In this paper, we present a methodology for expedited hierarchical simulation-driven design of miniaturized multi-section branch-line couplers (BLCs). The design process starts from optimization of elementary cells of a slow-wave structure, followed by a fast tuning of their cascade as well as the tuning of the entire coupler. The last two stages exploit surrogate-assisted optimization with the underlying low-fidelity models constructed using local response surface approximations and circuit-theory-based connection of lower-level components (e.g., elementary cells for cascade tuning, etc.). This results in an overall low computational cost of the design optimization process, which is less than three EM simulations of the entire microwave component at hand. The proposed methodology is demonstrated through the design of a novel compact two-section BLC for 0.85 GHz to 1.15 GHz frequency range.

As urban population grows, cities face many challenges related to transportation, resource consumption, and the environment. Ride sharing has been proposed as an effective approach to reduce traffic congestion, gasoline consumption, and pollution. Despite great promise, researchers and policy makers lack adequate tools to assess tradeoffs and benefits of various ride-sharing strategies. Existing approaches either make unrealistic modeling assumptions or do not scale to the sizes of existing data sets. In this paper, we propose a real-time, data-driven simulation framework that supports the efficient analysis of taxi ride sharing. By modeling taxis and trips as distinct entities, our framework is able to simulate a rich set of realistic scenarios. At the same time, by providing a comprehensive set of parameters, we are able to study the taxi ride-sharing problem from different angles, considering different stakeholders' interests and constraints. To address the computational complexity of the model, we describe a new optimization algorithm that is linear in the number of trips and makes use of an efficient indexing scheme, which combined with parallelization, makes our approach scalable. We evaluate our framework and algorithm using real data - 360 million trips taken by 13,000 taxis in New York City during 2011 and 2012. The results demonstrate that our framework is effective and can provide insights into strategies for implementing city-wide ride-sharing solutions. Cognitive monitoring and screening holds great promises for early detection and intervention of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A critical enabler is the personalized degradation model to predict the cognitive status over time. However, estimating such a model using individual's data faces challenges due to the sparsity and fragmented nature of the cognitive data of each individual. To mitigate this problem, we propose novel methods, called the collaborative degradation model (CDM) together with its extended network regularized version, the NCDM, which can incorporate useful domain knowledge into the degradation modeling. While NCDM results in a difficult optimization problem, we are inspired by existing non-negative matrix factorization methods and develop an efficient algorithm to solve this problem and further provide theoretical results that ensure that the proposed algorithm can guarantee non-increasing property. Both simulation studies and the real-world application to AD are conducted across different degradation models and sampling schemes, which demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods over existing methods. Production modeling is a process that requires analyzing several steps, from reservoir characterization, completion and hydraulic fracturing, up to the optimization in the production system. Traditionally these processes can be analyzed independently with separated specialized tools. However in unconventional reservoirs, as the Vaca Muerta shale, dependency between the stimulation treatment and the well productivity is critical. This work proposes a workflow to evaluate the joint impact of hydraulic fractures with the static and dynamic characterization of the reservoir. The available static information (geophysics, petrophysics, geomechanics and natural fracture interpretation) is integrated to build a geological model. Then, hydraulic fracturing is simulated numerically using the Unconventional Fracture Model (UFM). The model takes into account the interaction between the existing natural fractures and the created hydraulic fractures during the stimulation treatment. The resulting geometry of the hydraulic fractures is gridded in an unstructured manner. The model reproduces explicitly the volume and permeability with the appropriate distribution along each branch of hydraulic fractures according to the executed completion. Dynamic simulation can be run to perform a history match of the available production data. Hydraulic fracture geometry, driven by geomechanics and natural fractures, is a key component of the process and might be reviewed if no production match can be achieved making the overall workflow iterative. Additionally, automation through assisted history matching is proposed to investigate different possible solution and reduce the timeframe of the study. Once calibrated with production, the model allows several applications. The different possible solutions considered by the assisted history match process permit the evaluation of the uncertainty of final recovery when forecasting production. This paper presents an algorithmic development in the framework of computationally efficient robust Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) which deals with a parametric plant-model mismatch, where the description of the evolution of the uncertainty is done using a scenario tree, known as multi-stage approach. In order to reduce the computational time and memory requirements of the multistage NMPC, the calculations of the optimal control inputs can be done scenario-wise in parallel. These parallelized calculations must enforce the satisfaction of the non-anticipativity constraints, which is negotiated iteratively among the scenarios using Lagrangean or price-driven decomposition. The main challenge in using such scheme is the determination of the values of the aggregate variables that are used to coordinate the scenario-wise computations for convergence to the feasibility of the non-anticipativity constraints. The proposed approach uses parametric sensitivities of the optimal model states with respect to the control inputs which are used for the iterative determination of the values of aggregated variables. The proposed method achieves good performance and faster convergence compared to traditional decomposition schemes. The potential of the approach is demonstrated in simulation example of an hydrodesulphurisation unit.

The paper presents a design of an ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with an integrated balun. A fully planar balun interfacing the microstrip input of the structure to the coplanar stripline (CPS) input of the dipole antenna is introduced. The electromagnetic (EM) model of the structure includes the dipole, the balun, and the microstrip input to account for interactions over the UWB band. The EM model is adjusted for low reflection over the UWB band by means of fast simulation-driven surrogate-based optimization. This allows us to obtain the final design at low computational costs. Measurements of the manufactured optimal design validate the use of the balun as well as the design approach.

Diffusion-driven current transport (DDCT) has recently been proposed as a new way to organize the current injection in nanoscale optoelectronic devices. The very recent first proof-of-principle experiments have also shown that DDCT works as predicted theoretically. In this work we perform simulations on DDCT-based III-Nitride devices and demonstrate how the optimization of DDCT differs significantly from the optimization of conventional double heterostructure based devices.
