Existing distillation-based desalination processes are highly thermal energy consuming. Reverse osmosis (RO) technique is more efficient than thermal-based processes but it remains a solution that still induces high operating and maintenance costs. In this paper, an innovative thermally powered RO-based desalination process is presented. This new RO thermo-hydraulic process enables the pressurization of the salty water beyond its osmotic pressure to allow the permeation water through a semi-permeable membrane, thanks to a piston or an elastic bladder that is set in motion in a reservoir by a working fluid following a thermodynamic engine cycle similar to an Organic Rankine Cycle. The evaporator is heated by low grade heat (70 to 80°C) such the one delivered by plate solar collectors, while the condenser is cooled by the concentrated salty water. In order to enable a continuous drinkable water production, this process needs to implement two reservoirs, alternatively connected either to a high pressure evaporator or to a low pressure condenser. Such installation, designed here for brackish water desalination (5 g/liter), should enable an average daily production of 300 liters of drinkable water per m2 of solar collectors with a production cost below 4€/m3. That technology seems to be relevant for small scale (5 to 10 m3/day) the daily water needs of people living in remote areas, in accordance to the location and the solar resource. A modeling of the whole process, considering a quasi-steady state approach has been developed in order to study its dynamic behavior, optimize its design and maximize its performances. This paper presents the preliminary results relative to the performance of such solar-driven desalination process. © 2018 University of Minho. All rights reserved.

Considering that it is difficult to capture the characteristics of the wind field during a tornado event, especially the wind field near ground, it is important to reproduce the tornado-like vortices in the laboratory tornado simulator to systematically study the violent tornadic wind field and its effect on civil engineering structures. The tornado simulator studied here follows the same mechanism to generate the tornado-like vortices as the one at Iowa State University (ISU). That is, the flow, driven by the fan, self-circulates inside the simulator, and angular momentum is introduced by the guide vanes set at an angle with respect to the radius. A high-fidelity numerical model of this tornado simulator is established by modeling all the major mechanical components of the tornado simulator in the simulation, including the chamber/duct, guide vanes, fan, and honeycomb section. In order to identify the optimal shape for the laboratory tornado simulator, three tornado simulators with different geometric shapes of chambers are simulated. For each tornado simulator, both overall and near-floor tornadic wind fields are extracted. The obtained results show that the curved chamber provides a more stable flow compared with the multi-sided chamber that is used in the tornado simulator of ISU. The developed numerical model here helps gain more physical insights into tornado simulators, and impels the design optimization of this type of laboratory tornado simulator so that controllable tornado-like vortices can be better understood. © 2018 by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The paper addresses the problem of simulation-driven design of compact microwave couplers. The considered class of structures feature small-size layouts due to so-called compact microstrip resonant cells (CMRCs) incorporated as replacements for conventional transmission lines (TLs). CMRCs exhibit a slow-wave effect, which enables physical shortening of longitudinal circuit dimensions while retaining (within a certain frequency range) approximate electrical or wave parameters. The primary challenge in design of CMRC-based devices is proper adjustment of independent variables. Due to typically intricate CMRC geometries described by a large number of wide-ranged parameters (as compared to ordinary TLs), finding a reasonable starting point for subsequent design optimization poses considerable difficulties. Here, a novel algorithm for reliable CMRC optimization is proposed, which utilizes a combination of pattern search procedures, response features, and variable-fidelity EM simulations. As demonstrated through comprehensive case studies, the algorithm is capable of converging to a good solution regardless of the initial design. Furthermore, the CMRC optimizer is embedded in the design framework, which permits determining a minimum-size coupler with electrical performance that still satisfies design requirements imposed on the structure.

In software engineering, project scheduling is an essential factor that determines success of projects. Success is influenced by various project scheduling estimates, such as accurate estimates of project's duration and budget. These estimates highly depend on uncertainties related to commonly occurring unpredictable events during a project's duration. Furthermore, budget and duration estimates depend on the available teams and their performance levels with respect to tasks and circumstances. This paper proposes a data-driven Discrete-Event simulation (DES) approach to provide decision support to project managers in project scheduling. Moreover, we introduce a tool that we developed for this purpose, which features various visualizations of results and helps project managers compare different strategies and parameters.

The paper discusses low-cost multi-objective optimization of compact microwave components using variablefidelity EM simulation models and data-driven surrogates. Our approach builds upon a recently reported method where the initial approximation of the Pareto set is obtained by optimizing the kriging surrogate constructed from sampled data of the coarsediscretization EM model of the structure at hand, with selected designs further refined to obtain the high-fidelity Pareto set. The drawback of the method is a large number of training data samples required to set up the surrogate. Here, considerable savings concerning the training data set size are achieved by Pareto front decomposition based on auxiliary points identified along the front and setting up the kriging models in the corresponding subdomains. The key factor is that the total volume of the sub-domains is considerably smaller than the volume of the original domain. Our considerations are illustrated using a compact rat-race coupler with design optimization cost savings of 29- and 30-percent for two and three sub-domains, respectively.

In the last few decades, the statistical delay-bounded quality-of-service (QoS) technique has been proposed and investigated to support delay-bounded 5G multimedia wireless services In addition, energy harvesting (EH) based systems, which enable mobile devices to harvest energy from various external sources, have been designed to address the energy scarcity problem. Researchers have recently integrated EH based systems with short-packet communications for their potential benefits of small payloads and low latency to support reliable multimedia data transmissions. Under the short delay requirements for the low-latency 5G multimedia wireless services, it is not ideal to apply the traditional Shannon capacity for modeling the data rate under the error-rate bounded in the non-asymptotic regime. Accordingly, researchers have developed the finite wireless data transmission rate in the non-asymptotic regime. However, it is challenging to determine the convexity of the effective-capacity maximization problem subject to the statistical delay-bounded and error-rate bounded QoS constraints due to the complexity of analyzing the maximization problem in the non-asymptotic regime. To overcome these challenges, we design the EH based cross-layer optimization scheme in supporting the statistical delay-bounded and error-rate bounded QoS requirements in the finite blocklength regime in the following steps. First, we characterize the EH based system models under finite blocklength coding (FBC). Second, we derive and analyze the convexity of the e-effective capacity maximization problem for our proposed EH scheme in the finite blocklength regime. Finally, we conduct several simulation evaluations which validate our proposed EH scheme under the statistical delay-bounded and error-rate bounded QoS constraints in the finite blocklength regime.

Nowadays, there are more ships equipped with on-board monitoring systems and vessels with many sensors are becoming a standard. Available measurements can be employed for system optimization which play an important role in the vessel power plant configuration. The improvements in the power system design can be based on theoretical (modeling based on physical and empirical laws for simulation purposes, for example [1]) or data-driven modeling (machine learning, statistical approach [2]). The data-driven models can be supportive confirming theoretical assumptions or simplifications from simulations. They are also helpful to understand the real systems, including vessel dynamic behavior and interactions. Therefore, the combination of simulation and data-driven modeling will be beneficial by identifying relationships that help explain unidentified variations. This approach is recommended when aiming for a more reliable tool for design optimization and to overcome the limitation of the simulation models that all system properties and dynamic effects must be known beforehand. The scope in this work is to present a potential synergy between the simulation and the machine learning approach. A data-driven method can be complementary to a model based on physical and empirical laws. This is shown in the example of power plant model connected with a thruster and vessel model to simulate the typical transit scenario and the data-driven model. The paper proposes a simultaneous analysis of the theoretical and machine learning models to predict the vessel power/speed and study the complex systems' interactions in more detail, which are essential while exploring the system behavior.
