This paper presents an algorithm for the performance driven placement of temperature sensitive analog integrated circuits. A simulated annealing algorithm is used to optimize ah initialy random placement. During each iteration of the optimization algorithm, the temperature distribution caused by power dissipating devices is calculated using an analytical multi-layer thermal model. The influence of local temperature differences on the performance of the circuit is then computed using sensitivity information and specification violations are penalized in the placer's cost function. In this way, it is guaranteed that the thermally-induced performance degradation, such as offset, stays within the specifications of the designer. An industrial circuit is used to verify the algorithm.

In this paper, we present a method for finding the CMOS VLSI chip temperature profile and the corresponding circuit performance by using a new electrothermal simulator, ETS-A. We use a sequence of procedures: layout extraction with x-y coordinates for individual transistors, fast timing-based power calculation, analytical thermal simulation using integral transform, followed by the electrothermal iterations until convergence. ETS-A takes advantage of the fast timing simulator while preserving the accuracy with use of temperature-dependent region-wise quadratic (RWQ) MOS transistor modeling techniques. The novel mixed 3-D & 1-D thermal simulator implemented in ETS-A efficiently takes into account the chip packaging and the thermal boundary conditions (BCs), which were often ignored in typical thermal simulations. With ETS-A, on-chip temperature profile can be calculated and further applied to guide the temperature-driven module placement as well as chip packaging designs.

A genetic algorithm for building-block placement of MCMs and ICs is presented which simultaneously minimizes layout area and an Elmore-based estimate of the maximum path delay while trying to meet a target aspect ratio. Explicit design space exploration is performed by using a vector-valued, S-dimensional cost function and searching for a set of distinct solutions representing the best tradeoffs of the cost dimensions. Designers can then choose from the output set of feasible solutions. In contrast to existing approaches such as simulated annealing, neither weights nor bounds are needed, thereby eliminating the inherent practical problems of specifying these quantities. Promising results are obtained for various placement problems, including a real-world MCM design.

The application of discrete event simulation for modeling the entire supply chain, or what has been coined 'virtual factories' is described. Using simulation during the design and implementation phases provides the supply chain with valuable insight into upstream and downstream processes to allow them to understand impacts before contracts are settled, schedules are defined or fatalities are developed. Implementation experience with the TRIDIUM low earth orbit satellite communications system is discussed. This virtual factory simulation model along with focus on lean manufacturing and global optimization is what has driven Motorola and its partners to produce 66 satellites at an unheard rate of 1 satellite per week.

Supply chain management, enterprise integration and global optimization are all necessary to compete in today's global market. As new products are developed and partnerships are formed, companies will need to focus on "global optimization" across the entire supply chain, not just a portion. This paper describes the application of discrete event simulation for modeling the entire supply chain, or what has been coined "virtual factories." Using simulation during the design and implementation phases provides the supply chain with valuable insight into upstream and downstream processes to allow them to understand impacts before contracts are settled, schedules are defined or facilities are developed. There are many benefits to he realized from virtual factory modeling. The first and most obvious is it provides the means and visibility to make decisions at the global level. This includes areas such as: optimization of shared resources (e.g., shipping containers); schedule alignment (evaluation of strategic inventory); and contingency planning. Secondly, it aids in communication between the suppliers and customers by providing better visibility into all of the business operations, policies and assumptions. Finally, it is the only tool that provides a visual representation of the entire virtual factory. It is the one place where management can see how their products an moving through this virtual factory without traveling from one company to the next. Implementation experience with the IRIDIUM low earth orbit satellite communications system is described. This virtual factory simulation model along with focus on lean manufacturing and global optimization is what has driven Motorola and its partners to produce 66 satellites at an unheard of rate of 1 satellite per week.

A simulation model for bubble 'et driven micro do- sing actuators has been developed. Calculation results are mass and velocity of Jected drops and detailed aspects of the flow process. Capable to simulate almost every combination of heating actuator design, actuator performance, How chamber and nozzle geometry it can serve to optimize the design of future dosing actuators. Thermodynamics of vapor bubble growth and fluid dynamics of drop ejection are sepa rately calculated in finite-volume schemes. The free surface of the forming drop is modeled.

A computer-aided simulation technique for the dynamical analysis of a class of GaAs FET optically-driven injection-locked oscillators (ODILO's) is presented. By combining a measurement-derived nonlinear model of the illuminated transistor with a phasor-domain analysis method, a first-approximation - but phenomenologically complete - differential model of the synchronized oscillator is derived. Since amplitude and phase of waveform evolutions are directly addressed and evaluated in a stroboscopic-time scale, the calculation of the transient response to modulated input signals can be done in a more user-friendly and computationally efficient manner than possible through conventional time-domain approaches. Furthermore, as shown by the simulation and experimental results presented, the calculation of locking bandwidth and other figures of merit of the ODILO is also fast and accurate, thus suggesting the use of the proposed approach in the development of dedicated CAD-tools for the design and optimization of high-speed data-links employing this new opto-electronic components.

In this study, a computer platform for investigating optimal trajectories of FES-induced motion was developed. Similar to a gait analysis program, this system interprets body segment lengths and joint angle trajectories for a subject undergoing an arbitrary movement, and displays that movement, along with a center of mass and time plot of the moment about the knee joint on-screen. Movements to be optimized in the near term are sit-to-stand transitions, stand-to-sit transitions, shifting weight side-to-side while seated, and single steps over small architectural barriers. These motions will be optimized for stability, efficiency, safety, and stress, as applied to a T-10 paraplegic human subject undergoing FNS of ten motor nerves in each leg. The program was demonstrated to work for sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit motions, and is now used to optimize those transitions.

Summary form only given, as follows. The twystrode employs a helix slow-wave structure together with a pre-bunched beam to generate microwaves. Because the beam can be tightly bunched as it enters the helix region, the conversion of energy to microwaves does not occur in the same manner as for conventional helix TWT's, since in particular, the linear growth regime is completely absent. MRCs electromagnetic PIC simulation code, MAGIC, has been used to model the twystrode device with several new state-of-the-art techniques. Most important is the Helix Polarizer Model, which permits 2-D simulation of the helical element, based on a sheath helix approximation. Other new simulation techniques include enhanced boundary modeling, improvements to better model three-dimensional structures such as dielectric supports and vanes, and new diagnostics which reveal the evolution of efficiency, harmonic content, backward- and forward-wave components, and beam quality throughout the twystrode. Additionally, an on-line collector-analysis capability provides an estimate of the recoverable energy in the spent beam and suggests optimum collector stage voltages. MAGIC has previously demonstrated good agreement with experimental measurements, and has been instrumental in the design of EGA-IIC, a high-efficiency twystrode experiment incorporating a highly tapered helix (pitch ratio of 3-to-1). Such a device is predicted to permit the slow-wave interaction of the pre-bunched electron beam to proceed into the 50% efficiency range. This paper will present simulation results for the 487 MHz EGA-IIB (an operating experiment using an untapered helix), EGA-IIC (an experiment underway using a tapered helix), and a hypothetical 10-GHz FEA-driven device (motivated by Microwave Power Module (MPM) requirements).

There are three general techniques for studying the design, operation and optimization of any type of system: implementation, modeling, and simulation. Implementation can be used when the time is available and the effort is justified. Mathematical modeling can be used if the system is simple enough or if gross approximations are acceptable. simulation is needed for the remaining cases. In all three cases, a crucial element is the need for accurate estimates of the "workload." For example, for a computer main or cache memory system, the workload may at one level of detail be the timing and sequence of memory addresses referenced; at another level of detail, it could be just the ratio of loads to stores. No matter how accurate the model of a system may be, any results from it are useless if the workload is not accurately represented. We discuss various types of models and when and what type of accurate workload data is needed. We pay particular attention to performance analysis of memory hierarchies and the use of trace driven simulation.< >
