The ProModel optimization Suite is a powerful yet easy-to-use simulation tool for modeling all types of manufacturing systems ranging from small job shops and machining cells to large mass production, flexible manufacturing systems, and supply chain systems. ProModel is a Windows based system with an intuitive graphical interface and object-oriented modeling constructs that eliminate the need for programming. It combines the flexibility of a general-purpose simulation language with the convenience of a data-driven simulator. In addition, ProModel utilizes an optimization tool called SimRunner that performs sophisticated 'what-if' analysis by running automatic factorial design of experiments on the model, providing the best answer possible. This paper provides an overview of the ProModel optimization Suite and presents its modeling, analysis, and optimization capabilities.

This paper presents a general method for computing transient sensitivities using both the direct and adjoint methods in event driven controlled explicit simulation algorithms that employ piecewise linear device models. This transient sensitivity capability is intended to be used in a simulation environment for transistor level analysis and tuning. Results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed techniques. Examples are also presented to illustrate how the transient sensitivity capability is used in timing characterization and circuit tuning.

RTL-based high level design methodology suffers a major drawback in the area of testability analysis due to lack of effective RTL fault models. Testability of a design is considered structure dependent. Since the structure of a design changes drastically with every logic synthesis run, testability analysis is performed only after final logic synthesis and therefore findings of such effort are too late to be implemented in the design without a significant schedule impact. In this paper we analyze the testability relationship between the RT level design and different structural (gate level) implementations resulting from optimization driven logic synthesis runs. We empirically establish that the testability properties of structural implementations are derived from architectural descriptions at the RT level and therefore logic synthesis does not significantly impact them. Furthermore, various different structural implementations resulting from logic synthesis (with different optimization constraints) exhibit poor testability in the same RTL design space. The data presented in this paper provides a missing key ingredient towards successful RTL fault modeling. We also propose the use of preliminary gate level netlist for early analysis to estimate testability properties of the final implementation.

This paper presents an investigation of noise and vibration characteristics and a modeling technique of the dynamic response of driven valve (valve train) system for a small air-cooled gasoline engine. Noise and vibration sources of this engine are experimentally classified by using various measurement methods. From these results, the abnormal motions of the valve system which are called jump and bounce phenomena have been found one of the main reason of noise sources. To improve them, the modeling of the valve system is carried out and numerical simulation is performed. As compared the simulated results with the experimental results, the validity of presented model has been confirmed. Then the optimum design of the valve system for improving these phenomena is completed.

This paper presents a general method for computing transient sensitivities using the adjoint method in event driven simulation algorithms that employ piecewise linear device models. Sensitivity information provides first order assessment of circuit variability with respect to design variables and parasitics. This information is particularly useful for noise stability analysis, timing rule generation, and circuit optimization. Techniques for incorporating adjoint transient sensitivity into ACES, a general piecewise linear simulator, are presented. Sensitivity computation includes algorithms to handle instantaneous charge redistribution due to the discontinuous conductance models of the piecewise linear elements, and the loss of simulation accuracy due to the non-monotonous responses in autonomous adjoint circuits with non-zero initial conditions. Results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed techniques.

We developed a new modular synthesis approach for design of low-power core-based data-intensive application-specific systems on silicon. The power optimization is conducted in three steps: minimization of instruction cache misses, placement of frequently executed sequential basic blocks of code in consecutive Gray code addressed memory locations, and processor and cache application-driven selection for low power. In order to bridge the gap between the profiling and modeling tools from the two traditionally disjoint synthesis domains (architecture and CAD), we developed a new synthesis and evaluation platform. The platform integrates the existing modeling, profiling, and simulation tools with the developed system-level synthesis tools. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated on a variety of modern industrial-strength multimedia and communication applications.

For being used in the design of Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) circuits in a multi-purpose manner, we developed a systematic and consistent approach for modeling the nominal circuit behavior using hardware description languages. We are presenting a method for establishing evaluation criteria for the circuit's behavior which can directly be used in the input for circuit simulation and serve as a behavioral reference in yield-driven optimization cycles. Furthermore, this behavioral modeling technique allows for mixed-mode simulation with its advantages of both analysis speed-up and error localization. Finally, we demonstrate the application in high-level circuit synthesis which will be necessary to manage complex design problems.
