Fast design of multimode interference (MMI) power dividers for integrated optics circuits is discussed. Our approach exploits surrogate models built from discrete electromagnetic (EM) simulations. These models - after a suitable correction and through proper handling - serve as computationally efficient predictors in simulation driven optimization of high index contrast components. The operation and performance of the proposed technique is demonstrated with design of compact power dividers of different power splitting ratios. The designed power dividers are supposed to operate equally well for two polarizations.

Xerox has invented, tested, and implemented a novel class of operations-research-based productivity improvement offerings that has been described in Rai et al. (2009) and was a finalist in the 2008 Franz Edelman competition. The software toolkit that enables the optimization of print shops is data-driven and simulation based. It enables quick modeling of complex print production environments under the cellular production framework. The software toolkit automates several steps of the modeling process by taking declarative inputs from the end-user and then automatically generating complex simulation models that are used to determine improved design and operating points. This paper describes the addition of another layer of automation consisting of simulation-based optimization using simulated-annealing that enables automated search of a large number of design alternatives in the presence of operational constraints to determine a cost-optimal solution. The results of the application of this approach to a real-world problem are also described.

In recent years, the tremendous development of agriculture sector has been driven by the growing human population. Therefore, the crop productions need to be increased to fulfill the food demands. In order to do it, the amount of fertilizer used, might have been more than required and unabsorbed fertilizer by plants usually washed into water sources like rivers, ponds, and wells. Hence, the water will be polluted and unsafe to consume. Therefore, it is important to determine the contamination level in natural water resources. This paper discusses the development of a low-cost sensor array based on planar electromagnetic sensors to determine the contamination levels of two common fertilizer components which are nitrate and sulphate in water sources. Three types of sensor array, were suggested: parallel, star, and delta. The modeling and simulation of all type of sensor array were carried out using COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2 software to calculate the sensors' impedance value. The contamination state was simulated by altering the electrical properties values of the environment domain of the model to represent water contamination. The simulations results show that all types of sensor array are sensitive to conductivity, sigma and permittivity, epsilon. Furthermore, a set of experiments was conducted to determine the relationship between the sensor's impedance and the waters' nitrate and sulphate contamination. The performance of the system was observed where the sensors were tested with the additional of distilled water with different concentrations of amount of potassium nitrate and potassium sulphate. The sensitivity of the developed sensors was evaluated where the best sensor was selected. Based on the outcomes of the experiments, the star sensor array placement has the highest sensitivity and can be used to measure the water content in the water.

Discrete event system specification (DEVS) has been widely used within modeling and simulation to design, verify, and implement complex reactive systems. DEVS provides a robust formalism for designing systems using event-driven, state-based models in which timing information is explicitly defined. In this paper, we present an overview of a DEVS-based hardware design, synthesis, and optimization methodology. Within this approach, hardware DEVS (HDEVS) specifications can be synthesized to hardware, during which the event-driven model and explicit timing allow for an efficient hardware realization using globally asynchronous, locally synchronous design approach. Additionally, we present an optimization method for reducing power consumption through optimal frequency mapping and clock gating of individual components while ensuring system latency constraints are achieved. We further demonstrate the resulting power consumption savings for activity-driven forest fire and asthma health management applications targeting two low-power FPGA devices.

There is a drive towards minimising operating clearances within turbomachines in order to limit reverse leakage flows and hence improve their efficiency. This increases the likelihood of contact occurring between the blade and the casing, which can give rise to high amplitude vibration. Modelling this interaction represents a significant computational challenge. The non-linear contact precludes the use of well-established linear methods, and is also subject to uncertainties: the contact law is imprecisely known and the exact geometry of imperfections that trigger contact may be unknown. In this paper a novel approach is presented that aims to account for the uncertainties associated with the non-linearity in a non-probabilistic way. The worst case is sought, by framing the system as a constrained anti-optimisation problem. The target to be maximised represents a metric of the output of interest. The degrees of freedom of the anti-optimisation are the non-linear input forces (considered as external loads), and the constraints are designed to capture what is thought to be known about the non-linear contact law and geometry. A realistic three-dimensional model of a turbine blade is used to explore the approach, with contact considered at the leading and trailing edge. The blade dynamics are described in terms of a linear transfer function matrix and the target metric of interest is chosen to be the peak displacement of the contact points. The non-linearity is taken to result from an offset shaft, giving a sinusoidal clearance variation. The blade is driven at constant frequency and the scope of the study is limited to finding bounds on periodic solutions. A variety of constraint conditions are explored that describe aspects of the non-linearity. For example, only compressive forces are permitted (no tension from the contact), and the displacement must not exceed the clearance. A planar (5 by 5) array of microstrip antennas is designed using full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation and the surrogate-based optimization (SBO) methodology. The design goals include reduction of the sidelobe levels as well as keeping reflection signals low (better than -10dB) at the array element terminals. Our design approach exploits both low-fidelity EM simulation model of the array used as a prediction tool that, after suitable correction, guides the optimization process towards the high-fidelity EM model optimum. The design process starts from a uniform array configuration and comprises two major stages: radiation pattern optimization and reflection/mutual coupling minimization. Despite a large number of designable parameters, an optimized design is obtained at the cost of 15 equivalent high-fidelity EM simulations of the entire array.

In view of large range change of operating conditions of the coal-fired power units and difficulties in building global model of turbine heat rate, this paper presents data-driven dynamic energy consumption model using the property that the just-in-time learning local modeling approach can ensure the model accuracy in the large range change of operation conditions. Firstly, based on the technology mechanism analysis of operation process, the instrumental variable of energy consumption model is determined by using grey relational analysis. Secondly, distance, direction, and the direction trend between samples are all considered to design the similarity measurement criterion and obtain the modeling neighborhood dataset. Thirdly, the weighting factor based on the similarity of modeling data and the parameter optimization based on the niche differential evolution algorithm are introduced to the weighted least square support vector machine, a dynamic energy consumption model is build. Finally, the active update strategy is adopted to realize the selective preservation of the new data in model database. simulation results show that the proposed method can more accurately predict the turbine heat rate, and provide the basic data for operation optimization and energy saving diagnosis of coal-fired power units.

A methodology for low-cost simulation-driven design of a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity antennas is presented. Our approach exploits variable-fidelity electromagnetic (EM) models of the antenna structure of interest, response surface approximations and frequency scaling. Coarse-discretization EM simulation data is used as a low-fidelity model, which - upon optimization - provides a reasonable approximation of the optimum design. The design is further refined by means of suitably corrected response surface model constructed again from coarse-discretization simulation data. The entire design process requires just a few evaluations of the original, high-fidelity EM antenna model. Our considerations are illustrated using a specific example of a SIW cavity antenna with total design cost corresponding to about 6 evaluations of the high-fidelity model.

A three-year research project about water grid technology ("WATERGRID research project") is led by ARIN - the company managing water distribution in the city of Naples - in a partnership with IBM and the University of Naples. Objectives of the project's initial phase include designing and prototyping a subsystem for grid modelling, optimization and simulation (GMOS). The GMOS subsystem implements state-of-theart software kernels for the simulation of water distribution networks, including modules for the calibration of the hydraulic model and for an optimal partitioning of the grid. This paper illustrates general findings in applying model-driven software engineering to the architecture and design of the GMOS subsystem which largely abstract from the specific nature of the distribution grid as they could equally apply to the modelling, optimization and simulation of gas and electricity distribution networks.
