The paper presents a design of an ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with an integrated balun. A fully planar balun interfacing the microstrip input of the structure to the coplanar stripline (CPS) input of the dipole antenna is introduced. The electromagnetic (EM) model of the structure includes the dipole, the balun, and the microstrip input to account for interactions over the UWB band. The EM model is adjusted for low reflection over the UWB band by means of fast simulation-driven surrogate-based optimization. This allows us to obtain the final design at low computational costs. Measurements of the manufactured optimal design validate the use of the balun as well as the design approach.

In this paper, a methodology for rapid design optimization of an ultra-wideband ( UWB) monopole antenna with a lower WLAN band-notch is presented. The band-notch is realized using an open loop resonator implemented in the radiation patch of the antenna. Design optimization is a two stage process, with the first stage focused on the design of the antenna itself, and the second stage aiming at identification of the appropriate dimensions of the resonator with the purpose of allocating the band-notch in the desired frequency range. Both optimization stages are realized using surrogate-based optimization involving variable-fidelity electromagnetic ( EM) simulation models as well as an additive response correction ( first stage), and sequential approximate optimization ( second stage). The final antenna design is obtained at the CPU cost corresponding to only 23 high-fidelity EM antenna simulations.

In this paper we define a simulation-driven process to improve the design of real-time control systems. The process aims at exploring the interplay betwen control performance and real-time behavior of control tasks. The traditional design flows based on the definition of implicit tasks deadlines on control functions are extended to include the exploration of relaxed deadlines and order of execution constraints. Relaxed deadlines, coupled with an optimization approach to find feasible task sets, allow the exploration and evaluation of different task implementations. The definition of relaxed deadlines and the evaluation of task implementations is performed using the T-Res (Time and Resource) scheduling simulation framework [21] under Simulink. The problem is defined as a quadratic optimization problem using a tight upper bound formulation of the task response times. The application of the method to a quadcopter case study shows how the consideration of the control performance in the definition of the timing parameters of interest can lead to an improved design.

A procedure for low-cost multi-objective design optimization of antenna structures is discussed. The major stages of the optimization process include: (i) an initial reduction of the search space aimed at identifying its relevant subset containing the Pareto-optimal design space, (ii) construction-using sampled coarse-discretization electromagnetic (EM) simulation data-of the response surface approximation surrogate, (iii) surrogate optimization using a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, and (iv) the Pareto front refinement. Our optimization procedure is demonstrated through the design of a planar quasi Yagi-Uda antenna. The final set of designs representing the best available trade-offs between conflicting objectives is obtained at a computational cost corresponding to about 172 evaluations of the high-fidelity EM antenna model.

The size of microwave components has become an important design criterion for contemporary wireless communication engineering. Unfortunately, reduction of geometrical dimensions usually remain in conflict with electrical performance of the circuit, which makes it necessary to look for designs being a compromise between these two types of objectives. In this chapter, we discuss strategies for computationally-efficient multi-objective design optimization of miniaturized microwave structures. More specifically, we consider an optimization methodology based on point-by-point identification of a Pareto-optimal set of designs representing the best possible trade-offs between conflicting objectives, which include electrical performance parameters as well as the size of the structure of interest. Design speedup is achieved by performing most of the operations at the level of suitably corrected equivalent circuit model of the structure under design. Model correction is implemented using a space mapping technique involving, among others, frequency scaling. Operation and performance of our approach is demonstrated using a compact rat-race coupler designed with respect to the following objectives: bandwidth and the layout area. A representation of the Pareto set consisting of ten designs is obtained at the cost corresponding to less than thirty high-fidelity electromagnetic simulations of the structure.

Cost-efficient multi-objective design of antenna structures is presented. Our approach is based on design space reduction algorithm using auxiliary single-objective optimization runs and coordinate system rotation. The initial set of Pareto-optimal solutions is obtained by optimizing a response surface approximation model established in the reduced space using coarse-discretization EM simulation data. The optimization engine is multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA). The designs obtained by MOEA are subsequently refined by means of response correction techniques. Our approach is demonstrated using a planar UWB dipole antenna.

Due to the frequent changes of the operating point right across the whole operation range, industrial processes are generally nonlinear. There exists a large amount of physics constraints in a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). The control problems of the constrained nonlinear processes present great challenge. Considering the various disturbances, including the internal disturbances, i.e., system uncertainties and the modeling errors, and the external disturbances, i.e., the unknown external forces and wind speeds. A compound control combined with Model Predictive Control (MPC) theory and Disturbance Observer (DO) is proposed in this paper. MPC can roll optimization and feedback correction. Therefore, the model predictive control can achieve very high control performance. In addition, to reduce prediction error caused by parameter variation during operations, the DO is adopted to estimate a lumped disturbance term that is feed-forward then. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed composite control strategy has a good speed tracking performance in a wind energy conversion system.

A technique for computationally efficient multi-objective design optimization of compact RF/microwave components is presented. Our approach exploits response surface approximation (RSA) models of the basic building blocks of the structure of interest and their cascade connection as a fast low-fidelity model of the entire structure. The set of Pareto-optimal solutions (corresponding to the best possible trade-offs between conflicting objectives) is obtained by optimizing the low-fidelity model using a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The Pareto set is then iteratively refined through re-optimization of the low-fidelity model corrected by means of space mapping, and using EM-simulation data of the structure at hand sampled along the current approximation of the Pareto front. The proposed methodology is demonstrated using two examples of compact wideband matching transformers.

In this chapter, we present an overview of the piecewise smooth model and simulation of a traffic system, characterized by a single vehicle traveling through a sequence of traffic lights that turn "on" and "off" with a specific frequency and a phase. The model includes three main dynamical modes: accelerated, decelerated, and null state. We show the description of the mathematical modeling used to simulate the system. The simulation was developed under an event-driven strategy and implemented in Matlab. Regarding the numerical analysis, we built a bifurcation diagram where the parameter under variation is the cycle of traffic lights. As a principal result, we evidence the effects of the cycle of traffic light in the dynamical behavior of the system.
