Preselection of Reservoir Models From a Geostatistics-Based Petrophysical Seismic Inversion

A new geostatistics-based seismic-inversion method is introduced in this paper for determining reservoir models consistent with base seismic information. The proposed methodology entails two steps, with only the second being examined in this paper. First, cubes of acoustic velocities or impedances are derived from seismic inversion. Second, these data are incorporated into a matching process to identify reservoir models leading to acoustic responses close to the reference acoustic data. The parameterization of the facies and petrophysical properties populating the reservoir models is based upon the gradual-deformation method (GDM), which relies on geostatistical concepts. This particular feature makes it possible to change the spatial distribution of the property of interest from a few parameters while preserving its spatial variability. The matching process is driven from a global optimization algorithm known as the particle-swarm optimization (PSO). Such a global approach is reasonable for the problem considered because the forward modeling is very fast. A variant of the PSO algorithm is implemented to take advantage of the GDM properties. This approach yields reservoir models that honor the seismic data better than those derived from stochastic simulation only with seismic used as a secondary variable. A numerical experiment is then presented to stress the applicability of the proposed matching methodology: The GDM-based PSO approach is used to identify facies reservoir models and water/oil contact consistent with some reference acoustic P-wave impedances.

A computationally efficient algorithm for simulation-driven design optimization of microwave structures is proposed. Our approach exploits variable-fidelity electromagnetic models of the structure under consideration. The low-fidelity model is optimized using a response surface approximation technique. The high-fidelity model is refined by space mapping with polynomial interpolation of the low-fidelity model data used as an underlying coarse model. Our algorithm is carefully developed to minimize the number off evaluations of both the low-and high-fidelity model in the optimization process. The operation and efficiency of the approach is demonstrated through design of a microstrip filter and an ultrawideband monopole antenna. A comparison with other design approaches, including the direct high-fidelity model optimization, is also presented.

In most cases, the adjustment of antenna geometry parameters requires repetitive electromagnetic (EM) simulations. As accurate, high-fidelity EM simulations are computationally expensive, an automated optimization process by embedding the EM solver directly into the optimization algorithm may be prohibitive. In this paper, a simple yet efficient simulation-driven design methodology of antenna structures is discussed and demonstrated. Our approach exploits a family of EM-based models of increasing discretization density that are sequentially optimized with the optimal design of the lower-fidelity model being the initial design for the higher-fidelity one. The design is further refined using a suitable response surface approximation model. We show that-using this technique-an optimized antenna design can be obtained at a low computational cost. Two examples are provided: a wideband microstrip antenna and a double ring antenna. © 2011 IEEE.

Current economy is changing really fast because of some different reasons: the globalization of markets, new arising economies like China and Latin America accessing new resources with new pricing policies as well as the world crisis that has driven down the demand in most western countries. The importance of logistics, due to these aspects, is growing in all industrial fields and obviously also the maritime logistics is strongly affected by these aspects. In this scenario, characterized by big changes, enterprises need to be careful in taking decision and simulation is one of the best ways for supporting companies in analyzing data and finding effective and innovative solutions to increase production capability and to save more money. The proposed research is focused on petrochemical logistics. The authors present a new approach based on modeling and simulation (M&S), in order to face maritime logistics problems and to support decisions maker in evaluating different alternatives and strategies with particular attention to fleets management and ports sequencing in ship missions (Bruzzone et al., 2004). The research highlights benefits and advantages of the simulation use as support for decisions making in term of resources management, time and costs optimization and savings evaluation. The authors develop conceptual models for petrochemical logistic network, by analyzing the related problems and proposing a simulation based approach to identify innovative solutions and strategies. In particular they propose the simulator MARLON (MARitime LOgistic Network), that is devoted to support decisions makers in ship costs evaluation in different scenarios by taking into account stochastic variables (such as weather condition during the navigation) that have influence on navigation time, load/unload operations time as well as ship and missions costs.

This presentation will include: • Computer modeling of the extrusion blowmolding process. As an example, a water cooler bottle with handle will be showcased. The modeling process will be briefly described with its required inputs and outputs. • With the objectives of minimizing the bottle weight while maintaining a certain minimum thickness at a certain location, an optimization problem will be defined. The optimization problem will drive the computer model predicting the material distribution. Different optimization scenarios will be discussed. • The variable material distribution obtained from the blowmolding computer model will be mapped onto an FEA model for structural simulation. The FEA simulation will take into account the final variable material distribution which makes the FEA simulation very realistic. Examples of the FEA tests that will be discussed are linear buckling (top load) and drop tests. The most obvious approach to package environmental impact reduction is reducing its weight. As an added advantage, the package cost is also reduced. However, a package needs to also meet certain structural characteristics regarding its top load strength and drop test to mention a few. This represents an engineering optimization problem. This work describes how the blowmolding of a water cooler bottle with handle is defined as an optimization process with the objective of reducing its weight while maintaining a certain minimum thickness at a certain location. The variable material distribution obtained from the blowmolding optimization will be mapped onto an FEA model making the FEA model very realistic.

In recent years, High-Altitude Wind Energy (HAWE) technologies have emerged to harness the power of wind blowing up to 1000 m above the ground, exploiting the controlled flight of tethered wings. Automatic control of the wings is a key aspect of HAWE generators and it is a complex issue, since the system at hand is open-loop unstable, difficult to model and subject to significant external disturbances. In this paper, a control technique for HAWE generators is proposed, based on a Direct-Inverse Control approach, that allows to compute a controller directly from data, thus avoiding the need to derive a model of the system. The Direct-Inverse controller is designed by using a sparse identification method, and its effectiveness in the considered application is shown through numerical simulation results.

We discuss robust simulation-driven optimization methodologies for the design of various transition structures, including microstrip-to-coplanar and coplanar waveguide-to-substrate integrated waveguide transitions. Our techniques exploit coarsely-discretized electromagnetic models of the transition structures under consideration. By proper management of such models and/or appropriate adjustment of the design requirements, optimized values for the geometry parameters can be obtained at a low computational cost. Design examples are presented. © 2011 IEEE.

Space mapping (SM) has been used in microwave engineering for over a decade and demonstrated as one of the most efficient simulation-driven design techniques available to date. By exploiting a fast and physically-based surrogate model, SM allows rapid optimization of an EM-simulated structure of interest (fine model). Several variations of SM algorithms have been proposed including recently introduced tuning space mapping (TSM) that can be even more efficient. However, TSM requires modification to the optimized structure (i.e., "cutting" and inserting of the tuning ports). Here, for the first time, a comparative study of various SM and TSM algorithms is carried out. Advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are discussed and illustrated through design examples. Recommendations for users of SM/TSM are given.

Adjustment of geometry parameters and performance optimization of dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) is a challenging task that requires electromagnetic (EM) simulations. In particular, DRA design automation is problematic due to high computational cost of accurate, high-fidelity EM simulations;specifically, embedding the EM solver directly into the optimization algorithm (e.g., gradient-based) may make the overall optimization costs inacceptable. In this paper, a computationally efficient simulation-driven DRA design is demonstrated. We present two DRA design cases with antenna geometry adjusted by means of surrogate-based optimization with the underlying low-fidelity model constructed from coarse-discretization EM simulations of the antenna of interest. The specific design approaches utilized here are space mapping and adaptively adjusted design specifications. For both examples, the optimized design is found at the computational cost corresponding only to a few high-fidelity simulations of the DRA. © 2011 IEEE.

Computationally efficient simulation-driven design optimization of ultrawideband (UWB) antennas is presented. We focus on two methodologies, both exploiting coarse-discretization EM simulations, so-called low-fidelity model. The first approach, shape-preserving response prediction (SPRP) allows us to estimate the output of the high-fidelity EM antenna simulation, using the properly selected set of so-called characteristic points of the lowfidelity model response. The SPRP-corrected model is then utilized to yield a prediction of the optimal antenna design. The second technique, accounts for the discrepancy between the low- and highfidelity model responses by appropriate modifications of the design requirements. In either case, the optimization burden is shifted to the low-fidelity model so that the optimized antenna design can be found at low computational cost. Two examples of UWB antenna design are provided. © 2011 IEEE.
