Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators have recently been developed in the form of torsional tubes that can undergo large twisting deformations. Wing twisting has been investigated as a means to reduce induced drag in cruise conditions in small aircraft, but the actuation hardware required to generate wing twist at larger scales is prohibitively cumbersome. Replacing conventional actuators with SMA torque tubes provides a way to minimize weight of the twisting system but wing structural design then becomes more challenging. This analysis-driven design study examines an SMA torque tube as applied to the twisting wing design problem. A composite skin is considered to maximize wing performance under combined twist and aerodynamic loads. The SMA has been analyzed using a 3-D thermo-mechanical constitutive model while a preliminary study was performed to determine a composite lamina with appropriate unidirectional properties. An optimization was then completed to find an ideal composite layup. This optimization also included the design of a passive torque tube used to properly balance the twist generated by the SMA against that required in the wing. Localized buckling in the twisted wing was also considered and avoided. The product of this optimization was a composite wing that twisted while considering constraints of stress on the SMA. To validate the controllable use of SMA actuators, testing was completed on a scaled wing model fitted with a rapid prototype shell.

Explosive driven Helical Flux Compression Generator (FCG) is a single shot device used to produce very high current. It finds applications in various advanced technologies like plasma research, EMP weapons, high magnetic field generators etc. Single end initiated helical FCG is most widely used among their several forms. In this paper, design of End Cover, a crucial component of a single end initiated FCG through numerical simulation code AUTODYN (R) is investigated. In a single end initiated FCG, explosive filled armature is initiated from one end which causes the armature to expand in a conical manner to the other end. The expanding armature results in inductance collapse and hence current amplification. The End Cover forms one terminal for realising current output, is electrically connected with armature and thus should remain in through contact with it throughout the FCG action. Mechanical design of End Cover is crucial as expanding armature interacts with it during FCG action. If the End Cover is not properly designed, a break in the continuity can occur causing the loss of energy. This loss of energy leads to drastic reduction in the output of this device. Interaction of the FCG End Cover with the expanding aluminium armature under explosive action is studied in detail for various geometries. Through these simulations better insight of the problem is evolved which is otherwise very difficult to capture even with sophisticated experimental techniques. An optimum design of the End Cover for a single end initiated FCG is suggested.

We present a case study for iterative set point optimizing control, the control of a ternary chromatographic separation process for which structural and parametric model uncertainty must be taken into account. The process considered here is a continuous switched chromatographic multicolumn separation process with high purity and yield requirements. In each iteration, the optimal cyclic steady state of a system that is governed by partial differential equations is required. This is done efficiently by a new one-shot optimization method, that employs a two-grid Newton-Picard approach. We demonstrate the control algorithm by a simulation study with experimentally determined isotherm parameters under realistic plant-model mismatch conditions. Despite the large model uncertainty, the plant is driven to its true optimum, increasing the productivity of the plant to 99.8% of its maximum while decreasing the solvent consumption by about 37 %.

Thermal recovery can entail considerably higher costs than conventional oil recovery, so the use of computational optimization techniques in designing and operating these processes may be beneficial. optimization, however, requires many simulations, which results in substantial computational cost. Here, we implement a model-order reduction technique that aims at large reductions in computational requirements. The technique considered, trajectory piecewise linearization (TPWL), entails the representation of new solutions in terms of linearizations around previously simulated (and saved) training solutions. The linearized representation is projected into a low-dimensional space, with the projection matrix constructed through proper orthogonal decomposition of solution "snapshots" generated in the training step. Two idealized problems are considered here: primary production of oil driven by downhole heaters and a simplified model for steam-assisted gravity drainage, where water and steam are treated as a single "effective" phase. The strong temperature dependence of oil viscosity is included in both cases. TPWL results for these systems demonstrate that the method can provide accurate predictions relative to full-order reference solutions. Observed runtime speedups are very substantial, over 2 orders of magnitude for the cases considered. The overhead associated with TPWL model construction is equivalent to the computation time for several full-order simulations (the precise overhead depends on the number of training runs), so the method is only applicable if many simulations are to be performed.

The Operations Simulator for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST;http://***) allows the planning of LSST observations that obey explicit science driven observing specifications, patterns, schema, and priorities, while optimizing against the constraints placed by design-specific opto-mechanical system performance of the telescope facility, site specific conditions as well as additional scheduled and unscheduled downtime. It has a detailed model to simulate the external conditions with real weather history data from the site, a fully parameterized kinematic model for the internal conditions of the telescope, camera and dome, and serves as a prototype for an automatic scheduler for the real time survey operations with LSST. The Simulator is a critical tool that has been key since very early in the project, to help validate the design parameters of the observatory against the science requirements and the goals from specific science programs. A simulation run records the characteristics of all observations (e. g., epoch, sky position, seeing, sky brightness) in a MySQL database, which can be queried for any desired purpose. Derivative information digests of the observing history are made with an analysis package called simulation Survey Tools for Analysis and Reporting (SSTAR). Merit functions and metrics have been designed to examine how suitable a specific simulation run is for several different science applications. Software to efficiently compare the efficacy of different survey strategies for a wide variety of science applications using such a growing set of metrics is under development. A recent restructuring of the code allows us to a) use "look-ahead" strategies that avoid cadence sequences that cannot be completed due to observing constraints;and b) examine alternate optimization strategies, so that the most efficient scheduling algorithm(s) can be identified and used: even few-percent efficiency gains will create substantive scientific opportunit

The future airplane will be faced with complex environment, complex mission and complex combat process. In order to elevate the capability of airplane mission and integrate task in application layer, we discussed the conception, running architecture and validation environment of task synthesis in this paper. The task synthesis technology contains situation awareness synthesis model, assessment and decision-making synthesis model and implementation and management synthesis model. In order to elevating the capability and the quality of the response, optimization and implement, the synthetic model of task system based on mission purpose and mission architecture is established to confirm the capacity, purpose and organization structure of mission system. The verification environment of task synthesis is used to realize development and demonstration. The whole process of the task is driven by the combat scenario and complied by mission synthesis and integrated simulation. Finally, airplane air-to-air intercept scenario is tested and verified. The simulations show that task synthesis technology not only helps to complete mission effectively, but also dispatches management function and physical resource rationally.

Surfactant-Polymer (SP) flooding has become an attractive Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) method. Defining chemical concentrations, chemical types and an injection schedule, according to geological features of a reservoir and well pattern, is key to making decisions for reservoir management. In this paper, we introduce an innovative approach for EOR optimization under geological uncertainty by integrating a reservoir geological property modelling and a robust optimizer. Multiple reservoir realizations are generated automatically by geology-driven modeling software and sent directly to an optimizer to analyze the effect of single or multi-parameters on objective functions such as cumulative oil production and net present value (NPV). Clay minerals play an important role in chemical flooding, but it is rarely included in the reservoir simulation. In this study, the distribution and proportion of clay are investigated in terms of facies and its relationship with porosity and permeability for a sandstone reservoir. Different facies and petrophysical properties are geostatiscally generated in a geologic manner that significantly improves the quality of history matching and optimization processes. It is found that SP flooding has the highest oil recovery factor in comparison with waterflooding, polymer flooding and surfactant flooding, and it demonstrates good performances even in high clay content reservoirs. The optimal formulation of SP and polymer slugs and injection schedule were proposed. The effect of clay content in cumulative oil and NPV were addressed, in which the more clay content is the lower NPVs obtain. A comprehensive geological uncertainty analysis has been performed for: (1) facies distribution only;(2) facies distribution and proportion. The results indicated that NPV uncertainty is less than 2.25% for (1) and about 4.18% to 5.68% for (2).
