Time-lapse seismic monitoring is a powerful technique for reservoir management and the optimization of hydrocarbon recovery. In time-lapse seismic datasets, the difference in seismic properties across different vintages enables the detection of spatio-temporal changes in saturated properties and structure induced by production. The main objectives are (1) to identify bypass pay zones in time-lapse seismic data for the deepwater Amberjack field, located in the Gulf of Mexico, (2) confirm the identified bypass pay zones in the results of reservoir simulation, and (3) recommend well planning strategies to exploit these bypassed resources. A high-fidelity seismic-to-simulation 4D workflow that incorporates seismic, petrophysics, petrophysical property modeling, and reservoir simulation was employed, which leveraged cross-discipline interaction, interpretation, and integration to extend asset management capabilities. The workflow addresses geology (well log interpretation and framework development), geophysics (seismic interpretation, velocity modeling, and seismic inversion), and petrophysical property modeling (earth models and co-located co-simulation of petrophysical properties with P-impedance from seismic inversion). An embedded petro-elastic model (PEM) in the reservoir simulator is then used to affiliate spatial dry rock properties with saturation properties to compute dynamic elastic properties, which can be related to multi-vintage P-impedance from time-lapse seismic inversion. In the absence of the requisite dry rock properties for the PEM, a small data engine is used to determine these absent properties using metaheuristic optimization techniques. Specifically, two particle swarm optimization (PSO) applications, including an exterior penalty function (EPF), are modified resulting in the development of nested and average methods, respectively. In the last decades, the field of buildings had a great impact on the final energy consumption (up to 45%). Several efforts have been devoted to achieve the energy saving and optimization challenges that the European Union proposed. New approaches arose in the field of modeling and simulation. In this paper we propose a comparison between a standard physical white box modeling approach relying on the use of the well-known software TERMOLOG and an innovative data-driven black box modeling approach based on a Random Forest model. We present the results of the application of both methodologies on a case study. The aim of this work was to simulate the energy consumption together with some environmental signals such as the room temperature, the humidity and the CO2 concentration, providing the weather forecast and the comfort levels definition (desired room temperature and building usage habits). In the end, a deep analysis led to the statement of the advantages and limitations of both approaches. © 2019 IEEE.

Electromagnetic (EM)-driven geometry parameter adjustment is usually the final yet critically important stage of the antenna design process. The aim is an improvement of electrical and field performance within the limits imposed by the selected topology and, possibly, other constraints (e.g., the footprint area). A practical bottleneck is a high CPU cost of such simulation-based optimization, especially problematic in case of complex and multi-parameter structures. This paper proposes an accelerated version of a trust-region-embedded gradient search algorithm with numerical derivatives. The keystone of the method is the gradient change monitoring procedure which tracks the variations of the antenna response sensitivities occurring along the optimization path. The procedure suppresses finite-differentiation (FD)-based sensitivity updates for variables that exhibit stable gradient behaviour. This leads to considerable computational savings. Numerical results obtained for a set of benchmark wideband antennas demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms the reference algorithm (average cost reduction of over 40 percent) as well as the recently reported expedited trust-region optimizers with sparse gradient updates. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and Technology. Building environment is considered as a complex dynamics system with high uncertainty due to weather changes and human activities. Traditional sensor allocation methods are hard to generate the strategy to improve the observation performance of environmental information in buildings. But the simulation-based estimate is usually time-consuming and noisy. This paper presents a sensor allocation strategy based on the theory of ordinal optimization that the ordinal comparisons of performance measures are robust with respect to noise and modeling error. The basic idea is to use an approximate model that describes the temperature and humidity dynamics of the building. Nominal N allocations are obtained by uniform sampling with given numbers of the sensor. The ordinal optimization method is applied to isolate a good enough set S that contains some good allocations with high probability by performing rough evaluation through a neural network which is trained by clustered historical data. The best allocation is then selected by solving a model-driven building simulation for each of the allocations in S. Using this simulation-based method we are able to obtain a good enough sensor allocation strategy with reasonable computational effort. A case study is given based on a real building to demonstrate the proposed sensor location optimization method.

In recent years, industrial internet of things (IIoT) has become an important research topic among industry and academia. In IIoT there is a huge demand for data exchange among different smart devices with different delay flows. However, there is a less amount of research has been carried out in this field. In order to address the limitations of the traditional routing method, The proposed work gives a numerical modeling applicable to perform adaptive transmission optimization with a set of the programmable module structure and ensure cost-effective route establishment. The proposed work utilizes bio inspired swarm intelligence based data-driven cluster head (CH) selection with energy optimized route formation to obtain an optimal route. The extensive simulation outcome shows that particle swarm optimization (PSO) based clustering attain better delay, path difference degree and packet delivery ratio as compared to other conventional methods.

This work develops a technique for using robot motion trajectories to create a high quality stochastic dynamics model that is then leveraged in simulation to train control policies with associated performance guarantees. We demonstrate the idea by collecting dynamics data from a 1/5 scale agile ground vehicle, fitting a stochastic dynamics model, and training a policy in simulation to drive around an oval track at up to 6.5 m/s while avoiding obstacles. We show that the control policy can be transferred back to the real vehicle with little loss in predicted performance. We compare this to an approach that uses a simple analytic car model to train a policy in simulation and show that using a model with stochasticity learned from data leads to higher performance in terms of trajectory tracking accuracy and collision probability. Furthermore, we show empirically that simulation-derived performance guarantees transfer to the actual vehicle when executing a policy optimized using a deep stochastic dynamics model fit to vehicle data.

Compliance is a defining characteristic of biological systems. Understanding how to exploit soft materials as effectively as living creatures do is consequently a fundamental challenge that is key to recreating the complex array of motor skills displayed in nature. As an important step towards this grand challenge, we propose a model-based trajectory optimization method for dynamic, cable-driven soft robot locomotion. To derive this trajectory optimization formulation, we begin by modeling soft robots using the Finite Element Method. Through a numerically robust implicit time integration scheme, forward dynamics simulations are used to predict the motion of the robot over arbitrarily long time horizons. Leveraging sensitivity analysis, we show how to efficiently compute analytic derivatives that encode the way in which entire motion trajectories change with respect to parameters that control cable contractions. This information is then used in a forward shooting method to automatically generate optimal locomotion trajectories starting from high-level goals such as the target walking speed or direction. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method by generating and analyzing locomotion gaits for multiple soft robots. Our results include both simulation and fabricated prototypes.

Advanced technologies (e.g., distributed sensors, RFID, and auto-identification) can gather processing information (e.g., production system status and uncertain events) accurately and real-time. By combining the transparent, detailed and real-time production information with manufacturing system properties, this paper proposes an intelligent and automated modelling framework for real-time production planning and control, in which four key modeling problems are addressed: (1) Constructing dynamic equations with max-plus algebra to describe the dynamic behaviors of manufacturing systems, (2) formulating a real-time production planning framework to generate real-time input sequences of jobs, (3) establishing a model-based event-driven performance evaluation framework to identify real-time production loss, and (4) model data-driven predictive and robust-predictive production control framework to generate optimal release time of jobs. A 0-1 integer programming is established for key problem (2). A data-driven model predictive control framework and a Monte Carlo simulation-based optimization framework are respectively proposed for key problem (3) and (4). The proposed modelling framework utilizes the available real-time sensor data to facilitate predictive production decisions. The effort is a step forward to smart manufacturing in achieving improved system responsiveness and efficiency. © 2019, Computers and Industrial Engineering. All rights reserved.
