In this paper we present an efficient decision-making framework allowing optimization via simulation combining metaheuristics algorithms and DEVS formalism. A proposed object-oriented approach provides an universal interface between any existing DEVS models and some existing metaheuristics. To do this we explode the optimization algorithms into several actions involved in an optimization loop. Concerning the evaluation step which one can find in each metaheuristic we propose to externalize it into decision models using DEVS messages. This interconnection of components generates the following new concepts: (i) event-driven metaheuristic parametrization that allows an automatic execution of the associated algorithm;(ii) creation of dynamic and hydrid metaheuristics used for hard-optimization problems;(iii) decision support variables temporization that allows optimization on a specific time interval. We validated the effectiveness of the previous concepts through the implementation of the popular genetic algorithms and the more recent harmonic search algorithm. Furthermore the validation is completed on a real case example concerning medical treatment through a simple glycemic DEVS model. simulation results show that the resulting treatement reduces the risk of over-tratement or under-treatement.

Abstract. An important step of the microwave design process is the adjustment of geometry and material parameters of the structure under consideration to make it meet given performance requirements. Nowadays, it is typically conducted using full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulations. Because accurate high-fidelity simulations are computationally expensive, automation of this process is quite challenging. In particular, the use of conventional numerical optimization algorithms may be prohibitive as these methods normally require a large number of objective function evaluations (and, consequently, EM simulations) to converge. The adjoint sensitivity technique that recently become available in commercial EM simulation software packages can be utilized to speed up the EM-driven design optimization process either by utilizing the sensitivity information in conventional gradient-based algorithms or by combining it with surrogate-based approaches. Here, several recent methods and algorithms for microwave design optimization using adjoint sensitivity are reviewed. We discuss advantages and disadvantages of these techniques and illustrate them through numerical examples. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

This paper presents aspects concerning the design and testing of a new data-driven Iterative Reference Input Tuning (IRIT) algorithm that solves a reference trajectory tracking problem expressed as an optimization problem with control signal saturation constraints and control signal rate constraints. The design of the IRIT algorithm uses an experiment-based stochastic search algorithm formulated in the framework of Iterative Learning Control (ILC) in order to combine the advantages of data-driven control and of ILC. The iterative tuning is model-free in the sense it does not use control system models. A set of simulation results tests and validates the IRIT algorithm in a case study related to a representative mechatronics application that deals with the position control of a nonlinear aero-dynamical system. The IRIT algorithm offers the performance improvement by few iterations and experiments conducted on the process.

In this work, we introduce a robust and efficient technique for rapid design of compact RF circuits. Our approach exploits two-level space mapping (SM) correction of an equivalent circuit model of the structure under design. The first SM layer (local correction) is utilized to ensure good matching between the equivalent circuit and the electromagnetic model at the component level. On the other hand, the global correction allows for taking into account the electromagnetic couplings between the components. The important advantage of decomposing the low-fidelity model correction into local and global level is that small number of parameter is utilized at each stage, which substantially simplifies and speeds up the parameter extraction procedure. Another advantage is that the local-global SM results in considerably better generalization capability of the surrogate model (as compared to conventional SM). This leads to improved reliability of the optimization process and its reduced computational cost. The proposed technique is validated using an example of a compact microstrip rat-race coupler (RRC) and compared to previous surrogate-assisted attempts to compact RF structure optimization, including implicit SM and sequential SM.

A simple yet robust and computationally efficient methodology for design optimization of microwave filters is presented. The proposed algorithm exploits variable-fidelity electromagnetic (EM) simulation models and adjoint sensitivities for fast evaluation of EM model response derivatives. Most of the operations are performed on the low-fidelity EM model, whose correction is realized by means of space mapping (SM). In the optimization process, the SM parameters are optimized together with the design itself, which allows us to keep the number of both low- and high-fidelity simulations at low levels. The operation and performance of the method is demonstrated using two examples of waveguide filters.

A low-cost technique for simulation-driven design optimization of compact branch-line couplers (BLCs) is presented. In the first stage, the coupler cells are individually optimized using a pattern search algorithm. In the second stage the entire coupler structure undergoes a fast tuning exploiting fast surrogate model, constructed from cascaded local response surface approximations (RSAs) of the cells. Accurate, high-fidelity EM analysis of the entire coupler structure is only needed at the tuning phase. The final design of the compact BLC (87.6% area reduction compared to conventional coupler) is obtained at the cost of less than three full-wave simulations. The optimized coupler is then successfully applied in the design of miniaturized Butler matrix. © 2014 European Microwave Association.

Reduced-order modeling for thermal recovery processes

Thermal recovery can entail considerably higher costs than conventional oil recovery, so the use of computational optimization techniques in designing and operating these processes may be beneficial. optimization, however, requires many simulations, which results in substantial computational cost. Here, we implement a model-order reduction technique that aims at large reductions in computational requirements. The technique considered, trajectory piecewise linearization (TPWL), entails the representation of new solutions in terms of linearizations around previously simulated (and saved) training solutions. The linearized representation is projected into a low-dimensional space, with the projection matrix constructed through proper orthogonal decomposition of solution "snapshots" generated in the training step. Two idealized problems are considered here: primary production of oil driven by downhole heaters and a simplified model for steam-assisted gravity drainage, where water and steam are treated as a single "effective" phase. The strong temperature dependence of oil viscosity is included in both cases. TPWL results for these systems demonstrate that the method can provide accurate predictions relative to full-order reference solutions. Observed runtime speedups are very substantial, over 2 orders of magnitude for the cases considered. The overhead associated with TPWL model construction is equivalent to the computation time for several full-order simulations (the precise overhead depends on the number of training runs), so the method is only applicable if many simulations are to be performed.

The continuous implementation of shape memory alloys' (SMAs') actuation capabilities in various applications from aerospace to biomedical tools has attracted researchers' interests into design optimization of active systems. Traditional methods of optimization have mostly relied on several iterations of altering and testing different possible design of prototypes seeking the best configuration. This trial and error experimentation method is usually expensive and time consuming. In the recent years the availability of computational analysis has facilitated the optimization process by avoiding the developments of many prototypes in the whole design space. In this work an automated design optimization frameworks is presented especially for the systems including active components. Design exploration of a recently proposed medical device was considered as a case study to elaborate this iterative technique. SMA activated needle is an innovative medical tool to be used in needle-based surgeries aiming the enhancement of the needle tip placement inside the tissue. Different configurations have been assessed by altering the design variables in the assigned domain seeking the maximum needle tip deflection to assure the maximum flexibility of the structure where all the analyses were constrained to the stress level of SMAs to be in the safe range preventing plasticity. A commercially available finite element package was used for the iterative assessments in the optimization approach. The challenging part in any analysis of active components is the incorporation of a suitable material model. For this purpose three experimental setups were developed to get the material properties of SMAs through different responses of the wires. These material properties along with the implementation of Brinson model led to the generation of the isothermal stress strain curves which were defined as material model of the active components in the FE analyses. In this work, we discuss a robust simulation-driven methodology for rapid and reliable design of complex microwave/RF circuits with enhanced functionality. Our approach exploits nested space mapping (NSM) technology, which is dedicated to expedite simulation-driven design optimization of computationally demanding microwave structures with complex topologies. The enhanced functionality of the developed circuits is achieved by means of slow-wave resonant structures (SWRSs), used as replacement components for conventional transmission lines. The NSM is a hierarchical, bottom-up methodology, in which the inner space mapping layer is applied to improve generalization capabilities of the equivalent circuit constructed on the SWRS level, whereas the outer layer is used to enhance the surrogate model of the entire structure of interest. We demonstrate that the NSM significantly improves the performance of traditional surrogate-based optimization routines applied to the design problem of computationally expensive microwave/RF structures with modular topology. The proposed technique is used to design three exemplary microwave/RF circuits with enhanced functionality: two abbreviated microstrip matching transformers and a miniaturized rat-race coupler with harmonic suppression. We also provide a comprehensive comparison with other surrogateassisted methods, as well as supply the reader with basic design guidelines for the state-of-the-art SWRS-based microwave/RF circuits. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
