modeling the thermal environment of data centers, including prediction of the air flow and temperature distributions can be computationally intensive using CFD. Reduced order models or data-driven meta-models are necessary to provide real-time assessment of optimum operating conditions for data centers to reduce energy usage. Here, a simulation-based Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach is employed as a predictive tool. A model for a basic single cold aisle data center configuration is analyzed using the commercial CFD software FloTHERM. The simulation results are used to generate a database for training and cross validation of a primary ANN corresponding to a specific set of input and output operating conditions. Good agreement is achieved between the CFD and ANN based model predictions for maximum rack inlet temperatures over a range of operating conditions. In addition, by combining the ANN with a cost function based Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA), the operating conditions can be inversely predicted for desired outputs (e.g. rack inlet temperatures). The total simulation time for the ANN-MOGA approach is reduced significantly compared to a fully CFD-based optimization methodology.

Business information supply chain management in today's business climate characterized are with high uncertainty. Globalization of business, outsourcing, shorter transaction cycles, and high end user expectations require effective solutions for business information supply chain. simulation can be a valuable tool for business information supply chain analysis, planning, optimization, evaluation, and risk management. This paper presents a methodology for modeling both structure and dynamics of complex business information supply chain based on process approach. It also describes the model-driven simulation methodology and the main components of the simulation software solution: model database, process library, knowledge base, and execution engine. Finally, simulation results of the case supply network are presented.

A robust methodology for simulation-driven design optimization of UWB antennas is presented. The key component of the proposed framework is the low-fidelity model constructed through the response-surface approximation of the coarse-discretization EM simulation data of the antenna structure under consideration. The low-fidelity model is subsequently used by the modified manifold mapping (MM) algorithm that is capable of yielding an optimized antenna design at a low cost of a handful of high-fidelity antenna simulations. The modifications introduced to the MM algorithm ensure its good convergence properties. Two UWB antenna design examples are presented.

Biologists have been investigating the plant defense response to virus infections for a long time. Nevertheless, its model has still not been developed. One of the reasons is the deficiency in numerical kinetic data that brings up the importance of the expert knowledge. Therefore, we based our work on acquiring domain knowledge of biological pathways which provided a basis for the construction of a dynamic mathematical model. The goal of our work was to model the major pathway of the plant defense response - the salicylic acid pathway - and determine its dynamic parameters that are in correspondence with the knowledge acquired from the biology experts. For this purpose, we first selected the Hybrid Functional Petri Net formalism to represent the model due to its intuitive graph representation important for the biologists and its mathematical capabilities necessary for the simulation. The salicylic acid model was manually constructed and curated. In addition, the knowledge related to the model variables was acquired from the biology scientists and formalized in the form of constraints. This enabled an automatic optimization search for the model parameters that violate the minimal number of constraints. If the simulation results do not match the expert expectations, the network structure and the constraint definition are revised and the optimization parameter search is repeated. The final results of our system are both simulation results and optimized model parameters, which provide an insight into the biological system. Our constraint-driven optimization approach allows for an efficient exploration of the dynamic behavior of the biological models and, at the same time, increases their reliability.

Analog circuit design is often based on a large number of simulations which strongly depends on the mastery of CAD tools and competence of the designer. In this context, the automated design of analog architectures becomes a necessity of design to solve the problem of simulation time. More importantly, accelerating the design cycle of the analog block, taking into account many constraints and finally formalizing the experience of analogiciens designers. In this paper we present a method for modeling the performance parameters of analog architectures, this is for the optimization of optimal sizing of transistors constituting the circuit to achieve the desired characteristics. This work is done following a modeling of the functioning of the Operational Amplifier using mathematical formulation software “Maxima”. The formulation is based on the SPICE level 1 model of the MOS transistor. Finally, the elaboration of the model is developed under MATLAB. The proposed method is presented and applied to the modeling and design of a Folded Cascode bulk driven OTA using a 0.35μm CMOS technology. simulations with Cadence Spectrum are presented and compared with manual calculations and also to numerical calculations that have shown the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Then, we determine the optimal parameters of the operational amplifier, which accord, maximum, to the desired specifications.

At the nanoscale domain, the simulation, design, and optimization time of the circuits have increased significantly due to high-integration density, increasing technology constraints, and complex device models. This necessitates fast design space exploration techniques to meet the shorter time to market driven by consumer electronics. This paper presents non-polynomial metamodels (surrogate models) using neural networks to reduce the design optimization time of complex nano-CMOS circuit with no sacrifice on accuracy. The physical design aware neural networks are trained and used as metamodels to predict frequency, locking time, and power of a PLL circuit. Different architectures for neural networks are compared with traditional polynomial functions that have been generated for the same circuit characteristics. Thorough experimental results show that only 100 sample points are sufficient for neural networks to predict the output of circuits with 21 design parameters within 3% accuracy, which improves the accuracy by 56% over polynomial metamodels. The generated metamodels are used to perform optimization of the PLL using a bee colony algorithm. It is observed that the non-polynomial (using neural networks) metamodels achieve more accurate results than polynomial metamodels in shorter optimization time.

Contemporary maritime piracy presents a significant threat to the global shipping industry, with annual costs estimated at up to US$ 12bn. To address the threat, commanders and policymakers need new data-driven decision-support tools that will allow them to plan and execute counter-piracy activities most effectively. So far, however, the provision of such tools has been very limited. To fill this gap, we have employed the multi-agent approach and developed a novel suite of computational tools and techniques for operational management of counter-piracy operations. A comprehensive agent-based simulation enables the stakeholders to assess the efficiency of a range of piracy counter-measures, including recommended transit corridors, escorted convoys, group transit schemes, route randomization and navy patrol deployments. Decision-theoretic and game-theoretic optimization techniques further assist in discovering counter-measure configurations that yield the best trade-off between transportation security and cost. We demonstrate our approach on two case studies based on the problems and solutions currently explored by the maritime security community. Our work is the first integrated application of agent-based techniques to high-seas maritime security and opens a wide range of directions for follow-up research and development.

In this paper, we report on our ongoing research on simulation-based information security risk assessment and multi-objective optimization of investment in security controls. We outline a methodological framework that accounts for characteristics of the organization, its information infrastructure, assets to be protected, the particular threat sources it faces, and the decision-makers' risk preferences. This framework comprises (i) ontological modeling of security knowledge, (ii) dynamic attack graph generation techniques, (iii) probabilistic simulation of attacks by goal-driven threat agents, (iv) meta-heuristic identification of efficient portfolios of information security controls, and (v) interactive decision support. These components facilitate novel techniques to infer possible routes of attacks and generate attack graphs based on attackers' motivation, objectives, capabilities, and available modes of entry and to use this inferred knowledge to simulate attacks on an organization's modeled infrastructure. The method supports decision makers evaluating potential security control investments in striking a balance between monetary and non-monetary criteria regarding risks, costs, and benefits. We are currently in the process of developing a prototypical implementation of the framework that will be used to evaluate the approach through application case studies.
