A steady growth of ambient RF energy density associated with a rapid increase of the number of broadcasting devices stimulates the research on broadband harvesting circuits. Such circuits can be used as energy sources for low-power sensors or Internet-of-Things devices. On the other hand, dedicated design techniques for rectifiers are lacking which results in poor performance of existing circuits. Also, their design cost is high because it involves hybrid electromagnetic (EM) and harmonic balance (HB) simulations. In this work, we propose a novel design procedure for low-cost design of broadband rectifiers. The core component of the approach is a novel equivalent-circuit-based low-fidelity model which does not involve harmonic balance (HB) simulations. The model consists of a matching circuit loaded with the RF-to-DC converter block represented using the S-parameter matrix. The latter is obtained from a single HB simulation of the converter circuit. Inaccuracy of the model is reduced using appropriate correction techniques. At the first stage of the design process, the proposed model is optimized for minimization of the in-band reflection. At the second stage, a hybrid HB-EM-based tuning oriented towards maximization of the structure efficiency is carried out. The proposed approach is demonstrated using a novel broadband rectifier operating within 0.5 GHz to 3.5 GHz band. Numerical cost of the method is80% lower compared to direct EM-HBbased optimization of the rectifier circuit.

This work addresses the problem of simultaneous determination of circuit topology and geometry parameter values of recurrent slow-wave structures. Here, the considered slow-wave structures are specifically meant for use as building blocks of two-section branch-line couplers, whose size and bandwidth depend on the aforementioned parameters. The proposed design strategy exploits data-driven models of the coupler components as well as surrogate-assisted techniques to accelerate the geometry optimization process. It allows for obtaining the smallest coupler for a given bandwidth without the necessity of executing multiple optimization routines at the level of the entire EM model of the coupler circuit.

Performance testing is an aspect of software testing which evaluates the behaviour of a system under certain workload. It becomes critical for the systems which are available to a large number of users simultaneously. This research study demonstrates the usage of the model-driven architecture (MDA) to performance testing. We do this by extending our existing tool to generate test cases which are capable of checking performance specific behaviour of a *** this paper from sequence diagrams, test cases are generated. First, we model the sequence diagram along with some parameters specific constraints, such as acceptable response time for an interaction which implements a particular functionality of the system. Next automated test cases are created based on the model mentioned above by MDA transformation tools. These tests cases are executable, and can be used to conduct performance testing of the system. We have provided a prototype implementation of this method using the Tefkat and MOFScript transformation tools (MTCGP). This paper provides details of this method and the tool that we have developed. MTCG-P has been applied to an example (ATM simulation System) to demonstrate its viability and effectiveness.

Multi-objective optimization yields indispensable information about the best possible design trade-offs of an antenna structure, yet it is challenging if full-wave electromagnetic (EM) analysis is utilized for performance evaluation. The latter is a necessity for majority of contemporary antennas as it is the only way of achieving acceptable modeling accuracy. In this paper, a procedure for accelerated multi-objective design of antennas is proposed that exploits fast data-driven surrogates constructed at the level of coarse-discretization EM simulations, multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to yield an initial approximation of the Pareto set, and response correction methods for design refinement (i.e., elevating the selected Pareto-optimal designs to the high-fidelity EM simulation model level). To reduce the computational cost of setting up the surrogate, the relevant part of the design space (i.e., the part containing the Pareto front) is first identified through a series of single-objective optimization runs and subsequently represented by a set of adjacent compartments with separate surrogate models established within them. This segmentation process dramatically reduces the number of training samples necessary to build an accurate model thus limiting the overall optimization cost. Our approach is demonstrated using a UWB monopole antenna and compared to a state-of-the-art surrogate-assisted technique that does not use domain segmentation.

In this paper, a novel algorithm for simulation-driven miniaturization of wideband antennas has been presented. Our approach exploits low-fidelity representation of the full-wave EM simulation model of the antenna at hand, trust-region-embedded gradient search with implicit constraint handling, as well as second-order polynomial models enhanced using output and frequency space mapping. It also features a repair procedure for handling infeasible solutions, which plays an important role in traversing the feasible region boundary and leads to reduced computational cost of the optimization process. Our methodology is validated using two ultra-wideband antennas and compared to conventional trust-region algorithm.

Robots fabricated by soft materials can provide higher flexibility and thus better safety while interacting with natural objects with low stiffness such as food and human beings. However, as many more degrees of freedom are introduced, the motion simulation of a soft robot becomes cumbersome, especially when large deformations are presented. Moreover, when the actuation is defined by geometry variation, it is not easy to obtain the exact loads and material properties to be used in the conventional methods of deformation simulation. In this paper, we present a direct approach to take the geometric actuation as input and compute the deformed shape of soft robots by numerical optimization using a geometry-based algorithm. By a simple calibration, the properties of multiple materials can be modeled geometrically in the framework. Numerical and experimental tests have been conducted to demonstrate the performance of our approach on both cable-driven and pneumatic actuators in soft robotics.

simulation-driven design of antenna structures is a time consuming process due to a large number of EM analyses required by the optimization algorithms to converge. Computational speedup can be achieved by means of various methods including utilization of adjoint sensitivities, variable-fidelity simulations, controlling design space dimensionality, as well as surrogate-assisted procedures. The paper proposes a simple modification of a trust-region gradient-based algorithm with numerical derivatives for optimization of input characteristics of antennas. In our approach, the time savings are obtained by adaptive handling of the antenna response Jacobian updates, based on the design change during each algorithm iteration as compared to the trust region size. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm modification may lead to up to 52 percent savings over the reference algorithm with only minor degradation of the design quality. Our considerations are illustrated using three UWB antenna structures.

This paper presents a new workflow comprised of using hydraulic fracture modeling outputs (effective length, height, and conductivity) for the next step – a discrete fracture flow model which visualizes the drainage pattern in 3D based on history matched production data. The first part of the paper is designated to fracture forward modeling and prediction of the proppant placement geometry and conductivity of hydraulic fractures in a multistage horizontal well. The influence of wellbore deviations and other local initial conditions are all taken into account and explain localized fracture initiation, fracture asymmetry, and propagation, as well as proppant placement efficiency. The primary model focus is on the creation of fracture conductivity maps, one for each transverse fracture. The second part of this study shows the process of import and conversion of 2D fracture conductivity maps for further use in fluid flow allocation to the individual fractures. The 3D Drained Rock Volume (DRV) is rendered based on 2D streamline and time-of-flight maps for drainage, velocity and pressure depletion with 5 ft vertical resolution layers representing the reservoir. Instead of using a grid-based numerical simulation, we apply a meshless flow model based on Complex Analysis Methods (CAM) to solve linear differential equations. The fluid velocity field is computed for narrowly discretized time steps, which allows high-resolution visualization of hydrocarbon flow near and into each of the discrete fractures. Honoring critical physical interaction of fracture fluid, rock mechanics, proppant transport, the fracture propagation model coupled with the flow model for discrete fractures, provides a powerful tool to pinpoint the drained rock volume. Our systematic study highlights trade-offs between fracture design inputs and the total drained rock volume. When it comes to building a successful public bike share such as the NYC CitiBike system, there are many important questions to answer. There is no shortage of work being done on finding the most efficient way to redistribute bikes to stations. Equally important to how to distribute bikes is the question of when to redistribute bikes. Redistribute too infrequently and customers become frustrated, resulting in decreased revenue. Redistribute too frequently and the cost of redistribution becomes prohibitively high. In this piece of research, we attempt to find the optimal time to call for the redistribution of bikes to minimize cost and retain maximum membership.

In this work, we demonstrate accelerated multi-objective optimization of integrated inductors by means of Pareto front exploration. The objectives of interest include minimization of the component area, maximization of the quality factor, as well as maintaining required inductance value at a given operating frequency. A set of Pareto-optimal designs is found by moving along the Pareto front using local optimization methods. Considerable reduction of the design cost is achieved by extrapolating inductor dimensions at the subsequent optimal point based on already available data. An illustration example is provided.
