Developing vigorous mathematical models and estimating accurate parameters within feasible computational time are two indispensable parts to build reliable system models for representing biological properties of the system and for producing reliable simulation. For a complex biological system with limited observations, one of the daunting tasks is the large number of unknown parameters in the mathematical modeling whose values directly determine the performance of computational modeling. To tackle this problem, we have developed a data-driven global optimization method, nonlinear RANSAC, based on Random Sample Consensus (a.k.a. RANSAC) method, for parameter estimation of nonlinear system models. Conventional RANSAC method is sound and simple, but it is oriented for linear system models. We not only adopt the strengths of RANSAC, but also extend the method for nonlinear systems with outstanding performance. As a specific application example, we have targeted understanding phagocyte transmigration which is involved in the fibrosis process for biomedical device implantation. With well-defined mathematical nonlinear equations of the system, nonlinear RANSAC is performed for the parameter estimation. Moreover, simulations of the system for propagation prediction over the time are conducted under both normal conditions and knock-out conditions. In order to evaluate the general performance of the method, we also applied the method to signalling pathways where mathematical equations which are representing interaction of proteins are generated using ordinary differential equations as a general format, and public data sets for nonlinear regression evaluation are used to assess its performance.

Current economy is changing really fast because of some different reasons: the globalization of markets, new arising economies like China and Latin America accessing new resources with new pricing policies as well as the world crisis that has driven down the demand in most western *** importance of logistics, due to these aspects, is growing in all industrial fields and obviously also the maritime logistics is strongly affected by these *** this scenario, characterized by big changes, enterprises need to be careful in taking decision and simulation is one of the best ways for supporting companies in analyzing data and finding effective and innovative solutions to increase production capability and to save more *** proposed research is focused on petrochemical logistics. The authors present a new approach based on modeling and simulation (M&S), in order to face maritime logistics problems and to support decisions maker in evaluating different alternatives and strategies with particular attention to fleets management and ports sequencing in ship missions (Bruzzone et al., 2004).The research highlights benefits and advantages of the simulation use as support for decisions making in term of resources management, time and costs optimization and savings *** authors develop conceptual models for petrochemical logistic network, by analyzing the related problems and proposing a simulation based approach to identify innovative solutions and strategies. In particular they propose the simulator MARLON (MARitime LOgistic Network), that is devoted to support decisions makers in ship costs evaluation in different scenarios by taking into account stochastic variables (such as weather condition during the navigation) that have influence on navigation time, load/unload operations time as well as ship and missions costs.

Anomaly diagnostics and fault classification with prognostics is an active research topic, and real-time detection of anomalies and their classification has remained a critical challenge to be overcome. We developed an innovative, model-driven anomaly diagnostic and fault characterization system for electromechanical actuator (EMA) systems to mitigate catastrophic failures. The efficacy of the Model-based Avionic Prognostic Reasoner (MAPR) approach has been proven in real time using test data acquired from a MIL-STD-1553 testbed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are generated as a result of this study to show the tradeoff between sensitivity and specificity. Results of model optimization and fault classification are also presented. This real-time processing will enable enhancements in flight safety and condition-based maintenance (CBM). Once this system is completely mature, flight safety will be improved by allowing the on-board flight computers to read from the MAPR and update their control envelope based on its evaluations of the hardware health, reducing damage propagation, decreasing maintenance time, and increasing operational safety.

To predict the NOx emission level precisely in power station boiler, a data-driven method is presented to solve the problem of the absence of precision model. In this method, the operating data is utilized sufficiently to establish the model based on statistical learning theory. Firstly, the data on field is cleaned to avoid noise and abnormal value. To find the optimal model parameters, genetic algorithm is used for model optimization. So a modeling method is presented to describe the NOx emission level during varying load. The simulation is implemented on a 300MW coal-fired unit with several different working loads, and compared to the way based on neural network, the results show that the model can predict the NOx emission more precisely, which provides the foundation for further operating optimization. © 2011 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

In recent years, High-Altitude Wind Energy (HAWE) technologies have emerged to harness the power of wind blowing up to 1000 m above the ground, exploiting the controlled flight of tethered wings. Automatic control of the wings is a key aspect of HAWE generators and it is a complex issue, since the system at hand is open-loop unstable, difficult to model and subject to significant external disturbances. In this paper, a control technique for HAWE generators is proposed, based on a Direct-Inverse Control approach, that allows to compute a controller directly from data, thus avoiding the need to derive a model of the system. The Direct-Inverse controller is designed by using a sparse identification method, and its effectiveness in the considered application is shown through numerical simulation results.

Test time and test complexity reduction has become a critical challenge in modern RF testing. Prior “alternative” test methods have achieved fast testing at the cost of using supervised learning algorithms that require “training”. In contrast, behavioral model parameter estimation based test methods require the use of accurate models but no “training” is necessary, reducing test deployment costs. In this work, a new test generation approach is proposed that allows behavioral model parameter estimation to be performed from a single optimized OFDM data frame. A genetic multi-tone test stimulus optimization algorithm is developed to maximize the accuracy with which a nonlinear solver can determine RF transceiver model parameters from raw downconverted test response data. The transceiver model proposed is the most comprehensive to date and includes AM-PM distortion and 5th order nonlinearity effects. simulation results show that using the optimized multitone test stimulus, all the model parameters can be computed accurately using a single data acquisition (4X-5X faster than prior parameter estimation techniques and comparable to alternative test times). Data from an experiment performed on a hardware prototype validates the proposed concept.

simulation-driven design of a 2.45 GHz quasi-Yagi antenna is presented that exploits a coarse-discretization antenna model and surrogate-based optimization algorithm. The design objectives include maximum directivity of the principal polarization, input impedance, side lobe level, front-to-back ratio, and direction of maximal radiation. The computation cost of the design process is low because most of the operations are performed on the coarse-discretization model, whereas the high-fidelity simulation is only used for setting up and updating the surrogate model, as well as for design verification.

The precise evaluation of the reliability of logic circuits has a significant importance in highly-defective and future nanotechnologies. It allows efficient comparison of fault-tolerance techniques, and enables designs improvement with respect to their reliability figure. This paper presents a novel, accurate and scalable method for modeling the output probability density functions (PDFs) of logic circuits. Our method combines probability theory with concepts from logic synthesis and testing. The PDFs are modeled using the acquired circuit output probability of failure and PDFs of gates in the last two layers of the output cone. Unlike the existing output PDF modeling techniques, the proposed method is directly applicable to standard CMOS design. simulation results of benchmark circuits demonstrate the accuracy of the method. Several potential applications of the proposed technique include the analysis of averaging (analog) fault-tolerant techniques, fine-grained redundancy insertion, and reliability-driven design optimization.

Scheduling of manufacturing or logistic processes takes high importance as a key factor to improve competitiveness in industrial systems. The state space analysis of Timed Coloured Petri Nets is an accepted simulation-optimization approach which suffers from the state explosion problem which makes difficult to develop approaches that ensure optimality when used as an optimization approach. In this paper it is presented an approach which is a hybrid from depth-first search approaches with a time line approach. The algorithm first finds a feasible path and afterwards it reevaluates the state space in a time driven basis in order to improve its efficiency for finding optimal values of the model when time is used as the cost function.

A reliable algorithm for computationally efficient simulation-driven design optimization of microwave structures is introduced. Our approach exploits manifold mapping (MM), a response correction technique that aligns the coarse model (computationally cheap representation of the structure under consideration) with the accurate but CPU-intensive (fine) model of the optimized device. MM model does not use any extractable parameters which makes it easy to implement. Efficiency and excellent convergence properties of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through the design of several microstrip filters. © 2010 EuMA.
