Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has proven to be a particularly popular evolutionary algorithm for the tuning of PID controllers, due to its relative simplicity and suitability as a function approximator. This paper presents a new modeling technique, featuring co-simulation between Matlab and PSIM, a specialist control and power electronics simulation environment. The tuned PID is applied to a buck converter, driven by a PV cell. The novel solution is compared with and evaluated against a system which is tuned using a traditional method. The simulation results indicate that the controller developed using the PSO algorithm achieves a faster response time without adversely affecting peak errors. There are added benefits of this new approach, in terms of a shorter time scale for conceptual model development.

A robust approach for low-cost design optimization of planar microwave filters is presented. Our technique exploits response surface approximation (RSA) models of filter cells as well as space mapping (SM) as an optimization engine. The RSA models are constructed beforehand using sampled EM-simulation data of the cells of interest. The filter structure of a required order is subsequently assembled by cascading selected models. The process of adjusting the geometry parameters of the cells is realized by means of surrogate-based optimization with the combined RSA model as an underlying low-fidelity model, which is corrected using input SM and frequency scaling. The design optimization cost is very low and corresponds to a few EM simulations of the entire filter structure. The proposed technique is illustrated using several examples of bandpass filters constructed using three types of basic cells: stubs, transmission lines, and stepped impedance resonators.

A low-cost technique for simulation-driven design optimization of compact branch-line couplers (BLCs) is presented. In the first stage, the coupler cells are individually optimized using a pattern search algorithm. In the second stage the entire coupler structure undergoes a fast tuning exploiting fast surrogate model, constructed from cascaded local response surface approximations (RSAs) of the cells. Accurate, high-fidelity EM analysis of the entire coupler structure is only needed at the tuning phase. The final design of the compact BLC (87.6% area reduction compared to conventional coupler) is obtained at the cost of less than three full-wave simulations. The optimized coupler is then successfully applied in the design of miniaturized Butler matrix.

The rapid progress in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and the evolution from a limited set of well-established applications, examples, in automotive industry, print heads, and digital light projection, to other fields mainly driven by consumer applications (such as image stabilization, smart phones, game consoles, etc.) opens a new market for these devices. It simultaneously creates the need for fast, efficient, and adequate design and optimization tools not only for stand-alone devices, but also for entire multiphysics microsystems comprising the MEMS component, the attached control and read-out circuitry and the package, while additionally considering environmental impacts potentially affecting the system functionality. This paper provides an overview of system-level modelling methodologies and tools.

In this work we examine how to optimally plan for multi-channel communication campaigns. We primarily consider proactive campaigns that can take advantage of predicted risk or other behavioral propensity measure relating to the intended communication recipient(s). These predicted or estimated measures identify portions of the population that the servicer/campaign originator is interested in targeting. For example, in the application of loan servicing various risk segments low, medium and high predicted risk can be delineated and targeted differently. Each group not only has a different propensity to pay back a loan or liability but also different levels of sensitivity/conversion rates (to current status) with regards to communication campaigns. First we derive risk models that can predict the payback risk associated with loans at different times. The prediction techniques are not covered in this work. We then formulate the risk-driven campaign optimization problem and sub-problems, and solve them using various efficient dynamic techniques. Two main sub-problems are proposed relating to either single-or multi-channel communication. Using empirical values of cost structures and response rates from pilots we conducted in financial services, we were also able to run simulations to delineate regimes of optimal operation that might be appealing to loan servicing entities. Our simulation results demonstrate the optimal operational conditions with respect to different risk profiles, and at the same time, show how these optimal operational conditions change with respect to user defined parameters such as preference of one communication channel over the other.

A planar (5 by 5) array of microstrip antennas is designed using full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation and the surrogate-based optimization (SBO) methodology. The design goals include reduction of the sidelobe levels as well as keeping reflection signals low (better than -10dB) at the array element terminals. Our design approach exploits both low-fidelity EM simulation model of the array used as a prediction tool that, after suitable correction, guides the optimization process towards the high-fidelity EM model optimum. The design process starts from a uniform array configuration and comprises two major stages: radiation pattern optimization and reflection/mutual coupling minimization. Despite a large number of designable parameters, an optimized design is obtained at the cost of 15 equivalent high-fidelity EM simulations of the entire array.

Xerox has invented, tested, and implemented a novel class of operations-research-based productivity improvement offerings that has been described in Rai et al. (2009) and was a finalist in the 2008 Franz Edelman competition. The software toolkit that enables the optimization of print shops is data-driven and simulation based. It enables quick modeling of complex print production environments under the cellular production framework. The software toolkit automates several steps of the modeling process by taking declarative inputs from the end-user and then automatically generating complex simulation models that are used to determine improved design and operating points. This paper describes the addition of another layer of automation consisting of simulation-based optimization using simulated-annealing that enables automated search of a large number of design alternatives in the presence of operational constraints to determine a cost-optimal solution. The results of the application of this approach to a real-world problem are also described.

In order to solve the lack of traditional combat simulation system development, adapt to large-scale and series development demands, the paper use the technology of model-drivensimulation development to carry out the research of the interface data development methods of the combat simulation system, and provide a new idea about realizing the interface information integrated optimization design. First of all, describes the method and process of building the XML data model. Then, gives the principles of the general simulation UI based on data model. Third, details the technique of model-driven Interface information generating and parsing. Finally, analyzes the automatic generation method for Interface information simulation development code framework.

An evolution driven controller design approach has been applied to an aeroservoelastic model of a large passenger aircraft. The aeroservoelastic model comprises structural, aerodynamic and flight dynamics related elements and the chosen controller architecture is based on Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion. The evolutionary concept has played a significant role in the optimization of the proposed NDI controller structure by providing tuned controller parameters which meet the designed fitness function criteria imposed through the optimization problem formulation. The proposed fitness function combines significant controller stability evaluation criteria into a single abstraction. The use of a robust optimization framework based on the genetic algorithms has allowed the suggested form of multi-criteria optimization definition. The suitability of the evolutionary optimization has been successfully tested on a set of examples, which accounted for rigid body aircraft dynamics as well as for the case with elastic structural modes. Time-domain simulation results have shown the compliance of the tuned controller performance to its anticipated behavior.

Many inputs for simulationoptimization models are assumed to come from known distributions. When such distributions are obtained from small sample sizes, the parameters of these distributions may be associated with an "uncertainty set" or ranges. The presence of this uncertainty means that one or more solutions may be optimal depending on which parameters from the set are used. In this paper, we present a graphical methodology that combines bootstrap sampling and cross-evaluation techniques to visualize the data driven support for alternative solutions for problems in which distribution parameters are estimated using small sample sizes. We illustrate the methodology using a voting machine allocation problem.
