A methodology for a rapid design optimization of integrated photonic couplers is presented. The proposed technique exploits variable-fidelity electromagnetic (EM) simulation models, additive response correction for accommodating the discrepancies between the EM models of various fidelities, and local response surface approximations for a fine tuning of the final design. A specific example of a 1,555 nm coupler is considered with an optimum design obtained at a computational cost corresponding to about 24 high-fidelity EM simulations of the structure.

In this paper, a flexible conveyance system consists of 4 pole hybrid electromagnet and linear synchronous motor is introduced. Firstly, modeling of 4 pole hybrid electromagnet was derived based on well - known magnetic circuit principles. Then, the control method in which the currents converge virtually to zero is called as "zero power control" is applied to hybrid electromagnet to stabilize the system and provide levitation against gravity. Secondly, PM-LSM, which enables to move hybrid electromagnet horizontally, is modeled. According to modeling basis, I-PD controller is designed to provide moving action in a desired position reference. simulation and experimental studies of position control for both levitation and horizontal motion verify validity of the proposed methods.

In this paper, an algorithmic framework for cost-efficient design optimization of miniaturized impedance matching transformers has been presented. Our approach exploits a bottom-up design that involves translating the overall design specifications for the circuit at hand to its elementary building blocks (here, compact microstrip resonant cells, CMRCs), as well as fast surrogate-assisted optimization of the cells followed by simulation-based tuning of the entire transformer structure. The last stage involves local response surface approximation models and space mapping for model correction. The proposed technique is illustrated using two wideband transformers, a three- and a four-section one. In both cases, the optimization cost corresponds to just a few dozen of full-wave simulations of the respective structures despite a relatively large number of geometry parameters to be adjusted.

Animation and character animation has been one of important research field of virtual reality contents of the computer in recent years, with the vigorous development of 3D games and animation and film special effects industry, the role of the physical animation authenticity increasingly urgent demands, based on the physical character animation synthesis researchers have been more and more attention, spawned many new methods and new technologies. the core of the problem is the study of human motion synthesis method, it is intended to drive a virtual character motion, they produce the physical law of motion animation. focus on Advances in synthetic methods are described first in character animation for the whole domestic and foreign research and analysis and summary on the basis of calculations based on different joint torque will be divided into 7 categories: time and space constraint method, constrained dynamic optimization method, after the low-dimensional model, finite state machines, data-driven, kinetic filtration, probabilistic modeling method, described in detail the principles and characteristics of each class methods, focusing on new working methods in each class recent Secondly, the above comparative analysis of advantages and disadvantages of the method carried out. Finally, the actual application requirements, deficiencies exist in the work for the present, can continue to make some in-depth research.

Agent-based modeling is commonly used for studying complex system properties emergent from interactions among many agents. We present a novel data-driven agent-based modeling framework applied to forecasting individual and aggregate residential rooftop solar adoption in San Diego county. Our first step is to learn a model of individual agent behavior from combined data of individual adoption characteristics and property assessment. We then construct an agent-based simulation with the learned model embedded in artificial agents, and proceed to validate it using a holdout sequence of collective adoption decisions. We demonstrate that the resulting agent-based model successfully forecasts solar adoption trends and provides a meaningful quantification of uncertainty about its predictions. We utilize our model to optimize two classes of policies aimed at spurring solar adoption: one that subsidizes the cost of adoption, and another that gives away free systems to low-income households. We find that the optimal policies derived for the latter class are significantly more efficacious, whereas the policies similar to the current California Solar Initiative incentive scheme appear to have a limited impact on overall adoption trends.

In this paper, the improved active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) method is discussed firstly. This method is applied to the high precision positioning table, which is driven by the voice coil motor (VCM). Compared with the conventional ADRC, the proposed ADRC has been improved for its tracking differentiator (TD) is replaced by the reference trajectory optimization (RTO), which is based on 5 order S-shaped curve (FOS). An extended state observer (ESO) of the ADRC can observe disturbances and uncertainties of the system, and cancel them dynamically. Secondly, the hybrid cascaded H-bridge (HCHB) seven-level inverter topology structure is proposed to make sure that the current could possess high power and low ripple at the same time. However, the HCHB inverter has its own drawback that its current flows backwards in it. Therefore, the hybrid frequency carrier-based PWM (HFPWM) modulation method is put forward to solve this problem. Thirdly, the mathematical model of VCM is established accurately, which takes the air damping, eddy current damping and elastic stiffness into consideration. Finally, the experimental and simulation results show that the improved ADRC control method can effectively improve positioning accuracy and robustness;the FOS curve can reduce the impact of shocks and residual vibration;the HCHB inverter resolves the contradiction between high power and low ripple. A computationally efficient technique for design optimization of UWB antennas has been presented. Our approach adopts feature-based optimization (FBO) concept where the computational speedup is achieved by reformulating the design specifications in terms of suitably defined response features. Because the dependence of the feature point coordinates on geometry parameters of the antenna is much less nonlinear than for the original characteristics (e.g., S-parameters versus frequency), the optimization algorithm converges faster. Moreover, variable-fidelity electromagnetic (EM) simulation models are utilized to further reduce the optimization cost. In case of UWB antennas, the feature points are defined, among others, as local maxima of the reflection characteristic within the UWB frequency band, as well as the frequency location of the point corresponding to acceptable reflection level in the vicinity of the lower edge of the band (3.1 GHz). The issue related to possible change of the number of the feature points during the optimization run has been also addressed. Operation and performance of our technique is demonstrated using an example monopole antenna. It is also compared to conventional optimization using pattern search.

In September 2013, the large laser-based inertial confinement fusion device housed in the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, was widely acclaimed to have achieved a milestone in controlled fusion- successfully initiating a reaction that resulted in the release of more energy than the fuel absorbed. Despite this success, we remain some distance from being able to create controlled, self-sustaining fusion reactions. Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) represents one leading design for the generation of energy by nuclear fusion. Since the 1950s, ICF has been supported by computing simulations, providing the mathematical foundations for pulse shaping, lasers, and material shells needed to ensure effective and efficient implosion. The research presented here focuses on one such simulation code, EPOCH, a fully relativistic particle-in-cell plasma physics code, developed by a leading network of over 30 UK researchers. A significant challenge in developing large codes like EPOCH is maintaining effective scientific delivery on successive generations of high-performance computing architecture. To support this process, we adopt the use of mini-applications small code proxies that encapsulate important computational properties of their larger parent counterparts. Through the development of a mini app for EPOCH (called miniEPOCH), we investigate known time step scaling issues within EPOCH and explore possible optimisations: (i) Employing loop fission to increase levels of vectorisation;(ii) Enforcing particle ordering to allow the exploitation of domain specific knowledge and, (iii) Changing underlying data storage to improve memory locality. When applied to EPOCH, these improvements represent a 2.02 x speed-up in the core algorithm and a 1.55x speed-up to the overall application runtime, when executed on EPCC's Cray XC30 ARCHER platform.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is widely applied in coal-fired power plants. SCR process is a complex physical and chemical process with multi-input, strong coupling, nonlinear, and time delay characteristics. An effective model is the basis of conducting control and optimization. In this paper, influencing factors of catalytic reaction in SCR converter are analyzed and five measurable parameters are selected as the model input variables. NOx emission and NH3slip are separately taken as output variables. The LSSVM algorithm is employed to build the SCR models using real plant operation data from a 1000 MW coal-fired boiler. simulation results have shown satisfied model accuracy and effectiveness are achieved. © 2015 IEEE.
