This paper proposes a novel variable torsion stiffness (VTS) aiming on biomechanical applications like prosthetic knee joints. By varying the effective length of a torsional elastic element via a relocatable counter bearing, the stiffness of a rotational joint is adjusted. This functional concept is described in detail by the authors as well as the design of such VTS joints. Additionally, analytical models for the transfer behaviour of drivetrain and stiffness control are derived. These are used for a simulative evaluation of a pendulum driven by a VTS unit. Based on the results of this simulation, the power requirements of VTS are analysed. Furthermore, an analysis of its structural strength is presented. For practical comprehensibility, the example of the design of a prosthetic knee joint is taken up for several times in this paper. Finally, the concept, modeling and design of VTS as well as the simulation results are concluded and discussed in a final assessment and in comparison to other contemporary concepts.

Due to energy efficiency requirements of modern embedded systems, chip vendors are inclined towards multicore architectures with different types of processing engines and non-uniform interconnect fabrics. At the same time multiple applications are intended to run concurrently on the devices with such heterogeneous architectures. This rapid growth in the complexity of the hardware and its use cases imposes new challenges on the software development tools. To overcome this complexity, model of computation based approaches are becoming increasingly promising. Synchronous Data Flow (SDF) is a popular specification formalism for streaming applications with inherently concurrent nature. However, the parallelism expressed in the original representation is often not sufficient to maximally exploit the potential of multicore platforms. In this paper we present a holistic methodology for improving the throughput of streaming applications while mapping them onto heterogeneous architectures. The approach uses transformations that adapt the parallelism in SDF according to available platform resources. We use a genetic algorithm to explore SDF instances with the objective of maximizing throughput on a target platform. Our model supports architecture heterogeneity and multi-application scenarios. The experiments indicate that our approach outperforms other techniques for exploiting parallelism on a single application in most of the test cases and enables concurrent applications optimization.

The negative polarity rod pinch diode (NPRPD) is a potential millimeter spot size radiography source for high voltage generators (4 to 8 MV) [Cooperstein et al., "Considerations of rod-pinch diode operation in negative polarity for radiography," in Proceedings of the 14th IEEE Pulsed Power conference, 2003, pp. 975-978]. The NPRPD consists of a small diameter (few mm) cylindrical anode extending from the front end of the vacuum cell through a thin annular cathode, held by a central conductor. The polarity has been inverted when compared to the original rod pinch diode [Cooperstein et al., "Theoretical modeling and experimental characterization of a rod-pinch diode," Phys. Plasmas 8(10), 4618-4636 (2001)] in order to take advantage from the maximal x-ray emission toward the anode holder at such a voltage [Swanekamp et al., "Evaluation of self-magnetically pinched diodes up to 10 MV as high resolution flash X-ray sources," IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 32(5), 2004-2016 (2004). We have studied this diode at 4.5 MV, driven by the ASTERIX generator [Raboisson et al., "ASTERIX, a high intensity X-ray generator," in Proceedings of the 7th IEEE Pulsed Power conference, 1989, pp. 567-570.]. This generator, made up of a capacitor bank and a Blumlein line, was initially designed to test the behavior of electronic devices under irradiation. In our experiments, the vacuum diode has been modified in order to set up flash a radiographic diode [Etchessahar et al., "Negative polarity rod pinch diode experiments on the ASTERIX generator," in conference Records-Abstracts, 37th IEEE International conference on Plasma Science, 2010]. The experiments and numerical simulations presented here allowed the observation and analysis of various physical phenomena associated with the diode operation. Electromagnetic (EM) simulation is ubiquitous in contemporary antenna design process. For many structures, including ultrawideband or dielectric resonator antennas, EM-simulation-driven optimization is the only way to adjust the geometry parameters so that given performance specifications are satisfied. On the other hand, accurate full-wave antenna simulation is computationally expensive so that employing the EM solver directly in the optimization loop may be impractical. In this paper, several computationally efficient simulation-driven antenna design techniques are discussed. All of the methods exploit coarse-discretization EM models of the structures under consideration. After suitable correction, these models serve as reliable prediction tools that guide the optimization process. As the coarse-discretization model is computationally much cheaper than the original, high-fidelity antenna model, the cost of the design process is greatly reduced. The specific approaches presented here include multi-fidelity optimization, adaptive design specifications and space mapping with kriging-based coarse models. Application examples are given.

In this paper we present a new approach to solving multi-stage stochastic decision models in the presence of constraints. The models themselves are stochastic linear programs (SLP), but we presume that their deterministic equivalent problems are too large to be solved exactly. We seek an asymptotically optimum solution by simulating the stochastic decomposition (SD) algorithmic process, originally designed for two-stage SLPs. When SD is implemented in a time-staged manner the algorithm begins to take the flavor of a simulation leading to what we refer to as optimization simulation. Among its major advantages, it can work directly with sample paths, and this feature makes the new algorithm much easier to integrate within a simulation. We also overcome certain limitations such as a stage-wise independence assumption required by other sampling-based algorithms for multi-stage stochastic programming. Finally, we also discuss how these methods can be interpreted as close relatives of approximate dynamic programming.

This paper introduces a novel link-driven, 1 DOF, three phalanges robotic finger. In order to improve the grasping performance of BHG-1 hand which is driven by tendon system, a link-driven finger is proposed. First, the design requirements of new finger are given on the basis of the new grasping scheme of BHG-1 hand. Then, the analysis and optimization design procedure of the linkage for the robotic finger is carried out. Through the linkage movement space analysis, the linkage is skillfully embedded in the finger body in the 3D finger modeling process. At last, the grasping simulation of the finger shows that the finger meets the design requirements of BHG-1 hand and has excellent grasping capability and adaptability.

This paper presents an event-driven simulation-based optimization method for solving the train timetabling problem to minimize the total traveling time in the hybrid single and double track railway networks. The simulation approach is well applied for solving the train timetabling problems. In present simulation model, the stations and block sections of the railway network are respectively considered as the nodes and edges of the network model. The developed software named SIMARAIL has the capability of scheduling trains in large scale networks respecting the capacity constraints and infrastructure characteristics. This simulation model for railway timetabling is based on a detailed microscopic infrastructure model, which includes the most detailed infrastructure information. This research is based on integration of a discrete event simulation and GA meta-heuristic algorithm to generate near optimal train timetable. In other words, the simulation model is used to construct a feasible solution for train timetabling problems.

The development of increasingly complex robots in recent years has been characterized by an extensive use of physics-based simulations for controller design and optimization. Today, a variety of open-source and commercial simulators exist for this purpose for mobile and industrial robots. However, existing simulation engines still lack support for the emerging class of tendon-driven robots. In this paper, an innovative simulation framework for the simulation of tendon-driven robots is presented. It consists of a generic physics simulator capable of utilizing CAD robot models and a set of additional tools for simulation control, data acquisition and system investigation. The framework software architecture has been designed using component-based development principles to facilitate the framework extension and customization. Furthermore, for inter-component communication, the operating-system and programming language independent Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) [1] has been used which simplifies the integration of the framework into existing software environments.

Preselection of Reservoir Models From a Geostatistics-Based Petrophysical Seismic Inversion

A new geostatistics-based seismic-inversion method is introduced in this paper for determining reservoir models consistent with base seismic information. The proposed methodology entails two steps, with only the second being examined in this paper. First, cubes of acoustic velocities or impedances are derived from seismic inversion. Second, these data are incorporated into a matching process to identify reservoir models leading to acoustic responses close to the reference acoustic data. The parameterization of the facies and petrophysical properties populating the reservoir models is based upon the gradual-deformation method (GDM), which relies on geostatistical concepts. This particular feature makes it possible to change the spatial distribution of the property of interest from a few parameters while preserving its spatial variability. The matching process is driven from a global optimization algorithm known as the particle-swarm optimization (PSO). Such a global approach is reasonable for the problem considered because the forward modeling is very fast. A variant of the PSO algorithm is implemented to take advantage of the GDM properties. This approach yields reservoir models that honor the seismic data better than those derived from stochastic simulation only with seismic used as a secondary variable. A numerical experiment is then presented to stress the applicability of the proposed matching methodology: The GDM-based PSO approach is used to identify facies reservoir models and water/oil contact consistent with some reference acoustic P-wave impedances.
