We present a compact and scalable model for on-chip transformers fabricated in silicon IC technology. The model is driven from the layout and the process technology specifications. It is suitable for design optimization and circuit simulation. EM-simulation is used to validate the model. The proposed model shows excellent agreement with EM-simulation over a large frequency range (1-15 GHz).

simulations of distributed information enterprises using the DIEMS framework were performed on HPC clusters and SMP machines. The simulation results were analyzed with respect to the computation time involved in each process, the number of times processes were executed, the number of simulation rollbacks invoked during each simulation, simulation overhead, and the total wall clock time used to perform the simulation. The analysis identified several performance limitations and bottlenecks. One critical limitation addressed and eliminated was simultaneously mixing a periodic process model with an event driven model causing rollbacks. The second major factor limiting performance on cluster based systems was the cross-node communication. An optimization technique that exploits the knowledge of the publication and subscription paradigm of the information architecture being simulated was developed. This paper describes the simulation analysis, the modifications to the simulation models, the development of an optimization technique, and the impact of the code improvements on simulation performance.

Market simulation is an essential approach for providing insights into the behavior of complicated power systems and volatile electricity markets. By performing transmission and security-constrained optimization of the system resources against spatially distributed loads, market simulation tools can produce realistic projection of market clearing prices and asset utilization levels across the transmission grid. This paper presents a method for incorporating inter-market bilateral transactions into regional market simulation. The proposed method is capable and flexible for the modeling of pre-scheduled and economic-driven interchanges across the markers or control areas on a broader regional scope. Numerical examples based on a simple test system are provided to illustrate the concepts and algorithms. The proposed methodology is then applied to a real regional electric market simulation analysis of the Northeast US system based on publicly available transmission, generation, and demand data.

In order to reduce analog systems development time, in particular sampled ones, we propose in this article a design method based on behavioral modeling. The method uses a hierarchical "top-down" constraints driven approach. To calculate the design constraints, the "programming by flexible constraints CSPf" method is used. Validation of the approach is made on a sensor interface based on a delta sigma modulator.

Stottler Henke has developed and continues to enhance the Intelligent Network Configuration optimization Toolkit (INCOT) for the USA air force. INCOT's goal is to provide an intelligent tool to allow for the rapid design and optimization of communication networks driven by user requirements, while eliminating the need to have knowledge of a complex network simulation product, such as OPNET Modeler. There is currently a great need for a solution that dramatically reduces the complexity of network configurations for rapid field deployment. By incorporating expert knowledge of network engineering, policies, available components and their characteristics, INCOT provides an interactive goal-driven rapid design tool. The user is led through the network design process via a step-by-step requirements-driven hierarchical workflow that automates much of the low-level details of network design. INCOT interfaces with OPNET products (e.g., Modeler) as well as NETWARS and TNAPS+. For example, INCOT can automatically lay out all the network components in OPNET Modeler or NETWARS. INCOT also includes a stand-alone TNAPS+ translator so TNAPS+ networks can be brought into OPNET tools or NETWARS for further analysis. INCOT is an open system and includes a powerful visual authoring tool that allows network experts to enhance INCOT's logic, automations, policies and constraints. The authoring tool supports complex logic, algorithms and procedures to analyze data in order to drive appropriate actions. For example, with INCOT's visual authoring tool an expert can author classified logic, policies and constraints. INCOT is extending the power of network simulation tools, such as OPNET Modeler, NETWARS and TNAPS+, while simplifying its operation for the air force and other DoD network engineers, thus allowing less experienced network engineers to perform efficient and effective network engineering. INCOT is available now and is free to anyone in the DoD.

The need to minimize fan noise radiation from commercial aircraft engine nacelles continues to provide an impetus for developing new acoustic liner concepts. If the full value of such concepts is to be attained, an understanding of grazing flow effects is crucial. Because of this need for improved understanding of grazing flow effects, the NASA Langley Research Center Liner Physics Group has invested a large effort over the past decade into the development of a 2-D finite element method that characterizes wave propagation through a lined duct. The original test section in the Langley Grazing Incidence Tube was used to acquire data needed for implementation of this finite element method. This test section employed a stepper motor-driven axial-traversing bar, embedded in the wall opposite the test liner, to position a flush-mounted microphone at pre-selected locations. Complex acoustic pressure data acquired with this traversing microphone were used to educe the acoustic impedance of test liners using this 2-D finite element method and a local optimization technique. Results acquired in this facility have been extensively reported, and were compared with corresponding results from various U.S. aeroacoustics laboratories in the late 1990's. Impedance data comparisons acquired from this multi-laboratory study suggested that it would be valuable to incorporate more realistic 3-D aeroacoustic effects into the impedance eduction methodology. This paper provides a description of modifications that have been implemented to facilitate studies of 3-D effects. The two key features of the modified test section are (1) the replacement of the traversing bar and its flush-mounted microphone with an array of 95 fixed-location microphones that are flush-mounted in all four walls of the duct, and (2) the inclusion of a suction device to modify the boundary layer upstream of the lined portion of the duct. Many simulation experiments require much computer time, so they necessitate interpolation for sensitivity analysis and optimization. The interpolating functions are 'metamodels' (or 'response surfaces') of the underlying simulation models. Classic methods combine low-order polynomial regression analysis with fractional factorial designs. Modern Kriging provides 'exact' interpolation, i.e., predicted output values at inputs already observed equal the simulated output values. Such interpolation is attractive in deterministic simulation, and is often applied in computer aided engineering. In discrete-event simulation, however, Kriging has just started. Methodologically, a Kriging metamodel covers the whole experimental area; i.e., it is global (not local). Kriging often gives better global predictions than regression analysis. Technically, Kriging gives more weight to 'neighboring' observations. To estimate the Kriging metamodel, space filling designs are used; for example, latin hypercube sampling (LHS). This paper also presents novel, customized (application driven) sequential designs based on cross-validation and bootstrapping.

It has been observed that even highly optimized software programs perform "redundant" computations during their execution, due to the nature (statistics) of the values assumed by input or internal program variables. For embedded software running on battery-powered systems, such computations can be viewed as unnecessary energy overheads, and hence represent opportunities for improvement in energy efficiency. We present a systematic methodology to identify and eliminate redundancies in the computations performed by embedded software programs, by exploiting opportunities that dynamically arise for computation reuse. We report the results of experiments on two different embedded systems-a detailed simulation model of Fujitsu SPARClite based embedded system, and actual current measurements on al Compaq iPAQ PDA. Our results demonstrate that the proposed technique can reduce energy by up to 46.9% (average of 21.2% and 13.9% for the SPARClite based system and the iPAQ, respectively) while simultaneously improving performance by up to 45.8% (average of 20.7% and 16.8% for the SPARClite based system and the iPAQ, respectively), compared to well-optimized programs that do not employ such a technique.

We present an approach to multi-objective exploration of the mapping space of a mesh-based network-on-chip architecture. Based on evolutionary computing techniques, the approach is an efficient and accurate way to obtain the Pareto mappings that optimize performance and power consumption. Integration of the approach in an exploration framework with a kernel based on an event-driven trace-based simulator makes it possible to take account of important dynamic effects that have a great impact on mapping. Validation on both synthesized traffic and real applications (an MPEG-2 encoder/decoder system) confirms the efficiency, accuracy and scalability of the approach.

We have tried to optimize operator headcounts in the final test process of a one-chip microcomputer using a VLSI test process simulator with human factor to reply to an employment issue of how many new workers should be hired. The assumed final test process of a one-chip micro-computer has nine test flows that consists of fourteen stages at most. We select tasks for change kit exchanges and machine troubles as those required for a learning process. We simulate the work performance of newly hired workers by using the hyperbolic function with three parameters as a functional model of individual learning. According to the work performance value, we divide the learning process into three stages. The learning process for each stage differs according to relationships with expert workers. Our implemented event-driven simulator includes both processing-related and cost-related parameters. simulations for two years were carried out for about total 2,400 lots/month. Result suggests that the manufacturing manager should hire new workers so that the ratio between newly hired and expert workers is about 1:2.
