistic projection of market clearing prices and asset utilization levels across the transmission grid. This paper presents a method for incorporating inter-market bilateral transactions into regional market simulation. The proposed method is capable and flexible for the modeling of pre-scheduled and economic-driven interchanges across the markers or control areas on a broader regional scope. Numerical examples based on a simple test system are provided to illustrate the concepts and algorithms. The proposed methodology is then applied to a real regional electric market simulation analysis of the Northeast US system based on publicly available transmission, generation, and demand data.

A fuzzy model predictive control strategy for active power filter is presented in this paper. In the strategy, T-S fuzzy model is employed to predict future harmonic compensating current. The fuzzy model is derived from input-output data by means of product-space fuzzy clustering. In order to make the fuzzy model compact and accurate, similarity driven rule base simplification is applied to detect and merge compatible fuzzy sets in the model and a new validity measure is proposed to determine appropriate number of the clusters. Based on the model output, branch-and-bound optimization method is adopted to produce proper value of control vector, this value is adequately modulated by means of a space vector PWM modulator which generate proper gating patterns of the inverter switches to maintain tracking of reference current. The fuzzy model predictive algorithm is used in internal model control scheme to compensate for process disturbances, measurement noise and modeling errors. The proposed control is applied to compensate the harmonic produced by the variable non-linear load. simulation results show the fuzzy model based predictive controller is effective and feasible.

Alternating Current excitation generators (ACEG) can adjust the active power and inactive power flexibly and improve the stability of power system. The key to enhance the power system's stability is to choose appropriate ACEG's excitation control method. Conventional excitation controllers are unable to perform optimally over the full range of operation conditions and disturbances, due to the highly complex, non-linear nature of power systems. In this paper, Fuzzy model predictive control is proposed to cope with the problem. T-S fuzzy model is employed to appropriate the non-linear object. The fuzzy model is derived from input-output data by means of product-space fuzzy clustering, similarity driven rule base simplification is applied to detect and merges compatible fuzzy sets in the model and a new validity measure is adopted to determine the number of clusters. All these techniques make the fuzzy model transparent and accurate. The critical element in fuzzy model predictive control is the nonconvex optimization problem, iterative optimization techniques are mostly slow due to computational complexity, this hamper its application to fast system. In order to solve the problem, Branch-and-bound optimization method is adopted. The fuzzy model predictive algorithm is used in internal model control scheme to compensate for process disturbances, measurement noise and modeling errors. simulation test under large disturbance at various operating points is made. The results show the fuzzy model based predictive controller is effective and feasible. It performs well over a wide range of system disturbance and improves dynamic characteristic of ACEG system.

A novel methodology that combines recent advances in computational statistics and reduced-order modeling is presented to explore the application of Bayesian statistical inference to a stochastic inverse problem in radiative heat transfer. The underlying objective of this work is to reveal the potential of using statistical approaches, mainly Bayesian computational statistics and spatial statistics, to solve data-driven stochastic optimization and uncertainty quantification problems raised in various complex continuum system design and control applications when the robustness and reliability requirements are critical. In this work, an unknown transient heat source in a three-dimensional participating medium is reconstructed from the temperature measurements. The heat source is modeled as a stochastic process, of which the joint posterior probability density function (PPDF) is computed using the Bayes' formula. Random errors in thermocouple readings are modeled as Gauss random variables. 'Maximum A Posteriori' (MAP) and posterior mean estimates of the heat source are then computed. A Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampler composed of a cycle of symmetric MCMC kernels is designed to explore the posterior state space numerically. To expedite the sampling speed, a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) based reduced order modeling technique is used in the likelihood computation. Typical heat source profiles are reconstructed using the simulated data to demonstrate the presented methodology. The results indicate that the Bayesian inference method can provide accurate point estimates as well as uncertainty quantification to the solution of the inverse radiation problem.
