Computationally efficient design optimization of dual-band microstrip couplers is demonstrated using an adaptive response scaling (ARS) technique. ARS allows for constructing a fast surrogate of the high-fidelity EM-simulation model of the coupler structure under design using its equivalent circuit as an underlying low-fidelity model. ARS relies on nonlinear frequency/amplitude response scaling that accommodates the discrepancies between the low- and high-fidelity models at the reference design. ARS has been applied for design of a dual-band microstrip coupler with enhanced bandwidth.

Issues in Energy Efficiency of Data Centers (DC) are important, due to the cumulative effects of the increase in the DCs number and in the energy consumption per center. Developing new design recommendations to improve a cooling system efficiency, commonly quantified by the PUE metric (Power Usage Effectiveness) is one objective of the Green IT organizations. For existing DCs, without considering the optimization of the IT workload, a possible way to improve the DC's energy efficiency is to adjust the cooling setpoints. In this paper, a methodology based on predictive models is used to optimize the PUE by improving the cooling setting. The modeling approach consists in exploiting the temperatures and energy measurements at various operating conditions to predict the PUE behavior using data-driven models commonly called black box models. The optimization procedures are based on the simulation of these models in order to estimate the best working conditions.

This work focus on the application of Fuzzy-Backstepping controller, based on optimization method, for trajectory tracking problem. The control algorithm based on the errors in postures of mobile robot which feed to the Fuzzy-Backstepping controller to generate correction signals that transport to torque for each driven wheel. By means of dynamic model of mobile robot, these torques are used to compute the linear and angular speed to reach the desired pose. In this work, a dynamics model of mobile robot was driven for the case where the centroid, of mobile robot platform, is not coincide with reference frame of mobile robot, while the inertia is counted for. The Evolutionary Algorithm has been used to modify the parameters of the proposed controller for wheeled mobile robot. simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm from tracking S-shape trajectory. The results show a good matching between the desired trajectory and the simulation one, while the error in posture goes to zero rapidly.

Multi-constrained Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP) are gaining in interest. Due to technology advancement, especially the stochastic character of real world VRP's obtains more emphasis within the solution finding process. Besides the multi scenario approach, simulation-based optimization addresses the randomness, and is proposed as a solving method. In this paper, we present a short review of existing open-source Rich VRP (RVRP) models. We introduce a RVRP simulation Model and its corresponding Discrete Event Simulator. It is used to evaluate routing solution candidates for metaheuristic-driven optimization frameworks. Our implementation is published under an open source license in a public repository. We demonstrate the integration of our RVRP Simulator with the general purpose metaheuristic optimization framework SEREIN and show the feasibility of our approach by applying it to well-known Capacitated VRP instances.

Gravity-driven flow is an attractive approach to develop simpler microfluidic systems. Because clogged microchannels could easily lead to fatal operational failures, it is crucial to monitor flow rate in these systems. Therefore, we propose here for the first time a numerical model that combines a calorimetric flow sensor and a gravity-driven system. With the validated model, we studied the flow behavior in a gravity-driven system. Furthermore, we were able to improve the sensitivity of the measurement based on simulation results. This demonstrates, how the model could be used as an effective optimization tool in the gravity-driven system including calorimetric flow measurement.

Cable driven parallel mechanism is a special kind of parallel robot in which traditional rigid links are replaced by actuated cables. This provides a new suspension method for wind tunnel test, in which an aircraft model is driven by a number of parallel cables to fulfil a series motion. To meet the precision and stability requirement of wind tunnel tests, a hybrid pose and tension control method based on stiffness optimization is proposed, in which the pose is feedback, and the cable tension is feedforward by pre-regulation to improve the main translation and rotation stiffness. A typical sinusoidal motion of aircraft in wind tunnel is taken as an example. simulation results show that the hybrid control method not only ensures a high precision, but also improves the system stiffness, i.e. the system stability. The results can be used to provide guidance for the cable driven parallel suspension system's application in wind tunnel tests, especially for a larger angle motion with high speed incoming flow.

A structure and design optimization procedure of a compact UWB slot antenna is presented. Small size of the antenna and its good electrical performance is achieved by introducing sufficiently large number of geometry degrees of freedom, including a stepped-impedance teed line and a meandered slot with parameterized dimensions. All dimensions are simultaneously adjusted using automated EM-simulation-driven optimization algorithm. Exploitation of variable-fidelity models allows us to maintain low computational cost of the design process. The footprint of the optimized antenna is only 8.93 mm x 17.9 mm (160 mm~2) while maintaining low reflection in the entire UWB frequency range.

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is used to detect internal flaws in materials and to characterize material properties. In many applications, computational simulations are an important part of the inspection-design and analysis processes. Having fast surrogate models for UT simulations is key for enabling efficient inverse analysis and model-assisted probability of detection (MAPOD). In many cases, it is impractical to perform the aforementioned tasks in a timely manner using current simulation models directly. Fast surrogate models can make these processes computationally tractable. This paper presents investigations of using surrogate modeling techniques to create fast approximate models of UT simulator responses. In particular, we propose to integrate data-driven methods (here, kriging interpolation with variable-fidelity models to construct an accurate and fast surrogate model. These techniques are investigated using test cases involving UT simulations of solid components immersed in a water bath during the inspection process. We will apply the full ultrasonic solver and the surrogate model to the detection and characterization of the flaw. The methods will be compared in terms of quality of the responses.

Creating new software or software-intensive systems is still a challenge and far removed from a traditional engineering domain. The increasing size of software deployed in typical systems and the emergence of very large highly distributed systems necessitates additional techniques to assure the systems quality. Using the example of the German automatic toll system we briefly outline a simulation driven development approach: Using simulation models starting with the very early design stages to verify and validate the overall dynamic system behavior throughout the whole development process. In practice the approach depends particularly on the performance of the simulation model: Many simulation runs are necessary while exploring the solution space of a proposed change or while calibrating and optimizing parameters of the simulation models. Starting with an existing model of the German automatic toll system we look at two different possibilities for parallelization - parallelized optimization and the partial transformation of the simulation model to a parallelized implementation.

This paper presents a novel distributed optimization framework to achieve energy efficiency in large-scale buildings. The modular problem formulation presented in this paper decouples the supervisory optimization scheme from the data-driven micro-level modeling aspect leading to significant scalability and flexibility. Recently developed generalized gossip protocol is used as a robust distributed optimization technique. A supervisory control design problem for multi-zone temperature regulation and energy usage minimization is considered as a case study to describe the generic framework. Numerical simulation results, presented based on a physical testbed in the Iowa Energy Center, demonstrate the advantages of the distributed optimization methodology compared to a typical baseline strategy. The paper also outlines a software architecture based on the VOLTTRON platform, recently developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), for real-life implementation of the proposed framework.
