Aquaponics, or recirculating aquaculture production systems, harness the symbiotic relationship between plants and fish for food production. A large quantity of fish can be raised in a small volume of water by the effect of plants in removing toxic waste products excreted by fish;in turn the waste is broken down by microbial activity to obtain concentrated nutrients for intensive plant/crop growing. The concentration of nutrients generated is similar to hydroponic nutrient solutions. Water is conserved in the integrated process and may be reused. In this paper we consider an approach comprising self-contained aquaponics production units each of which is a closed system where the balance of fish stock and plants is monitored and controlled automatically. We provide empirical results of a simulation and a physical implementation. The design involves an online virtual production unit implemented with a simulation that is updated with data from the real system (a dynamic data driven application system). The virtual unit anticipates the performance of the real system and enabling what if analysis and optimization of the behavior of the whole system: for example to maximize production, minimize waste, conserve water and other resources, meet quality standards, and other production goals.

As building simulation and multifaceted workflow are becoming frequently integrated into architectural design, the need for the interactive building design and simulation is growing. This paper studies the parametrization and the optimization of natural ventilation potential by using a building energy simulation (BES)-integrated design workflow within a surface modeling platform, Rhinoceros (or Rhino for short). Grasshopper is one of the widely-adapted parametric design platforms of Rhino thanks to its ability to connect environmental simulation engines such as EnergyPlus. However, there still exists the lack of connectivity between the parametric design platform and building performance simulation. Particularly for natural ventilation prediction, due to its susceptibility to the surrounding environment, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is often required. The goal of this study, therefore, is to provide several customized components that read the results from a CFD tool, find an optimal design solution for a problem, and enable the comprehensive workflow within the Rhino environment. To validate the proposed optimization process, two types of simulations are conducted: an interior CFD simulation and a BES-integrated natural ventilation simulation. The former confirms that the optimal solution suggested by the optimization possess the maximum cooling potential and tends to yield better ventilation efficiency. Design of modern antenna structures heavily exploits full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation tools. It is a practical necessity that results from unavailability or unreliability of other evaluation methods. EM-based adjustment of geometry parameter values aiming at improvement of electrical and field characteristics of the antenna at hand (also referred to as design closure) is of growing importance, especially in the case of topologically complex structures. When coupled with numerical optimization algorithms, the process can be automated but its bottleneck is a high computational cost. In this paper, the expedited version of a gradient search algorithm with numerical derivatives is proposed. Two major acceleration mechanisms are involved, a procedure for antenna sensitivity change monitoring as well as omission of finite-differentiation-based Jacobian updates for the parameters with respect to which the design relocation between the algorithm iterations is sufficiently small. Both methods allow us to greatly reduce the need for finite differentiation as a mean for estimating antenna gradients thus leading to considerable reduction of the computational cost of the optimization process (in the excess of 60 percent) while ensuring excellent reliability and repeatability, both measured using statistics over multiple algorithm runs with random initial designs. Comprehensive numerical experiments indicate superiority of the proposed approach over the reference trust-region gradient search algorithm as well as its several accelerated versions, recently reported in the literature.

Energy efficiency is a concern impacting both ecology and economy. Most approaches aiming at reducing the energy impact of a site focus on only one specific aspect of the ecosystem: appliances, local generation or energy storage. A trade-off analysis of the many factors to consider is challenging and must be supported by tools. This paper proposes a Model-driven Engineering approach mixing all these concerns into one comprehensive model. This model can then be used to size either local production means, either energy storage capacity and also help to analyze differences between technologies. It also enables process optimization by modeling activity variability: it takes the weather into account to give regular feedback to the end user. This approach is illustrated by simulation using real consumption and local production data from a representative agricultural site. We show its use by: sizing solar panels, by choosing between battery technologies and specification and by evaluating different demand response scenarios while examining the economic sustainability of these choices.

The on-line robust model predictive control (RMPC) has heavy on-line computation, which limits the application for the fast system. Meanwhile, the robust design may lead to the poor performance for the system with unknown but fixed model. Considering the above situations, this paper proposes an efficient data-driven MPC with input mapping method. The key contribution in this paper is that the online input mapping compensation method directly uses the combination of the past output data and their mapping relation to reduce the conservatism of RMPC. And the linear programming method is used for solving the optimization problem and obtaining the combination coefficients. It is shown that the online input mapping compensation method can improve control performance. Meanwhile, the proposed design is proven to be feasible and stable. The numerical simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Computational spectral imaging has been striving to capture the spectral information of the dynamic world in the last few decades. In this paper, we propose an interpretable neural network for computational spectral imaging. First, we introduce a novel data-driven prior that can adaptively exploit both the local and non-local correlations among the spectral image. Our data-driven prior is integrated as a regularizer into the reconstruction problem. Then, we propose to unroll the reconstruction problem into an optimization-inspired deep neural network. The architecture of the network has high interpretability by explicitly characterizing the image correlation and the system imaging model. Finally, we learn the complete parameters in the network through end-to-end training, enabling robust performance with high spatial-spectral fidelity. Extensive simulation and hardware experiments validate the superior performance of our method over state-of-the-art methods.

Softwarization of carrier networks is an unstoppable trend, driven by the possibility of instantiating Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) in carrier-owned data centers in their points-of-presence. In optical networks, VNF placement decisions are now intrinsically tight to IP and WDM resource allocations, e.g. in the metro, moving a VNF to a different central office changes the IP flows to carry, which then impacts the optical circuit footprint. In this paper, we review the efforts for a joint or cooperative optimization of the IT, IP and optical resources, both from the offline capacity planning and the online resource allocation points of view. The paper covers both theoretical results and practical implementation initiatives. Among them, we further elaborate on the Metro-Haul project approach, that proposes a common simulation framework for algorithm development and testing, which allows the application of those algorithms in demonstration prototypes.

Diabetes in pregnancy (DIP) is an increasing public health priority in the Australian Capital Territory, particularly due to its impact on risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. While earlier diagnostic screening results in greater capacity for early detection and treatment, such benefits must be balanced with the greater demands this imposes on public health services. To address such planning challenges, a multi-scale hybrid simulation model of DIP was built to explore the interaction of risk factors and capture the dynamics underlying the development of DIP. The impact of interventions on health outcomes at the physiological, health service and population level is measured. Of particular central significance in the model is a compartmental model representing the underlying physiological regulation of glycemic status based on beta-cell dynamics and insulin resistance. The model also simulated the dynamics of continuous BMI evolution, glycemic status change during pregnancy and diabetes classification driven by the individual-level physiological model. We further modeled public health service pathways providing diagnosis and care for DIP to explore the optimization of resource use during service delivery. The model was extensively calibrated against empirical data.

The work presented in this paper concerns modeling, and simulation of a controlled solar pumping system, composed of: photovoltaic panels, power converters, induction motor and the water pump. MPPT FUZZY-LOGIC approach gives better performance optimization of photovoltaic production system according to the sunshine in order to work permanently at the optimum operating point. The pump system is driven by an induction motor. For that, integral backstepping control structure is proposed. It gives interesting features in terms of stability using recursive Lyapunov design, increases robustness despite parameters variation, and provides a good tracking performance. simulation of the proposed solution is validated under Matlab/Simulink. Results demonstrate clearly that the proposed control structure provides fast dynamic response and stable static power output, even when weather conditions (irradiation) are rapidly changing.
